  • The only species of hummingbird that breeds in eastern North America, the Ruby-throated Hummingbird is found throughout the eastern deciduous and mixed forests. It flies nonstop across the Gulf of Mexico to winter in Central America.
    Cool Facts
    • The Ruby-throated Hummingbird beats its wings 53 times a second.
    • The extremely short legs of the Ruby-throated Hummingbird prevent it from walking or hopping. The best it can do is shuffle along a perch. Nevertheless, it scratches its head and neck by raising its foot up and over its wing.
    • The Ruby-throated Hummingbird does not show a strong preference for any particular color of feeder. Instead, it prefers specific feeder locations.

Archilochus colubris Cool fact: The northward migration of Ruby-throated Hummingbirds in spring appears to coincide with the flowering of certain key plants along their route, including red buckeye ( Aesculus pavia ), clove currant ( Ribes odoratum ), and columbine ( Aquilegia canadensis ). At the northern limits of their range, in Saskatchewan, they have been seen visiting sap wells drilled by sapsuckers before most plants have begun flowering. Listen to a recording of a
    Ruby-throated Hummingbird from the
Library of Natural Sounds: Ruby-throated Hummingbird k] Monarda didyma ) in New York and impatiens in North Dakota. In addition to nectar, small insects are an important part of the Ruby-throated Hummingbird's diet. Small flies, bees, wasps, and spiders are taken at flowers, but they are also gleaned from bark or found beside sapsucker's sap wells. At times, these hummingbirds feed by flycatching in clouds of gnats. Ruby-throated Hummingbirds have one of the longest migration paths of any hummingbird. Early researchers concluded that migrants could not cross the Gulf of Mexico because the energy demands of a 500-mile journey were beyond the capabilities of such a small bird. Later, it was believed that Ruby-throated Hummingbirds put on enough fat before migration to meet the demands of such a flight. It is now believed that at least some of the population makes the flight from Florida to Yucatan. The majority however, migrates around the Gulf through Texas and northern Mexico to winter in Central America as far south as Panama.

Few birds have been as little studied and as misunderstood as Hummingbirds ( Trochilidae) Hummingbirds are strictly a bird of the Western Hemisphere. They are found as far north as Southeastern Alaska and the Maritimes of Canada and as far south as Southern Chile. The majority of the approximately 320 species are found in the tropics. Only 15 species have been known to breed in North America with another 6 being classified as vagrants. Until recently, for instance, it was thought that Ruby-throated hummingbirds were essentially the only species of hummingbird found east of the Mississippi River.

    Coral Trees (Erythrina)
D epending on the botanical authority, there are 112 to possibly 116 different species of coral trees distributed throughout the world. Erythrina
flowers are commonly pollinated by perching birds (passerines) and hummingbirds. Species that are pollinated by perching birds typically have gaping corollas in which the upper banner or standard is ovate or obovate and widely separated from the wing and keel petals which enclosed the stamens. The relatively short bills of these birds can easily reach the liquid nectar at the base of the banner. During feeding, pollen from the exerted stamens is transferred to the bird's head and breast. Compared with hummingbird flowers, the nectar in passerine flowers has a lower sugar content and higher amino acid concentration. Passerine pollination is commonly found in Old World species of Erythrina
in Africa and in about a dozen New World species. Hummingbird flowers are typically elongate and tubular, with the standard or banner elongated and the keel and wing petals reduced. The long, probing bill of the hummingbird is well-adapted for reaching the liquid nectar reward at the base of the petals deep inside the tubular corolla. These flowers have relatively low concentrations of amino acids and a high concentration of sucrose-rich nectar to satisfy the energy requirements and high metabolic rates of hummingbirds. They are typically found in New World species of

    Previous Category Catalog Order Info
Four species of hummingbirds are found in Nebraska, one in the east and three in the west. Ruby-throated hummingbirds migrate through eastern Nebraska in spring and fall, and some nest here, mostly along the Missouri river valley. Typically, ruby-throat migration in Nebraska peaks about May 5-17 and September 2-18, but northward migration may occur from April to June and southward flights from August to early October. Broad-tailed and rufous hummingbirds are seen in the Nebraska panhandle during fall migration from late July to early September with most sightings in early to mid-August. Calliope hummingbirds are seen rarely in the panhandle area. These four hummingbird species spend winter in Mexico and Central America.
    What They Eat
The natural diet of hummers is flower nectar, tree sap, and small insects and spiders that are often captured in or near flowers. This natural diet can be supplemented by hummingbird feeders, which dispense a sugar water solution. Flowers blooming through the season, however, are needed when hummingbirds are present to attract them and to provide the natural foods required for a complete diet.

The following information, including reader comments, is intended to give you a "feel" for the numbers of hummingbirds coming to your feeders. You may find there are often many more hummingbirds present at your feeders than might be thought. Some caveats to keep in mind are: *Not all hummingbirds are Black-chinned Hummingbirds.* *Not all hummingbird individuals or species are the same size which may impact sugar solution intake.* *Not all hummingbird species or individuals are known to drink the same amount of sugar solution*. *The length of the feeding day differs depending upon latitude and longitude.* *Feeding rates and consumption may vary depending upon temperature and other weather related factors.* *Migrating hummingbirds may require more food than non-migrating hummingbirds.* Ruth Russell, Tucson Audubon Society, passes this information on from her husband Steve who has conducted hummingbird research in Southeast Arizona for years.

HUMMINGBIRD CELEBRATION 2003 HC Activities Hummingbird Banding Results KRV Hummer Finding Guide ... VISITORS This page discusses feeder cleaning, feeder selection (and a web site for feeder reviews), a sugar solution recipe for feeding hummers, and reader comments. Bottom Line : Keep your feeders CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN!!!!! Putting out a feeders to attract hummingbirds, who need to feed frequently, especially during migration, is a very popular activity. However, using the wrong kinds of sugar solutions or leaving moldy feeders out can kill hummingbirds and their babies. Cleaning Feeders : Change the sugar solution often. Clean and put only enough fresh sugar solution in your feeders to last one to two days in warm weather, or sooner if it looks cloudy or develops mold. Keeping feeders in the shade slows down fermentation and mold growth. But, feeders placed in the sun are more easily seen and seem to attract more individual hummingbirds. Use only vinegar and water to clean feeders. Soap or bleach traces left in feeders, even after thorough rinsing, can harm hummers. A specially designed sponge or brush can help. If you use bleach as a last resort, follow-up by cleaning the bleach out with a vinegar and water solution.
