This is an introductory survey course on international human rights law and procedures which will include detailed consideration of global, regional, and national mechanisms for the protection of human rights. There are two required texts:
  • Richard B. Lillich and Hurst Hannum, International Human Rights: Problems of Law, Policy, and Practice Documentary Supplement ["Supplement"]
  • Hurst Hannum, ed., Guide to International Human Rights Practice , (Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press, 2d ed. 1992) ["Guide"]
Other required readings will be photocopied and available at Gnomen Copy for purchase for your personal use. They also will be placed on reserve in the library. Regular reading of a major international newspaper (e.g., New York Times, Washington Post, Guardian, Times of London, or Le Monde) is strongly recommended. The course requirements consist of one research memorandum on an international human rights law topic (10-15 pages) and a three hour self-scheduled final exam that may be taken at any time during the final exam period. Both will be blind-graded (students will be identified by number, not by name); each will count towards 40% of the final grade. The remaining 20% of the grade will be based on class participation and attendance.

Archived entries in Human Rights Jiang Lijun is PRC's newest internet dissident We've seen before how these people aren't really "dissidents," for they are mostly just common people who write something on the internet that the PRC deems to be dangerous. Dissident, in my understanding, is someone who actually does something of a violent nature against the country, or at least, calls for the overthrow of it through violent means. So although Jiang Lijun may not fit that definition of dissident in that sense, he nonetheless has been the most outspoken to date (quoted in full): A Chinese pro-democracy activist was sentenced to four years in prison yesterday for posting articles on the internet calling for the overthrow of the Communist party, a human rights group said. Jiang Lijun, 38, was arrested last November on charges of subversion of state power. He was found guilty in January and sentenced yesterday at Beijing's No 2 intermediate people's court, according to the Hong Kong-based Information Centre for Human Rights and Democracy. He was one of five activists accused of subversive activities for signing an open letter calling for political reform which was posted on the internet before the Communist party's congress two years ago. The other four, He Depu, Zhao Changqing, Ouyang Yi and Dai Xuezhong have all reportedly been sentenced on subversion charges.

Lucas Benítez, of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, accepts the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award.
By: www.ciw-online.org
Mrs. Kennedy, Senator Kennedy, and Mrs. Kerry Kennedy, I bring you thanks from all the members of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers for this wonderful day.
But before I begin, I feel that I must tell you that today my compañeros and I feel a little disoriented, as if we were lost in a sort of dream world where you can no longer know just what is real.
This award today is the proof, testimony to Robert Kennedy's vision, his belief that we as workers and poor people also are part of this democracy, that our voices must be a part of this country's great chorus and our interests taken into account, because without justice, true peace, lasting peace, is not possible.
Behind the shiny, happy images promoted by the fast-food industry with its never-ending commercials on TV, fueled by over $3 billion in marketing annually, and behind the supermarket advertising that celebrates the abundance of our harvest each Thanksgiving, there is another reality.

ACCESS RIGHTS OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES AND THEIR SERVICE ANIMALS INTRODUCTION People with disabilities use and have a right to use the same facilities and services used by those without current disabilities; use of a service animal almost never limits that right.
This pamphlet is intended to provide a communal, accurate source of information for (1) people who use or train service animals, (2) those managing or employed by places of public accommodation (including both private and governmental entities), and (3) police officers and others responsible for enforcing the rights of people with disabilities who are using service animals and of those people who train such animals. This brochure is not offered as legal advice and should not be relied upon for particular matters without the independent advice of counsel qualified in these issues. For counsel you can contact the Legal Referral Service of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York and the New York County Lawyers' Association or your local bar association. MESSAGE TO MANAGERS AND EMPLOYEES OF PUBLIC
ACCOMMODATIONS It is unlawful to discriminate against a person who is enjoying or seeking to enjoy a place of public accommodation (including a public entity) solely because that person has a disability and is accompanied by a guide dog, hearing dog, or other service animal. Comment: When is Anti-Semitism a Human Rights Violation?
by David A. Levy
International law recognizes that freedom of religious belief is a fundamental human right. Contemporary human rights law has as its basis the reaction of the world community to the horrors of the Holocaust. Religious freedoms are guaranteed by the Charter of the United Nations, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant of Civil and Political Rights, the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, and most prominently, the Declaration on the Elimination of All Forms of Intolerance and Discrimination Based on Religion or Belief, inter alia . Indeed, the Declaration cogently states:
"Discrimination between human beings on the grounds of religion or belief constitutes an affront to human dignity and a disavowal of the principles of the Charter of the United Nations, and shall be condemned as a violation of the human rights and fundamental freedoms proclaimed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and enunciated in detail in the International Covenants on Human Rights, and as an obstacle to friendly and peaceful relations between nations."
The Charter, which has been recognized as the supreme expression of international law

Latest update: December 2001 Introduction The European Union respects and promotes the universal principles as laid down in the Universal Declaration on Human Rights and its complementary International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights . The Union’s activities are also based on the main international and regional instruments for the protection of human rights, including the European Convention on Human Rights . These instruments enshrine common values regarding fundamental freedoms and democratic principles, which are universal, indivisible and interdependent. Respect for these values is a condition for efficient development in any society. Other important sources with regard to defining the priorities of the EU are the declaration and the programme of action of the World Conference on Human Rights (Vienna, 1993), the declarations of the International Conference on Population and Development (Cairo, 1994), of the World Summit for Social Development (Copenhagen, 1995) and of the Fourth World Conference on Women (Beijing 1995).

From the highest to the lowest, self exists to be abdicated and, by that abdication, becomes the more truly self, to be thereupon yet the more abdicated, and so forever. This is not a heavenly law which we can escape by remaining earthly, nor an earthly law which we can escape by being saved. What is outside the system of self-giving is not earth, nor nature, nor "ordinary lives", but simply and solely hell. C. S. Lewis
