Human Body Symmetry General biology textbooks list symmetry as a key concept used by scientists to differentiate various groups of animals. Authors of these texts usually state that all animals except sponges have their body parts arranged along an axis. This arrangement may be one of radial symmetry, wherein parts are arranged around a central axis, or bilateral symmetry, wherein an animal's right half is a mirror image of its left half. Humans are placed in the group of bilaterally symmetrical animals (Phylum Chordata). But, how bilaterally symmetrical are we? Is our left half a true mirror image of our right half? A quick tour of one's internal anatomy reveals a lack of complete bilateral symmetry because we only have one heart and it is located in the left half of our thoracic cavity. Even the heart itself, with its four chambers, has a left ventricle that is substantially larger than the right ventricle. What do you think about our external anatomy? Is our left side a mirror image of our right side? Can you design an experiment to answer this question? Can you think of other symmetry questions that could be addressed from an examination of external human anatomy? Check some of the links below to learn how we have been investigating this problem and review some of the data we have collected. In fact, why don't you start measuring your body and let me [Buzz Hoagland

The exchange of gases (O from the blood into the alveoli. Diffusion requires a concentration gradient. So, the concentration (or pressure) of O in the alveoli must be kept at a lower lever than in the blood. We do this, of course, by breathing - continuously bringing fresh air (with lots of O Breathing is an active process - requiring the contraction of skeletal muscles. The primary muscles of respiration The external intercostals plus the diaphragm contract to bring about inspiration:
  • Contraction of external intercostal muscles Contraction of diaphragm > diaphragm moves downward > increases vertical dimension of thoracic cavity > lowers air pressure in lungs > air moves into lungs:

  • Surfactant decreases surface tension which:
increases pulmonary compliance (reducing the effort needed to expand the lungs) reduces tendency for alveoli to collapse

    • External respiration:
        exchange of O
Internal respiration - intracellular use of O to make ATP occurs by simple diffusion along partial pressure gradients

Food and Digestion
Food is what is required by humans to grow and survive, and provide a 'fuel' for the energy needed in our biological reactions As opposed to plants that can acquire their food from the soil and sunlight, animals are required to eat foodstuffs in order to create the energy they need to survive. These foods contain many compounds and elements that are useful to our body and our daily functions. This food is entered into the body via the mouth, where enzymes such as lysozyme begin to breakdown the food while it is chewed. When this food is broken down into smaller pieces it can then be swallowed, where it travels down the oesophagus towards the stomach. The stomach then continues to break down the foodstuff. The stomach at this point is filled with a type of acid that further breaks down the food, until it is in a semi-liquid state. Note that the stomach only acts as a storage point at this stage, until the food slowly passes into the duodenum, which is part of the small intestine. It is here where the food is completely broken down, in the following manner:
  • Proteins are broken down into amino acids Fats into fatty acids Complex sugars into simple sugars
From here, you can see that a complex product (the food you eat) is stripped bare, until the substances that they are broken down to can be used by the body in some way. By breaking down these foodstuffs to their most basic nature, the body can then rebuild these substances as and when required, for example, to create enzymes.

Why is the human body 98.6 F?
Author: sweet potata Text: Why is the temperature of the human body 98.6 F? Response #: 1 of 1 Author: Dr. Pam Text: This is like asking-why is there life. I cannot answer "why" but I can tell you that in many organisms - BUT NOT ALL - 98.6 F (37 C) is the temperature at which most reactions occur most efficiently. Our enzymes have adapted to that temperature. When a mammal hibernates, their body temperature actually falls and they are much less active. Not only do they appear to be asleep, but they breathe less often and their heart rate is greatly reduced. Some organisms have adapted to other temperatures (mostly the temperature of their surroundings. When their enzymes are isolated and studied in the lab they are found to function most efficiently at the higher (for "thermophiles") or lower (for "psychrophiles") temperatures their cells normally live in.

SUGGESTED MATERIAL (available at KB Books) Study Guide to accompany The Human Body , by Bauman Biology 341 Lecture Note Supplement, by S. Garver COURSE OBJECTIVE The Human Body (Bio. 341) is an upper division, non-majors course designed to meet the G.E. Life Science requirement. It is NOT open to nursing or P.E. majors and students must be in their Junior or Senior year. The class meets for 1 hour 15 minutes two times a week (11:00-12:15 T/Th). This course is designed to guide you through an introductory-level survey of the human body and human disease. The objectives include increasing your awareness of the structure and function of your body and, consequently, improving your understanding of the human experience in health and disease. It is my hope that you will leave the course with an enlightened ability to make more intelligent decisions about maintaining your own health and an improved understanding of current advancements in medical science. COURSE REQUIREMENTS EXAMS There will be four (4) Unit exams and one (1) comprehensive final. Each exam (including the final) is weighted equally at 100 points.
