The Genealogy of the Turquand Family About the year 1786, a history of the Turquand family, compiled from original manuscripts was written by Leonard Turquand by the desire of his father Paul (6th) Turquand who furnished many details within his own knowledge. This record was continued in 1813 by Leonard Turquand, and was printed by his daughter, Mrs Elizabeth Pierce in the year 18...... The scarcity of this book has suggested its re-issue with the addition of such information as I have been able to gather of subsequent events connected with the history of the Turquand family - I have also added a short but very interesting account of the flight, with his wife and family from France to England of Mr. Aaron Pain from whom Mary and Elizabeth, the wives of Leonard and James Louis Turquand were descended- London. 1883 William Grellier Leonard Turquands’ 1st account Paul, their first born, who for order sake is called Paul the sixth- Born the 20th January 1715. Jeanne their 2nd Born the 24th July 1720. Louis their 3rd Born the 2nd October 1723 Anne their 4th Born the 6th April 1725 Jean their 5th Born the 16th October 1727 Madelaine their 6th Born the 18th February 1730 Louise their 7th Born the 15th November 1732 Marie their 8th Born the 8th January 1736 To conclude at the death of both of my parents, all their property was to have been equally divided amongst their surviving eight children, but as I and my sister Anne had quitted France for the sake of religion, we never could recover any part of our patrimony on account of the law which forbade anyone who had left France on account of their religion to inherit whatever might be their just right or belonging to them, not even if they had been in possession, all was confiscated, and of course neither my sister nor myself ever received a farthing: although our shares amounted to upwards of 12,000 livres each: and here I leave them trusting that they and myself may find forgiveness at the throne of Grace, through the merits of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Who were the Huguenots?
by Vivian Hill Jordan

Houston, Texas Part 1 (May 1997): Huguenot Origins Some knowledge of the background of the Huguenot movement is essential to doing successful research on Huguenot ancestors. In this first part of a 2-part article, we provide a much condensed version of the Huguenot story. In the second part of this article, which will appear in the August newsletter, additional information will be provided on Huguenot research at Clayton Library and a bibliography of the more important Huguenot sources will be published. The term ‘Huguenot’ is used to describe a particular branch of the Protestant religion—aligned with the theology of John Calvin—that arose during the Reformation and flourished in France after 1520. Although certainly religious in nature, the Huguenot movement also had very distinct political components, which put many of its followers in opposition to the French Monarchy. This, coupled with the fact that the Huguenot’s Protestant theological convictions were in direct conflict with the Roman Catholic Church, set the stage for serious confrontations between the Huguenots and the French Church-State. During the reigns of Henry II of France (1547-1559) and Francis II (1559-1560), the Huguenots grew in both number and political influence and came to include many prominent members of the French nobility, including such influential figures as Anthony, King of Navarre. This increase in strength, however, was looked upon as a threat to both the Monarchy and to the Catholic Church and would eventually lead to civil and religious strife that would see many Huguenot families persecuted and driven out of France.

A Brief History of the HUGUENOTS
(Go to Bottom of Web page for other links) The dominant reformer in the generation after Luther and Zwingli was John Calvin, a French theologian who settled in Geneva in 1536. Calvin's reforms were not as radical as those of Zwingli, but they were accompanied by a severe regime that in effect combined church and state in order to enforce moral and doctrinal conformity. Calvin wrote the first systematic exposition of Protestant theology, set up a democratic presbyterian church government, and founded influen tial educational institutions that trained men such as John Knox, who introduced Calvinism into Scotland, where it became the established Presbyterian church. Calvinism also spread to France, where its adherents were known as < I> Huguenots and to Holland, where it reinforced the Dutch determination to achieve independence from Catholic Spain. Huguenots, name given to the Protestants of France from about 1560 to 1629. Protestantism was introduced into France between 1520 and 1523, and its principles were accepted by many members of the nobility, the intellectual classes

    The Huguenots
A persecuted minority in France during most of the period from the early 1500s until 1789, Huguenots was the name given in the time of the Reformation to the French Protestants. The word may come from the German word Eidgenossen, or "confederates," a term once applied to Swiss Protestants. In their struggles for religious freedom, the Huguenots were driven to become a political party and even a "state within the state," headed by some of the greatest French nobles. By the middle of the 16th century, the Huguenots by their numbers and influence had aroused the fears of the Catholic party and the powerful family of Guise*. Eight seperate religious wars followed. The first war began with an attack by the Duke of Guise and his followers on a congregation of Huguenots assembled for worship in a barn. A period of peace that followed the third war was broken in 1572 by the massacre of St. Bartholomew's Day, the most dreadful of the many crimes that marked this era of religious and civil warfare.

History Information Names Contact Points ... Other Sites History Overview First we must identify a Walloon. A Walloon is a member of a French speaking people of Celtic descent inhabiting southern and southeastern Belgium and adjacent regions of France. Walloon is also the French dialect of these people. The Drainage People The skilled drainage people travelled to where they could find work just as the other artisans in the manufacture of silk, velvet and linen, drainage was an art form. They travelled to London, Norwich, Kent, and other parts of England. The settlement that had been in the English Pale behind Calais remained together, ended up in Middelburg Walcheren. They went, as a body, to Sandtoft, they sailed up the Humber and docked just below Doncaster. Cornelius Vermuyden had had a chapel built for them at Sandtoft, after acquiring permission and installed a little company town which was later burned out and the church destroyed - they then moved to Thorney and environs. In his book, SMILES states: "…a scheme was set afoot for reclaim of drowned lands in Hatfield Chase and the Great Level of the Fens and a large number of labourers assembled under Cornelius Vermuyden to execute necessary works. They were, however, a very different class of men from the modern ‘navvies’ - for wherever they went, they formed themselves into congregations, erected churches, and appointed ministers to conduct their worship. Upward of 200 Flemish families settled on land reclaimed by them in the Isle of Axholme; the ships which brought the immigrants up the Humber to their new home being facetiously hailed as "the navy of Tarshish"….In short, wherever the refugees settled, they acted as so many missionaries of skilled work, exhibiting the best practical examples of diligence, industry, and thrift and teaching the English people in the most effective manner the beginnings of those various industrial arts in which they have since acquired so much distinction and wealth."

I'm Angie, and welcome to my genealogy page. My roots are in North and South Carolina as far back as I've been able to trace, so I've just "erased" the state line in my geography! Most of my family is from around Chesterfield County, SC and Anson County, NC, with another healthy portion from the area of the former Orangeburgh District. I hope to include not only my own family charts and group sheets, but letters, history, family stories and so on from the area. If you have a web site that relates to genealogy or the history of the region, and would like to see it included, please let me know . I'd also like to hear from you if you have any sort of information you'd like to see on-line, but don't have a site of your own for it. I'd be glad to include it here (and a link to your mailbox!).
