13. The Skeletal System
The human skeleton is divided into two distinct parts The axial skeleton consistsof bones that form the axis of the body and support and protect the organs
http://www.mnsu.edu/emuseum/biology/humananatomy/skeletal/skeletalsystem.html
The Skeletal System The Skeletal System serves many important functions; it provides the shape and form for our bodies in addition to supporting, protecting, allowing bodily movement, producing blood for the body, and storing minerals. Functions Its 206 bones form a rigid framework to which the softer tissues and organs of the body are attached. Vital organs are protected by the skeletal system. The brain is protected by the surrounding skull as the heart and lungs are encased by the sternum and rib cage. Bodily movement is carried out by the interaction of the muscular and skeletal systems. For this reason, they are often grouped together as the musculo-skeletal system. Muscles are connected to bones by tendons . Bones are connected to each other by ligaments . Where bones meet one another is typically called a joint . Muscles which cause movement of a joint are connected to two different bones and contract to pull them together. An example would be the contraction of the biceps and a relaxation of the triceps. This produces a bend at the elbow. The contraction of the triceps and relaxation of the biceps produces the effect of straightening the arm. Blood cells are produced by the marrow located in some bones. An average of 2.6 million red blood cells are produced each second by the bone marrow to replace those worn out and destroyed by the liver.

What is psychology?
  • Psychology: the science of the mind How do psychologists study the mind? Human behaviour: the raw data of psychology Psychology and other disciplines Branches of psychology
Psychology: the science of the mind Psychology is the science of the mind. The human mind is the most complex machine on Earth. It is the source of all thought and behaviour. How do psychologists study the mind? But how can we study something as complex and mysterious as the mind? Even if we were to split open the skull of a willing volunteer and have a look inside, we would only see the gloopy grey matter of the brain. We cannot see someone thinking. Nor can we observe their emotions, or memories, or perceptions and dreams. So how do psychologists go about studying the mind? In fact, psychologists adopt a similar approach to scientists in other fields. Nuclear physicists interested in the structure of atoms cannot observe protons, electrons and neutrons directly. Instead, they predict how these elements should behave and devise experiments to confirm or refute their expectations.

The Visible Human Project
A 39-year-old convicted murderer willed his body to science. After his execution, his body was frozen, cut into one-millimeter-thick slices, and photographed. The data were made available in 1994 on the Internet by the National Library of Medicine, data that has been used in a multitude of medical applications. To view two- and three-dimensional representations of the human body based on these data, visit any of these sites:
  • Center for Human Simulation : The University of Colorado developed three-dimensional reconstructions and surgical simulations from the Visible Human dataset. They have cross-sections from the visible female, as well as the visible male.
  • A Guided Tour of the Visible Human : The MAD Scientist Network at Washington University in St. Louis describes the Project: how the sections were made, how two-dimensional slices can create three-dimensional views, and what the three planes of the human body are. It also has a section where it identifies a body part that you click on, and lets you search for an image of a specific body part.
  • Visible Human Cross-Sections : The muscles, bones, and features of each slice are labeled and accompanied by corresponding MRI and CT images from Loyola University in Chicago.

20. Science Line - Biology & Medicine - Does The Human Body Contain 60 Billion Or 50
must be present in the organs of different people. human body QuestionList. biology Medicine Subject List. Question No b00763d.
http://www.sciencenet.org.uk/database/bio/humans/humanbody/b00763d.html
Does the human body contain 60 billion or 50,000 million cells? These numbers are nearly the same, since acceptance of the American billion (1,000,000,000) as the standard. Certainly within the limits of accuracy of this sort of estimate, there is little to choose between the two. Although some cells like neurons, and to a large extent striated muscle, do not divide in the normal human adult, many others e.g. blood cells, can and do divide in the body in response to different challenges, and therefore there is not a static cell count within any one person. As each person starts life as a single cell, which divides to make many more, the number of cells depends on the age of a person. A baby, for instance, has fewer body cells than an adult. Also size differences between individuals dictate that different numbers of cells must be present in the organs of different people. Human Body Question List Question No: b00763d
