January, 2004 issue The Met Hosts Exhibit by Hudson River School Painter A major exhibition of the paintings of Hudson River School landscape artist, Sanford R. Gifford, is currently on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. It is only the second retrospective of his work since the Metropolitans memorial exhibition in 1880 and includes nearly 70 paintings of sites in America, Europe, and the Middle East. It was made possible by Deedee and Barrie Wigmore. Gifford grew up on the Hudson River, in Hudson, just across the river from the Catskill home of Thomas Cole, one of his idols. He briefly attended Brown University, but decided to devote his life to art. In 1845, Gifford went to New York City where he studied drawing, perspective and anatomy with John Rubens Smith. However, inspired by the American landscaper Cole, he turned to landscape painting. He spent the summer of 1846 on a sketching trip to the Catskills and Berkshires and by 1847, had begun to show his work at the American Art-Union and the National Academy of Design. Gifford traveled to Europe in 1855, and spent two-and-a-half years exploring the great repositories of art and sketching scenery in England, Scotland, France, the Low Countries, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy. In England he was impressed by the color and light in the paintings of J. M. W. Turner, although he considered Turner overdid the effects of dissolving light. Gifford also discussed his work with art critic, John Ruskin and studied the French landscape painters of the Barbizon school. He wrote in his journal of the dangers of surrendering to a particular method or school of painting, lest they usurp the place of Nature."

Sanford Robinson Gifford
George Inness: The Visionary Landscape
Long before New York stole the idea of modern art, the Hudson River School brought together a wily gang of thieves. The movement sounds provincial, no doubt, right down to its name. In turn, it promises a specifically American Romanticism. Its landscapes survey far more than New York State or the present. They assert a command of nature, history, and spiritual enlightenment to rival anything in Europe. Two compact retrospectives, of Sanford Robinson Gifford and George Inness Both worked in and around New York. Yet they turn out as fascinated with European currents as with the American scene. The results, oddly enough, influenced American painting as it neared the twentieth century.
The course of a republic
My line about stealing alludes, of course, to a book about Abstract Expressionism. By "the idea of modern art," its French author, Serge Guilbaut , just happens to mean the primacy of French art. In fact, Gifford and Inness both turned for inspiration not just to Europe, but often to the Barbizon school. Those French painters, such as Camille Corot in the 1860s, see even the brightest sky through the densest of woods. They stick to a fairly traditional palette, of somber green and gray, but their loose, foamy brush anticipates Impressionism. Working not far from Paris, they imagine nature as the edge of urban life, and they see that shifting boundary as if through a newly clouded glass.

The Hudson River Museum has long been an important center for the arts in lower Westchester. And it has been getting better every year. It began with Glenview , the John Bond Trevor Mansion, a beautiful example of late Victorian style. Built in 1876, this house has been restored and is a showcase for an important collection of American and European fine and decorative arts. In an adjacent building, the museum's contemporary galleries provide a dramatic setting for changing exhibits of art, architecture, design, and history. The Museum is one of the best places to view works inspired by the Hudson, and has a national reputation for its collections of photography, paintings, graphic arts, and memorabilia relating to the region. Visitors can call for a current exhibition schedule as well as a calendar of the Special Events and Family Programs offered throughout the year, which include Tours, Lectures, Workshops, and other activities. Then there's the Andrus Planetarium . . . the only public planetarium in Westchester County. Here a Zeiss M1015 Star Machine, the only instrument of its kind in the northeast, portrays the heavens in an awe-inspiring fashion. Visitors will be exhilarated by the beauty of it, and educated at the same time.

HUDSON RIVER SCHOOL VISIONS: The Landscapes of Sanford R. Gifford
Edited by Kevin J. Avery and Franklin Kelly. YOUR PRICE: $60.00 Sanford R. Gifford
(1823-1880) was a leading Hudson River School landscape painter and a founder of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He was so esteemed by the New York art world that, at his untimely death, the Museum mounted a show of his workthe first monographic exhibition accorded any artistand published a Memorial Catalogue that, for nearly a century, remained the principal source on his oeuvre.
Gifford's art, which was inspired by the work of Thomas Cole (founder of the Hudson River School) and by that of J.M.W. Turner, and which was enriched by his travels in Europe, came to be called "air painting," for he made the ambient light of each scenecolor-saturated and atmospherically potentthe key to its expression. His approach to painting and his unique style gave rise to a highly distinctive body of work of enchanting and mesmerizing effect.
Beautifully produced, with 237 illustrations, including 81 in full color, as well as a chronology and selected bibliography. Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2003.

The Hudson River School of Painting
At the advent of the nineteenth century, American painting consisted mainly of portraiture. In Europe, paintings of historical and biblical events were prevalent along with figure painting and some portraiture. As America was in her infancy, historical subjects were scarce, as was the affluence needed to develop interest and support for the arts and other cultural developments. The few art patrons that existed commissioned mostly individual and family portraits. For the most part, landscape painting was relegated to cartographic and military uses. Some American artists attempted figure painting and biblical renderings in the "great style" of the Europeans, but these were not very popular. In 1825, two events occurred which would raise patronage and interest in the arts to a new level in America. The first event was the "discovery" of Thomas Cole (1801-1848), the second event was the opening of the Erie Canal. In New York City, a frame-makers shop displayed three landscape paintings by Cole. These paintings were "discovered" by the artist Colonel John Trumbull and were purchased by Trumbull and two other artists, Asher B. Durand and William Dunlap.
