The Hudson River School Painters
by Lynn Salerno
The paintings by Thomas Cole, Asher Durand and Frederick Church reveal the extent to which the Hudson River School was uniquely American. The landscape of America provided a rich and varied subject matter from which each of the three artists drew inspiration. Cole's paintings were dramatic and moody, such as seen in his Landscape with Tree Trunks . Durand's work was romantic, yet it had a softer, more intimate quality, his painting Kindred Spirits is an example of this. Church's painting Niagara Falls shows his skill at capturing the drama and power of nature in art. The Hudson River School painters embraced nature and the American landscape as a worthy subject of representation. Thomas Cole painted the land with a sense of the dramatic energies found in nature. His work, Landscape with Tree Trunks , shows a fierce storm brewing in the distance that is about to sweep across the rugged landscape. His use of color and tone unifies the composition and establishes the mood. Asher Durand's work shows the landscape of America in a different light. He was an engraver and used his abilities to capture the precise details of nature. Like Cole, Durand was a romantic, however, unlike Cole he often included a human element in his work. His painting

Exercise on the Hudson River School of Painters
Background: The Hudson River School was a prominent school of American landscape artists, during the mid-19th century. Many of the artists whose works belong to this school began life as engravers or technical craftspeople. Prior to the Civil War, their works sold very well and one might assume that this reflected an interest, at least with respect to the wealthy, towards the natural, untouched environment. Towards the latter part of the century, with the ascendency of impressionism, artists came to value technique more and the general public and critics found fault with the realism of landscape painting and the school went into decline. Recently, art critics, such as Barbara Novak, have begun to re-interpret and analyze in a different manner the Hudson River school and the paintings have gained a new following.

GLORIFYING THE WILDERNESS: THE HUDSON RIVER SCHOOL OF LANDSCAPE PAINTING
    • The first group of American landscape painters emerged in the 1820s and became known as the Hudson River School. Many of them painted in and around the Hudson River Valley and the nearby Catskill and Adirondack Mountains. Artists, along with poets, novelists, and essayists, delighted in describing and depicting native scenery. Indeed, the untrammeled wilderness and seemingly limitless expanse of virgin continent symbolized the nation's potential for greatness.
    • Influenced by seventeenth-century European landscapes, the works of the Hudson River School are characterized by panoramic views rendered with precise detail. These serene and awe-inspiring vistas, in which a small figure often communes with nature, were intended to evoke elevated thoughts and feelings. The pervasive glow of sunlight, evident in many landscapes in this room, is characteristic of Luminism, a trend among mid-nineteenth-century artists who saw light as landscape's most important binding ingredient as well as a symbol of divine presence.
    • Portrait painting remained popular in the nineteenth century even after the advent of photography. The somber commemorative image of a Civil War hero shown here is a reminder that many of these peaceful landscapes were painted during the tumultuous Civil War era. George Catlin's portrait of three Indians is also a memorial - a document of a vanishing race, its people casualties of American expansion.

Thomas Cole at Mount Holyoke The Hudson River School painter inspires a play and an exhibit. By Chris Rohmann The centerpiece of the current art exhibit at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts, is the most famous and influential of all American landscape paintings. "View from Mount Holyoke, Northampton, Massachusetts, after a Thunderstorm" (more commonly known as "The Oxbow") was painted by Thomas Cole in 1836. On loan from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, it anchors the exhibit "Changing Prospects," an array of artworks and artifacts celebrating the mountain as an inspiration for both art and tourism. In connection with the exhibition, the Mount Holyoke College Theatre Department is producing the biographical play "Thomas Cole: A Waking Dream." In "The Oxbow," Thomas Cole juxtaposes wilderness with civilization, sunshine with storm clouds, a rugged mountainside overlooking a tranquil valley. In his play about Thomas Cole, Donald Sanders juxtaposes fact and fancy, realism and surrealism, humans and angels. "Thomas Cole" is a whimsical biography of the founder and leading figure in the Hudson River School of landscape painting. English-born, Ohio-bred, with little formal training but a prodigious talent and an expansive imagination, Cole revitalized the landscape genre by combining the eye of a realist with the heart of a romantic. At the age of 24, Cole was famous and sought-after, the first American celebrity artist.
