Because of the quality and number of works in the show, viewers should get a true sense of how the Hudson River school artists not only captured, but also helped to shape the reverence for our nation's beauty and grandeur, which was so prevalent in the mid-19th-century." Due to their patronage, the Wadsworth Atheneum's collection reflects the evolving aesthetic sensibilities of two generations of Hudson River school painters. In turn, the works reveal the emerging sense of an American national identity. They were created to illustrate the beauty of American landscape, but were also connected to a broad range of social, economic, and political developments during their time. This emerging American national identity was also evident in the writings of 19th-century authors such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, William Cullen Bryant, James Fenimore Cooper, and Walt Whitman.

HUDSON RIVER SCHOOL: THE SECOND GENERATION Many works by the second generation of landscape painters recorded intimate scenes of nature rather than the panoramic vistas and dramatic effects of the early Hudson River School. By the 1870s detailed forms were often replaced by softer, less precisely defined images. Wilderness views gave way to pastoral scenes hinting of civilization, typified here by Alfred Bricher's sunset view with its grazing cattle and farmhouse. The woodcutters in Henry Ward Ranger's painting also symbolize the settlement of America's pristine forests. Rural landscapes in midcentury American art reflect the influence of the French Barbizon School. This group of artists, most notably Camille Corot and Theodore Rousseau, painted pastoral vignettes around Barbizon, a village south of Paris. The subtle tones and muted colors of the Barbizon painters resulted in an American movement called tonalism. In this gallery the later work by Inness, along with paintings by Alexander Wyant and Dwight Tryon, exemplify the tonalist emphasis on poetic mood over descriptive detail. The Hudson River PCB Controversy By Anjuli Singh and Revathi Annapareddy Over the past twenty-five years, dredging the PCB's from the Hudson River has become a major source of controversy in the Hudson Valley. Through various studies, scientists have uncovered many health risks associated with excessive exposure to PCB's. Not only are they carcinogenic, they are also the source of many birth defects. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that nobody eat fish or drink water from the Hudson River. One proposed solution for the removal of PCBs from the Hudson is a process called dredging. Ordered by the Environmental Protection Agency, this is a highly controversial approach, as it will destroy the multiple ecosystems along forty miles of the upper Hudson. General Electric and assorted local citizens groups such as C.E.A.S.E. are adamantly opposed to dredging. "The truth of the matter is the river is cleaning itself," said Tim Havens, president of C.E.A.S.E. On the other hand, environmental organizations such as Clearwater and Scenic Hudson strongly support the dredging plan. Within five year's time, they predict that dredging will eliminate nearly all the PCB contamination of the river. Rich Schiafo of Scenic Hudson said, "We have been working on this issue for close to twenty years to try to get the PCB contamination removed from the Hudson River so that we can fully restore and use the Hudson River."

Hudson River School Paintings The Hewitts collected paintings from the Hudson River School of Art. Eight of the eleven members of this group are represented in the Manor: James Peale, Jasper F. Cropsey, John F. Kensett, William C.A. Frerichs, Thomas Cole, Martin J. Heade, Casilear and Thomas Doughty. This page was written by Britt Terjesen. Click on each image for a larger view. Painting by Martin J. Heade (1819-1904) named "Ringwood Meadow" or "Landscape with Cattle", dating to 1859. A Pastoral Scene done possibly at Ringwood Estate depicting Wanaque Stream with cows. This painting is representative of the Luminist Style done by The Hudson River Artists. Painting by Thomas Cole (1801-1848) named "Ramapo Lake Scene", oil on pulp board. Cole was known for his Romantic/Mysticism Style. He was called the founder of the American School of landscape painting. In 1825 he joined the Hudson River School. Painting by James Peale (1749-1831) named "Delaware Water Gap". Oil on wood. Inscribed: "Painted by James Peale in the 69th year of his age 1819". J.Peale started out his painting career doing miniatures on ivory and later turned to still life painting. The miniature painting caused him to lose his eyesight which made him turn to landscape painting. This is believed to be one of his last paintings.

Home Page Lighthouses and the Mighty Hudson From the moment of Hendrik Hudson's trip up the mighty river until today, the Hudson River is one of the most important commercial and recreational rivers in America. Hundreds of cargo ships ply its waters and thousands of pleasure craft skip along its waves. The majestic Hudson transports the goods of America from the inland ports out to the greatest deep water port in the country, New York Harbor. In the early history of the continent, great sailing ships drove the economy of the Colonies as they transported goods from the frontiers of North America down the Hudson to England and beyond. As America became a nation, the mighty Hudson became the central battleground of the Revolution, with the pivotal battle of the Revolution being fought on its banks in Saratoga. With America growing and its economy booming, the connection between the Hudson River and the western inland territories was made with the Erie Canal and commercial shipping traffic exploded. Even today in this age of instant air travel the Hudson serves as the primary commercial artery between the Port of New York and the regions upstate. Great barges and tankers filled with goods travel up and down the river keeping the Empire State moving and thriving. The traditions of industry first established in America on the banks of the Hudson continue to thrive feeding the Hudson with a continual flow of goods going to market.

Main Local New York htmlAdWH('7002362', '234', '60'); HUDSON RIVER LIGHTKEEPERS PRESENTS HUDSON RIVER LIGHTHOUSES From the establishment of Stony Point Lighthouse in 1826 to the building of the Rondout Lighthouse in Kingston in 1915 and to the present, lighthouses have played an important part in the history of the Hudson River. In total there were some fourteen lighthouses built including two at the Rondout Creek in Kingston and a post light with a fog bell at Danskammer Point. There were also numerous other post lights up and down the river. These were kept by "lamplighters". Today only seven lighthouses remain. LIGHTHOUSES OF THE PAST STUYVESANT LIGHTHOUSE COXSACKIE LIGHTHOUSE The Coxsackie Lighthouse was established in 1830 and discontinued in 1939. It was replaced by a skeleton tower and then torn down. In 1890 a post light was erected about a half mile down river with the keeper being responsible for it. One day in 1923, Keeper McDougal was attending to the post light when it gave way, throwing him into the cold waters of the river. Fortunately for him, he was spotted by the captain of a Standard Oil tugboat clinging to the bow of his skiff and thus rescued from a certain death. The same ice jam which had caused damage to the Stuyvesant Lighthouse in 1902 also took its toll on the Coxsackie Light, taking out its north wall, some foundation stones and washing away the station's outhouses. Repairs were completed by that summer. FOUR MILE POINT LIGHTHOUSE Four Mile Point Lighthouse was establashed in 1831 and discontinued in 1928 when it was replaced by a skeleton tower near the waters edge. Little is known about the history of this light. It was built high up on a bluff overlooking a section of shallow mud flats on the river. The original stone tower was replaced in 1880 by a twenty-five foot iron tower. Nothing of either tower remains today and there is no evidence that there was ever a lighthouse on the site.
