Introduction
Thank you very much for inviting me to speak to you this morning about the history and philosophy of Humanism and its role in Unitarian Universalism. I am very happy to be here.
Definition of Humanism
What is Humanism? For many reasons, this is not an easy question to answer, but I will attempt to answer it in a number of steps. The word "humanism" has a number of distinct meanings, all legitimate, so let's briefly discuss them all and narrow in on my type of humanism. First, humanism means the study of the humanitiesliterature, history, philosophy, and so forth. Professors and students of history, philosophy, and literature are humanists, and are perfectly legitimately so described. A second definition of humanism is the European Renaissance revival of interest and critical inquiry in Western classical literature, which as you know, was pervasively secular and oriented to human, rather than theological, concerns, unlike that other great literary source of Western thought, the Bible. Individual scholars of such classical letters, such as Thomas More of England and Erasmus of Holland, were orthodox believers in an age of encompassing Christianity, but they are widely and correctly described as humanists, because they translated and commented upon the great literature of Aristotle, Plato, and other ancient classical, pagan writers.

humanism as both a program and a philosophy. Textbooks will tell you that the humanists of the Renaissance rediscovered the Latin and Greek classics (hence the "rebirth" or "renaissance" of the classical world), that humanist philosophy stressed the dignity of humanity, and that humanists shifted intellectual emphasis off of theology and logic to specifically human studies. In pursuing this program, the argument goes, the humanists literally created the European Renaissance and paved the way for the modern, secular world.
studia humanitatis . The studia humanitatis originated in the mddle ages and were all those educational disciplines outside of theology and natural science. Humanism was not opposed to logic, as is commonly held, but opposed to the particular brand of logic known as Scholasticism. In point of fact, the humanists actively revised the science of logic. Humanism, then, really begins during the middle ages in Europe; while the humanist scholars of the Renaissance made great strides and discoveries in this field, humanistic studies were really a product of middle ages. Not only that, the "rediscovery" of the classical world which was the hallmark of Renaissance humanism in reality began much earlier in the middle ages; as Europeans began to see themselves as a single ethnic group with a common origin in the middle ages, the recovery of classical literature, both Latin and Greek, became a concern for all the medieval centers of learning.
studia humanitatis consisted of more or less five disciplines drawn from the classical educational curriculum, called the

Humanism and the Renaissance The true spirit of Humanism and the Renaissance is that of Neo-Platonism, which is present to a greater or lesser degree in the entire period. In this spirit, Humanism divinizes man, and the Renaissance divinizes nature, in which it seeks the explanation of reality; the state is considered as being above all morality, and the Protestant Reform finds justification for the individual interpretation of the Sacred Scriptures.

Philosophy, logic, theology are areas which have become typecast with India. To a person from outside India, this culture has nothing to offer other than the knowledge about these areas. As far as material culture goes, India had nothing to contribute, is the popular impression among people from the rest of our globe today as also among most Indians. The foregoing chapters have thrown light on the advances made by this country in the material sciences and the transmission of these advances abroad. This image of Buddha

Neo-Humanist Philosophy
A Song to Greet the Dawn
"Let us move together.
Let us sing together.
Let us come to know our minds together.
Let us share, like sages of the past,
That all individuals together may enjoy the Universe." - from the ancient Rig Veda -
Neo-Humanist Philosophy Neo Humanism is an ecological, holistic, comprehensive philosophy. Drawing upon ancient teachings on the levels of consciousness, a neo-humanistic approach to education seeks to develop the more subtle capacities of the human mind. Neo-Humanism is the spirit of benevolence. To teach love one must embody it. To embody love one must see all as divine. To see all as divine one must practice methods of contemplation and inner reflection. Only then will one embody the true spirit of universal outlook in their thoughts and actions.
Cultivating a Universal Outlook
The philosophy of Neo-Humanist education is based on extending the inherent love of human beings to all people, animals, plant life and the inanimate world. This outlook is ideally suited to the needs and changing vision of today's society with its shift from a mechanistic worldview to one based on holistic and collective harmony.

http://www.progressivehumanism.com/inevitab.html
Is Progress Inevitable? For most of my life I have been trying to relate my personal experiences to ideas I have absorbed from othersboth during my formal education, and later on. It was like assembling a whole series of massively complicated jigsaw puzzles, and then taking the puzzles themselves and fitting them together into new and larger sets of patterns. Pattern recognition, the ability to perceive relationships, the quest for the missing piece or the missing principle, and the thrill when I found itthat has been the name of the great game of my life. By the time I retired, nearly ten years ago, I had assembled enough of the pieces so that I was ready to move to the next stage, writing essays. The first essays were the easiest, and they came rapidly, sometimes two or three a day. As the subject matter got more complex, their rate of production diminished, and now months sometimes go by with nothing to show. By now I am finally getting to the point where I can rationally perceive at least the outlines of what I have subconsciously been seeking all along. And that is nothing less than a definition of what a modern, educated, informed, and rational person can have faith in. I have pulled enough pieces together into patterns that fit to be certain that the faith of our fathers (and mothers) needs to be consigned to an honorable pasture. As I put it in one essay, it is time "to give God the boot". Either God invented humankind, as we have been taught for ages, or humans invented God, (or the gods, depending on which particular group of humans you are talking about.)

What is Humanism?

Executive Director, American Humanist Association What is humanism? The sort of answer you will get to that question depends on what sort of humanist you ask! The word "humanism" has a number of meanings, and because authors and speakers often don't clarify which meaning they intend, those trying to explain humanism can easily become a source of confusion. Fortunately, each meaning of the word constitutes a different type of humanism the different types being easily separated and defined by the use of appropriate adjectives. So, let me summarize the different varieties of humanism in this way. Literary Humanism is a devotion to the humanities or literary culture. Renaissance Humanism is the spirit of learning that developed at the end of the middle ages with the revival of classical letters and a renewed confidence in the ability of human beings to determine for themselves truth and falsehood. Cultural Humanism is the rational and empirical tradition that originated largely in ancient Greece and Rome, evolved throughout European history, and now constitutes a basic part of the Western approach to science, political theory, ethics, and law.

Cultural Humanism : A concept that knowledge can be obtained through rational thought and experimentation. It has its roots in ancient Greece and Rome. It developed into the scientific method and is the major underpinning of all sciences today. 'The need for critical thinking skills and a humanistic outlook in our world is great. This is no less true in the Black community than in others. Many African Americans have been engulfed by religious irrationality, conned by self-serving "faith healers", and swayed by dogmatic revisionist historians. Many others, however, have escaped the oppression of such delusions, and live happy and upstanding lives free of superstition. African Americans for Humanism (AAH) exists to bring these secular humanists together, to provide a forum for communication, and to facilitate coordinated action. In an irrational world, those who stand for reason must stand together'. Definition of Theism : Theism may be defined as belief in a god or gods. Some religions have many gods; some have only one. Some religions are theistic; others are not. Theism is the opposite of atheism, which is belief that there is no god. Biblical theism is belief in the Judeo-Christian God, i.e., the God presented in the Bible. Biblical theism encompasses many subtopics. A study of the God of the Bible will necessarily focus attention on the Godhead, composed of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It relates to the nature and attributes of God, the pre-existence and deity of Christ, the person and operation of the Holy Spirit, and a host of other subcategories. Secular Humanism is a term which has come into use in the last thirty years to describe a world view with the following elements and principles:
    * A conviction that dogmas, ideologies and traditions, whether religious, political or social, must be weighed and tested by each individual and not simply accepted on faith.
    * Commitment to the use of critical reason, factual evidence, and scientific methods of inquiry, rather than faith and mysticism, in seeking solutions to human problems and answers to important human questions.
    * A primary concern with fulfillment, growth, and creativity for both the individual and humankind in general.
    * A constant search for objective truth, with the understanding that new knowledge and experience constantly alter our imperfect perception of it.
    * A concern for this life and a commitment to making it meaningful through better understanding of ourselves, our history, our intellectual and artistic achievements, and the outlooks of those who differ from us.

    FUNDAMENTALS OF MONISTIC HUMANISM

Please help Anil Chawla in writing this book
Humanism has influenced modern civilization more than any other philosophy has. But, humanism is probably as old as mankind. Its foundations can be found in the ideas of classical Greek philosophers such as the Stoics and Epicurians as well as in Chinese Confucianism and in Indian philosophy. These philosophical views looked to human beings rather than gods to solve human problems. The proposed book Fundamentals of Monistic Humanism is an attempt to develop a holistic humanist philosophy that can guide individual, family, society, country and the world to lead a life in harmony with the nature and the universe. It starts from the fundamentals of humanism and takes help from ancient Indian philosophy. It does not reject any civilization or culture or religion. Nor does it accept any book or authority as the Ultimate Truth. The writing of this book is intended to be a co-operative effort involving all those who agree with the above basic vision.

Wilson In a superb synthesis of the biological and social sciences, Wilson attempts to explain the core principles of our shared humanity as the accumulated result of evolutionary processes over millions of years. His account is remarkable in that it includes comparisons and examples from a diverse range of life-forms, human cultures, and branches of human knowledge. Wilson's empathy with his subject is compelling; his fundamental understanding of socio-biological principles, and sometimes deeply intuitive application of them to other fields is always thought-provoking if not entirely convincing.
