RSS Feeds OUR AFFILIATES Frye mounts small jewels of Hudson River art Thursday, January 27, 2000 By REGINA HACKETT SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER ART CRITIC The first real art movement Americans could call their own was the Hudson River School of landscape painters, active on the East Coast from 1825 to 1878. Among tiny gems in the Hudson River exhibit is William McDougal Hart's "Twilight in the Catskills," 1860, oil on panel, 6 1/4-by-5 1/4 inches. Before that, painters were useful for making portraits of family members and their possessions. Anybody who wanted more went to Europe. Eighteenth-century America was a practical place, populated by those who had more important things to do than contemplate the complexities and refinements of aesthetic objects. Led by Thomas Cole, the Hudson River painters were, first of all, great salesmen. They convinced their countrymen that, as Americans, they had a hammerlock on the sublime. Only they had the good fortune to be living in an artwork. Let Europe have its cathedrals; the open air was America's church, built by the hand of God. Thanks to the miracle of painting, the wealthy could take a little of God's handiwork home with them.

Hudson River School Visions: The Landscapes of Sanford R. Gifford
Back to main page for this exhibition Lake Nemi More about This Exhibition
Brought together from museums and private collections in America and abroad, the works in the exhibition include several that have never before been shown. A highlight is Gifford's last major painting, the ethereal masterpiece of sunlight and shadow from 1880, Ruins of the Parthenon (Corcoran Gallery of Art). The exhibition is made possible by Deedee and Barrie Wigmore. The exhibition is organized by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
More about Sanford Gifford

More about the Hudson River School
Exhibition Organizers Exhibition Publication ... Exhibition Venue More about Sanford Gifford In 1855, Gifford traveled to Europe, where he spent two-and-a-half years visiting the great repositories of art and sketching scenery in England, Scotland, France, the Low Countries, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy. In England, he admired the color and light in the paintings of J. M. W. Turner, and discussed his work with the critic John Ruskin. Gifford was also impressed by the work of the French landscape painters of the Barbizon school, but wrote in his journal of the dangers of surrendering to a particular method or school of painting, lest they "usurp the place of Nature." When Gifford returned to the United States in 1857, he took up quarters in the new Tenth Street Studio Building in New York City but left it nearly every summer to sketch in the countryside. Favorite settings in this period were the Catskills, the Adirondacks, the Green Mountains in Vermont, the White Mountains in New Hampshire, and various locales in Maine and Nova Scotia. The artist's fascination with the transfiguring effects of light on native scenery is apparent in works such as the 1862 painting

Gifford (1823-1880) will present the richness and variety of his achievement and the special qualities of his distinctive style. While his art mirrors the general aesthetic of the Hudson River School, Gifford was a highly individual talent: during the 1850s he gradually evolved a personal style marked by a refined depiction of light and atmosphere. He traveled widely, not only through the American northeast and west, but also in Europe and the Near East. The paintings that resulted from these experiencesincluding his A Gorge in the Mountains (formerly Kauterskill Clove , 1862, The Metropolitan Museum of Art) and Siout, Egypt (1874, National Gallery of Art)not only depict diverse cultures and sights, both natural and man-made, but also rank among the most beautiful and elegant creations of their era.

What exactly is the Hudson River School? Sunday, February 22, 2004 By Mary Thomas, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette As with most art movements, the particulars of what, when and whom are open to discussion, even contention. The failure of Hudson River artist Worthington Whittredge to include so central a figure as Jasper Francis Cropsey in a list of fellow group members in his autobiography led Andrew Wilton of the Tate Gallery, England, to question the usefulness of the designation in a 2002 exhibition catalog essay. Carnegie Museum of Art curator of fine art Louise Lippincott also has little regard for designations that serve historians and critics more than artists and artworks. If it were up to her, she says, she'd call painting such as that in the exhibition "American Romantic Landscape." What the art world seems most in agreement upon is that a group of American artists (some native born and some immigrants), working roughly between 1820 and 1870, portrayed the American landscape in a way that landscape had not been previously painted. By doing so, they developed the first school of American painting. This is especially noteworthy because of the cultural and economic dependency the fledgling nation had on Europe, which set standards of taste and housed the academies and patrons that would support and train artists.

Hudson River School: Masterworks from the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art continues through January 18, 2004 at Stanford, then travels to six other museums across the U.S. The exhibition is organized by the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford, Connecticut, from its permanent collection. The national tour of Hudson River School: Masterworks from the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Ar t is sponsored by MetLife Foundation. The catalogue that accompanies the exhibition is published by Yale University Press. The exhibition's presentation at Stanford is supported by an Anonymous Donor and the Cantor Arts Center members. The origins of the Hudson River School traditionally are attributed to Thomas Cole, who was born in England and raised in Ohio before arriving in New York City in 1825. Cole was a more cerebral painter than his predecessors, and he used his art as a moral as well as aesthetic platform. Breaking from the traditional European taste for manicured pastoral views, Cole depicted the virginal, primeval wilderness of the American northeast. It was a paradise already lost, however, for Native Americans had been chased from their lands, white settlements had been long established, and tourism was beginning to boom. Wadsworth introduced 17-year-old Hartford native and aspiring artist Frederic Church to Thomas Cole, who made Church his sole apprentice. Wadsworth then purchased Church's first mature painting

Hudson River School Exhibition Opens at Worcester Art Museum
WORCESTER, MASS., JANUARY 29, 1999 - Bask in the tranquility of works from America's first national school of landscape painting with "All that is Glorious Around Us": Paintings from the Hudson River School, on view at the Worcester Art Museum from March 13 - June 27, 1999. The exhibition showcases approximately 75 paintings by leading Hudson River School painters such as Thomas Cole, Frederic Edwin Church, and John Frederick Kensett, as well as accomplished examples by lesser-known artists like Regis Francois Gignoux and John Hermann Carmiencke. The majority of the works are from a single private collector, eight works are from the Worcester Art Museum's permanent collection, and a small group of tourist prints are from the American Antiquarian Society. "My goal is to encourage people to recognize that the Hudson River School consisted of many more than the handful of famous painters usually featured in an exhibition of their work, including professional women and African-American artists," says David R. Brigham, curator of American art at the Worcester Art Museum. "I would also like visitors to understand the important cultural themes that are addressed in the works of art, such as notions of change in the land, poetic and religious reflections on nature, and attitudes towards new uses of the land that included tourism and industry." Hudson River School painters were more than talented artists. As if on a mission, they helped create romantic reflections on America's virgin landscape before and during the country's transformation in the 19th century. Land was part of the national consciousness at the time and was considered an inherent part of democracy, wealth, and God's provisions. Hudson River School painters captured this sentiment by painting dramatic landscape scenes that revealed both the tranquility and turmoil settlers could experience as they braved territory in the new world.

Hudson River School painters helped create romantic reflections on America's virgin landscape before and during the country's transformation in the 19th- century. Land was part of the national consciousness at the time and was considered an inherent part of democracy, wealth, and God's provision. Hudson River School painters captured this sentiment by painting dramatic landscape scenes that revealed both the tranquility and turmoil settlers could experience as they braved territory in the new world. As the country became more industrialized, Americans yearned for idyllic illustrations of landscape scenery. They wanted images of the land itself, the Native Americans who dwelt on it, and the adventurous people who settled it. Wealthy merchants, bankers, and factory owners sought landscape paintings as an antidote to the harsh business world. "Armchair travelers" desired paintings of the nation's unsettled western frontiers, which they might never see. And resort owners and their guests wanted paintings of scenes that represented places of rest and leisure. Hudson River School artists accommodated all of these needs by painting panoramic, sweeping vistas with glorious sunsets, many-hued cloud formations, gracefully bowed trees, and majestic mountains that provided a welcome sanctuary from the ills of industrialization.
