The Human Body: An Online Tour
The human body is the most fascinating and fantastic machine in existence. No one understands all of its many mysteries; and no single source can do justice to its many parts. This week, Education World tours the Web to find the best "human body" sites. You won't believe what we discovered! Included: Sites for all ages. Activities too! Do your students know that
  • more than half the bones in the human body are in the hands and feet?
  • the highest recorded "sneeze speed" is 165 km (102 miles) per hour?

Rationale

This interdisciplinary unit is to teach the students about the Human body and nutrition. The students will be learning about why they need to eat good food. The students will understand the importance of nutrition through a demonstration of foods they like, the calories, and how their body uses it. The lesson will incorporate math, writing, and art into the discussion of the Human body and food. These different subject areas will give the students a better understanding to why they need to eat healthy food. All in all, the students will get to see for themselves how the food that they enjoy helps or does not help their body. Objectives Concept Objectives - The students will:
1. identify the foods they most enjoy.
2. count calories.
3. learn what is good calories and bad.
4. gain knowledge on how the food effects their bodies. Process Objectives - The students will:
1. use their prior knowledge with healthy foods.
2. identify good and bad calories.

Lesson on How to Make a Model of the Human Respiratory System Teacher: Debbie Kilburn Subject: Science Date: November 22, 1997 I. Content: The respiratory system is one of many working systems in the human body and is composed of various parts and organs, each with its own function. II. Instructional Objective: Given an unlabeled diagram of the respiratory system, the student will: 1. Label parts of the human respiratory system to include the trachea, bronchi, lungs, thoracic cavity, and diaphragm. 2. Explain the function of the diaphragm in respiration in a paragraph of no less than 4 complete sentences to include the terms "expand", "contract", "inhale", and "exhale" as they relate to the diaphragm and the lungs during respiration. III . Prerequisite: Students should be able to explain that the human body contains many "systems" that carry out unique functions necessary to sustain life, that the respiratory system is one of them, and that its function is that of breathing. IV. Instructional Procedure:

6th Grade Lesson Plan for PowerPoint Presentation
Rene Lyons, Lincoln School Objectives:
  • Students will do research and become aware of the various systems at work in the human body. Students will learn some of the basic skills in putting together a PowerPoint presentation. Students will learn to use the scanner and Adobe Photo Deluxe software.
Procedure: First, I had the students paired up and assigned them to one of the systems of the human body: Nervous Respiratory Excretory Immune Reproductive Circulatory Digestive Endocrine Exocrine Skeletal Muscular I did send notes home with students making the parents aware in case of any concerns. The students were told to research and write a one page report. I asked them to define the system, describe the purpose(s) and all the parts of the system. That was the minimal amount required. They were to make a title slide and then about 3 more slides depicting the information required. The students were to find appropriate pictures or visuals that could be scanned to portray that information. Observations: The classroom had one scanner. That slowed the process. I needed to have students scanning throughout the day.

http://insected.arizona.edu/lesson_01/lplan.htm
Lesson Plan: Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes
Length of sessions:
  • Three 20 minute sessions
  • Three 30 minute sessions
Introduction Activity (30 minute session)
Play the game "Simon Says" using the directions to touch: head, shoulders, chest, neck, elbow, etc. (body parts). Keep the game at a lively pace and observe students to see if they touch correct body parts. Following the game, ask one student to volunteer to lie down on a large piece of butcher paper or craft paper. Teacher traces his/her outline. Ask the students to add eyes, other features and to name the body parts they know. Label the drawing as the children give responses.
Activity 1 (30 minute session)
Read and discuss A Very Quiet Cricket
Activity 2 (30 minute session)
Show the large line drawing of the cricket to the students. Ask the students to recall their observations of the cricket and help to label the drawing. As children mention body parts, label them both with their words and the anatomically correct name( Cricket Diagram (labelled) ). Explain that: "This is the term entomologists use. Entomologists are scientists who study insects." For example: chest and thorax, stomach and abdomen, eyes and compound eyes. If the students suggest the word "antennae," label it. If not, this would be a good time to explain the function of the antennae. Continue to label the cricket using the guide provided with the lesson. Give the crickets to the students for a second observation period. If some of the crickets have died, they can be put in an "Observa-scope," or "Bugbox" for closer observation. (Dead crickets may not be pleasant to handle or look at, use discretion). The students may want to handle the dead crickets to observe them more closely. Provide copies of the cricket drawings to be taken home and shared with the parents.

79. 1999 Teachers Guide: Medicine, Healing, And The Body: Lesson Plan: Text
In the case of the ancient Egyptians, the practice of embalming the dead gave people an unusually clear look at the details of the human body.
http://nationalhistoryday.org/03_educators/teach99/lesson5/lesson5_intro.htm
Medical Theories and Practices of Ancient Cultures
Introduction
The following excerpts from famous medical texts of three ancient culturesIndia, China and Greeceoffer a glimpse of how ancient physicians and other healers understood human health, the process of disease, medical treatment and human anatomy. In ancient cultures, religion, philosophy and sometimes magic figured heavily into the healers' understanding of health, disease and healing. As scholars of medicine have pointed out: "All healing systems began in religion and philosophy and espoused mystical union with God or nature....In all cultures, the original healers were shamans or priests....In ancient Greece, the sick crowded the temple and the priests diagnosed them, often through the interpretation of dreams after hallucinogenic drugs." The use of spells, incantations and ritual were commonplace in medical practice all over the world until well into the 20th century. Science as we know it today is based on observation of the physical world and can in theory be completely unconnected to religious commitments; philosophy does not need to be invoked to explain scientific principles. In the ancient world of China, India and Europe, such was not the case. Yet ancient cultures also based their approaches to healing on careful observation of the patient (and, as you will see, his or her surroundings). And these cultures evolved approaches to medicine based on experiences passed down through generations and sometimes shared across cultures. For example, ancient Greek medicine was strongly influenced by the medical knowledge of the ancient Egyptians.

Medical Theories and Practices of Ancient Cultures - Part II
Medicine in Ancient China
The classic text excerpted here, The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Medicine or Nei Ching , probably dates between 200 and 600 bc. Ch'i Po, the prime minister of Huang Ti (the "Yellow Emperor"), has been likened to the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates. According to medical scholar Donald Pachuta, "Both incorporated religion and philosophy, turned to nature, and created systems that lasted millennia. Both emphasized that perception is the fundamental tool of the physician. Both spoke of the internal and external causative factors of disease. They agreed that the internal factor, the spirit, is overwhelmingly important in both patient and practitioner." Chinese medicine developed significant anatomical knowledge far in advance of Europeans. In the second century bc the Chinese knew about the circadian rhythms of the human body and practiced the isolation of human hormones for medical purposes. They knew about the circulation of the blood through the body some 1800 years before scientists discovered it in Europe. Their knowledge was based in part on their careful analysis of a variety of patient symptoms. According to China scholar Robert Temple, "The Chinese traditionally identified twenty-eight different types of pulse, which they recognized as emanating from the pumping heart." They also "carried out investigations in which they removed the blood vessels from corpses, stretched them to their full length, and made measurements of the total distance traveled by the blood in one circuit."
