Hummingbirds and Butterflies
Updated 8/22/95 Backyards and other small areas may have a limited value when managing for larger species like deer, but they are extremely valuable for many other species. With planning and a little work, these areas can easily be managed to benefit nectar-seekers such as hummingbirds and butterflies. By promoting plant species and habitat components that are beneficial to hummingbirds and butterflies, you can insure their colorful presence. This publication highlights key steps to protect and provide the important habitat areas needed by hummingbirds and butterflies.
Figure 1. A hummingbird. Getting Started It is important to have a soil test done on potential garden sites before beginning to plant. Soil tests are free through the NC Department of Agriculture Soil Testing Lab. Soil test information and interpretive material is available from your Cooperative Extension Service Center. Extension agents can recommend soil amendments and plants adapted to your area. After a site is chosen, sketch out a garden plan. The plan should show the arrangement of flower groups, the location of water sources, basking areas, and if needed, artificial feeder sites. Hummingbirds and butterflies are attracted to sunny areas. Improve shaded garden sites by opening the canopy.

Nature's little jewels. Hummingbirds are the smallest of North American birds, all with long slender bills adapted for reaching deep into tubular flowers Wingbeat is so rapid it produces a humming sound. All species feed while hovering and can also fly backward. Throat feathes look black when light does not reflect the brilliant iridescent colors. Young birds resemble females; some are difficult to identify. All are fearless and pugnacious, Males have a "pendulum" courting flight with distinctive patterms for some species Migrate by day, flying low. Eggs, 2, are small, white. Few have a song however, most all have a rapid squeaky chipping [or a clicking] sound.

Plants for Hummingbirds in Houston
by Donald Ray Burger
Attorney at Law
Hummingbirds prefer red and orange flowers, shaped like trumpets. The following is a list of easy-to-grow plants suitable for the Houston area. I must personally observe a hummingbird eating from the plant before it can make this list. Abelia (Abelia grandiflora). Evergreen shrub in Houston. Long shoots give the plant an airy, arching look. Our canes are up to five feet. White flowers in summer and fall. Drought tolerant. First noticed hummer eating from blooms on September 12, 1998. Allamanda (Allalmanda cathartica). Perennial vine. Tropical. Prefers high humidity and temperatures above 60 degrees. Beautiful yellow flower. Even though the blooms are not red, hummers love them. Butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa). Perennial. Full sun. Mine took the freeze of '95 without ill effect. Growth in my garden to 3 to 4 feet. Lanky. Blooms early summer. I have observed hummers feeding on the blooms of this plant. Cape honeysuckle (Tecomaria capensis).

Where did they get their name? The New England Colonists were the first to call them hummingbirds after hearing the hum from the wings of these little birds.
http://www.orchidlady.com/personal/humming.html
I have always had an overwhelming fascination for hummingbirds. I have several feeders that I put out every year so I can watch them up close. I have a very large collection of hummingbird paraphernalia: hummer tea sets, hummers made of wood, hummers made of crystal, a hummer coffee pot, clock, pictures, jewelry, clothing, and even a border of hummers in my kitchen. The love I have for these wonderful little birds is what has inspired me to design my new award. SPARKLE

The Down Under Version of a Hummer TELL ME ABOUT HUMMERS Where are humming birds found? They are found as far north as Alaska and as far south as Tierra del Fiego. Over half of the species are found in Ecuador and Brazil. They inhabit North and South America and also groups of islands farther away. 19 species are found in West Indies and the Bahamas, 2 species are in Juan Fermadez islands. They can also be found near the frozen Andean peaks of Chimborazo, Sangay and Cotopaxi. 163 species are found near the equator, 54 in Costa Rica, 51 in Mexico. There are 21 species that can be found in North America (only 4 in Canada) but only 16 breed there. How many are in the family?

An introduction to biology, classification and ecology of Trochiliformes (hummingbirds). hummingbirds. Most hummingbirds have straight bills of various lengths.
http://www.earthlife.net/birds/trochiliformes.html
Hummingbirds
Hummingbirds are small colourful birds, in areas where they occur they are seen in peoples gardens. Their hovering, or sudden darting flight is very distinctive allowing most people to recognise them immediately. The smallest species is the Bee Hummingbird ( Mellisuga helenae ) which is also the smallest bird in the world. The largest species is the Giant Hummingbird ( Patagonia gigas ) which is 20 cm (8 in) in length and weights about 20g, 2/3 of an ounce. Not really that big you might think, but quite large for a hummingbird with their high energy demands Hummingbirds are all very similar structurally they are related to swifts and have similarly short legs and reduced bones in their wings. They do not walk and use their legs and feet only for perching. They are therefore excellent flyers capable of flying sideways, backwards and of hovering with high precision. Their wing beat rate varies from 8-10 beats per second in the Giant Hummingbirds through 20-25 beats per second in the mid-sized species to 70 beats per second in the smaller species. The name Hummingbird comes from the sound made by the wings in flight. Hummingbirds have a body temperature of around 105 degrees F, higher than most birds. To maintain this temperature throughout the night would require very large reserves of energy. The Hummingbirds avoid this problem by letting their body temperature drop during the night. Below a certain temperature hummingbirds can enter a state of torpor. Migratory species and those with more northerly, southerly or mountain distributions tend to fall into torpor more fully during the night. Whether or not a particular bird enters torpor overnight depends not only on the air temperature, but also on how much the bird was able to find to eat around dusk.
