Engaged (1609) for the same purpose by the Dutch East India Company, he sailed in the Half Moon to Spitsbergen, where extreme ice and cold brought his crew near mutiny. Hudson, determined not to lose his reputation as an explorer, disregarded his instructions and sailed westward hoping to find the Northwest Passage . He entered Chesapeake Bay, Delaware Bay, and later New York Bay. He was the first European to ascend (1609) the Hudson River (named for him), nearly to present-day Albany. His voyage gave the Dutch their claim to the region. His fourth expedition (1610), financed by English adventurers, started from England. Again he sailed westward, hoping to find the Northwest Passage. Between Greenland and Labrador he entered Hudson Strait and by it reached Hudson Bay. After weeks of exploration, he was forced by ice to winter there. By the next summer (1611) his starved and diseased crew mutinied and set Hudson, with his son and seven men, adrift in a small boat, without food or water. He was never seen again. His discoveries, however, gave England its claim to the Hudson Bay region.

Henry Hudson
by Nancy and Warren
Henry Hudson was born in the 1570s in London, England. He might have sailed to Davis Strait with John Davis in 1587. Hudson might have dreamed of someday crossing this channel.
He made four voyages of discovery. He went to Spitsbergen in 1607. Then in 1608 he sailed to Novaya Zenlya. In 1609 he traveled up a river in North America which he thought would lead to eastern Asia. It is now called the Hudson River. He was sailing for Holland because England would not finance the third voyage as he had brought no riches home to England. He was arrested and put in jail as a traitor. Many English merchants changed the King’s mind so Hudson was released to set out on his fourth and last voyage. In 1610 to 1611 he made his last and final journey. He was financed by english merchants. He sailed through Hudson Strait and into Hudson Bay. He got as far as James Bay, still hoping for a route to Asia. Their ship, the Discovery, got trapped in the ice for the winter. Many of the crew died of scurvy. Some had to eat moss to try to survive. Many crew members perished. When spring came, the survivors wanted to go home to England but Henry Hudson refused. He wanted to continue the search for the Northwest Passage. On June 11, 1611 the remaining crew, lead by Robert Juet, and Henry Greene, rose up in a mutiny against Hudson, his son, and loyal crew members. They were placed in a boat and cast away to die.

Pursuit of shortcut opened the Hudson
By Carol Trapani
Poughkeepsie Journal Henry Hudson English explorer and sea captain Henry Hudson is credited with the first European exploration and navigation of the Hudson River. Which European explorer actually discovered it is a matter of conjecture. It could have been John Cabot or Giovanni da Verrazzano. But Hudson the man and Hudson the river are indelibly linked. His first voyage, under the tutelage of an English trading firm called the Muscovy Co., took him along the coast of Greenland, near Spitsbergen, about 700 miles south of the North Pole. Ice floes forced his ship, Hopewell, which carried a crew of 10 men and his young son, John, to return home. His report of numerous whale sightings led to English and Dutch whaling near Spitsbergen. A second voyage in 1608 also was foiled by the ice. In 1609, Hudson was hired by the Dutch East India Co. Aboard the Half Moon, with a crew of about 20, Hudson again set out, sailing northeast to find the northern passage. But an unhappy crew led Hudson to change course, and he sailed for North America. He traveled as far south as North Carolina, then headed north again, exploring Chesapeake Bay and Delaware Bay.
