The Lehigh and Hudson River Railway
A personal scrapbook
March 31, 1976; the eve of 'C-day', when most railroading in the Northeast became Conrail.
In the early evening, the nightly NE-3 (the 'Phillipsburg turn') awaits its Form 19 authorization to depart Warwick.
When the crew returned to Warwick, after midnight, they were Conrail employees; the Lehigh and Hudson River Railway had passed into history after more than a century of service.

126. Hudson River Bridge (unbuilt)
Descriptive history of the unbuilt river Bridge. Includes drawings of the original proposals by Gustav Lindenthal.
http://www.nycroads.com/crossings/hudson-river-bridge/
Hudson River Bridge proposals:
  • Suspension design by Gustav Lindenthal for a bridge at West 23rd Street (1888). The design featured a 2,850-foot-long main span, two 1,500-foot-long side spans, and a clearance of 150 feet.
Arch design by Max Am Ende (1889). The design featured a 2,850-foot-long main span, two 795-foot-long side spans, two 705-foot-long flanking spans, and a clearance of 150 feet.
Cantilever design by Union Bridge Company for a bridge at West 70th Street (1893). The design featured a 2,100-foot-long main span, two 810-foot-long side spans, and a clearance of 150 feet.
  • (Designs from George Washington Bridge , American Society of Civil Engineers, 1933.)
PLANNING THE FIRST HUDSON RIVER CROSSING: In 1885, Gustav Lindenthal, a bridge engineer who established his reputation on two notable Pittsburgh spans, was approached by officials at the Pennsylvania Railroad regarding the feasibility of a railroad crossing across the Hudson River. At that time, the Pennsylvania Railroad was at a disadvantage vis-à-vis its chief competitor, the New York Central Railroad, because it did not have a direct entrance into Manhattan.
Because of the smoke that emanated from the locomotives of the era, the railroad favored a bridge across the Hudson rather than a tunnel. After giving serious thought to a cantilever design, Lindenthal decided upon a suspension bridge because such a design would allow wider distances between piers. However, the suspension bridge would have to have a main span of about 3,000 feet, nearly twice the length of the main span of the Brooklyn Bridge completed two years earlier.

Tells the story of Henry hudson and his futile attempt to find a Northwest Passage.
    http://www.hudsonriver.com/halfmoonpress/stories/hudson.htm
May 1996 issue Who was Henry Hudson Anyway? And What Happened to Him?
H enry Hudson was an Englishman, possibly the grandson of a London alderman who helped found a trading organization, the Muscovy Company. Hudson was certainly an experienced seaman, commissioned by the Muscovy Company in 1607 to find a quick way from England to the "islands of spicery." He failed in that attempt, and again in 1608 each time foiled by ice floes as he attempted to find a fast northerly passage to "the east." In 1609 the Dutch East India Company, which had a monopoly on trade with the Orient and which wanted to shorten the lengthy and expensive voyage around the Cape of Good Hope, hired Hudson to renew the attempt on its behalf. They provided him with an 80-ton ship, the "Half Moon," and a crew of 20 a combination of Dutch and English sailors. The "Half Moon" sailed out of Amsterdam on April 4 or 6, and after a difficult journey along the coast of Norway and as far east as the bleak coast of Novaya Zemlya, turned west and headed for warmer climes. Reports claim that Hudson had a trying time with the crew, which threatened to mutiny, but persuaded them to help seek the alternative route to the lucrative spices. The quest for the North-West passage led first to the coast of Maine where members of the crew went ashore and cut timber to replace the mast of the "Half Moon." They fished and traded with the

Imagine stumbling onto the beauty of the Hudson Valley by accident.
Englishman Henry Hudson was looking for a quick passage to China as he sailed along America's north Atlantic coast in 1609.
Hudson thought he found what he was looking for when he entered New York bay and what is now the river named for him. He and his crew of 18-20 men, sailing on a ship called the Half Moon , traveled about 150 miles up the river near what is now Albany before realizing it would not lead them to their destination of choice.
Hudson had been hired for the journey by a Dutch trading company, the Dutch East India Co., and his explorations led to the area first being settled by the Dutch.
Early maps and sailing journals tell us that the area was viewed as inhospitable, with wild animals, poisonous snakes, mountains and thick forests too dense to traverse. The river itself was seen as treacherous, especially in the stretch known as the Hudson Highlands. This area begins about 50 miles north of New York City and extends for about 15 miles, between what is now Peekskill and Newburgh. Here the hills rise up more than 1,000 feet along either shore and fierce currents and strong winds made sailing extremely difficult and dangerous. Areas of the river here were dubbed World's End and Devil's Horse Race by the Dutch sailors.

    140. Gustav Lindenthal
Essay by Steven Cangemi about Lindenthal's dream to construct a bridge across the hudson river.
    http://www.ulster.net/~cangemi/lindenthal.html
    A Run for Gustav Lindenthal
    Popughkeepsie, New York
    April 7, 1999
Gustav Lindenthal had a dream. He wanted to build a bridge across the lower Hudson River, connecting Manhattan with New Jersey. I've got a far more modest dream. I want to run across the Hudson River on one of the bridges that has subsequently been built. On Wednesday, I set out from work in Poughkeepsie, New York, to run to and across the Mid-Hudson Bridge. I ran along a perimeter road to the northern edge of the plant site. I then cut through some condo complexes, to avoid having to run on US-9. Here in suburbia, roads don't seem to go through. They are just spider veins coming off the main artery. I come out onto the arterial at a Courtyard by Mariott. I'm pleased by how much strip running I have avoided. It is a warm day, with temperature already in the seventies. Running along a six lane commercial strip makes the heat more unpleasant. I reach Locust Grove, the home of Samuel F.B. Morse, inventor of the telegraph. Just north of Locust Grove is the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery, where Matthew Vassar and thousands of other Hudson Valley residents make their permanent home. I lose the sidewalk at this point, but the grassy strip isn't bad for running. Lindenthal was already a successful bridge builder when he came to New York City in 1885. He made his reputation in Pittsburgh, where he designed and supervised construction of bridges, including the Smithfield Street Bridge. Pittsburgh is a living primer of bridge construction. I don't know of a city with a denser collection of varied bridge designs. The Smithfield Street Bridge crosses the Monongahela River, connecting downtown Pittsburgh with "Sahside". This beautiful bridge is immediately recognizable with its lenticular trusses.
