Henry Hudson (Watts Library) What I Learned Section 1 Answer the Following Questions:
1. What year was the main overland trade route from Europe to Asia closed?

1453. Trade with Asia was very important to the Europeans. They traded for valuable silk, metals, and spices. Metals were used by the Europeans for money. Spices such as cloves, cinnamon, and cardamom were used to make food more edible. Many of the spices came from the Moluccas Islands, located halfway between the Philippines and Australia. The Europeans called the Moluccas Island the Spice Islands because so many spices could be found there. The main overland trade route from Europe to Asia went through Constantinople. In 1453, the Ottoman captured Constantinople and closed the trade route. The Europeans had to find a new route if they were to continue trading with Asia. In 1499, Vasco da Gama discovered a new trade route around the tip of Africa. This and other trade routes around Africa were opened. However, they were controlled by Spain and Portugal. England and other European countries looked to the northern seas to find a trade route to Asia. John Davis made three voyages between Greenland and Canada. Although Davis never found a passage, he made important discoveries to help sailors who followed him. Some historians believe Henry Hudson was a member of Davis' crew on one of his voyages.

Henry Hudson Libby A, Sarah B. Maris F., Jennifer H. Portrait by Libby A., Map by Meghan G. Henry Hudson was born in the early 1570s in London, England. His first voyage was in 1607. He was an explorer for four years. In the spring of 1611, Henry Hudson died on one of his ships, the Half Moon. Henry Hudson had two main influences. His grandfather, who started the Moscovy Trading Company, was probably a great influence and inspiration to him. But the most inspiring of all was his son who joined him in all his wonderful journeys. Henry had a dream to try and find a sea route to China and Japan going through the North Pole. Before they left, they gathered food, fresh water, sleeping gear, clothes, navigation supplies, and an extra side boat. Henry Hudson voyaged around New York harbor. His crew thought he was insane for not turning back in deadly, icy waters. He navigated by compass mostly. He traveled by land, and has used several different ships. Henry Hudson was a smart and daring explorer, Coming across the Atlantic Ocean and up into the Arctic Ocean, Henry Hudson faced many perils. As the first person to explore so far north he had no maps to follow On his first voyage, he sailed northeast and followed the coast of Greenland and reach Spitsbergan. Unfortunately, huge ice floes sent him back to England. After the Moscovy Company lost interest, Henry Hudson joined up with the Dutch East Indian Company. On his last voyage, his crew put him, his son and seven crew members in a boat to starve.

HENRY HUDSON'S DARING EXPLOITS
Henry Hudson (? - c. 1611)
We know neither Henry Hudson's birthdate nor his birthplace, but we do know that the navigator was already well travelled when he decided to pursue those explorations already undertaken by Martin Frobisher John Davis , George Waymouth (1602) and John Knight (1606) to the bay that would later bear his name. First he tried to find the famous Northwest Passage to Asia between Greenland and the Spitzbergen Archipelago. Then, hired by the Netherlands, he explored the Hudson River to the rapids at present-day Albany. Hudson returned to the service of England when the founders of the East India and Northwest Passage companies, wealthy traders much interested in exploration, asked him to explore Davis Strait further. Hendrick (Henry) Hudson
In April 1610, Henry Hudson embarked on the Discovery with 21 crewmen, including the future pilot, Robert Bylot. Hudson was a determined man but lacked judgement in his choice of sailors. Shortly after leaving, and throughout the voyage, he was mired in conflicts between members of his crew. With constant concerns about how to calm his men, he reached Hudson Strait in June. His mandate was to explore the area west of Davis Strait. The reports by Davis and others, based on the tides and the ice at the mouth of Hudson Strait led him to believe that there was a passage there. After a zig-zag voyage through the ice floes of the strait, he entered the bay that bears his name today. This was a very important step in the explorations of North America as, even by the standards of the great navigators of the 19th century, this would have been a very dangerous and impressive passage.

Explorers of the Millennium
Our web site, "Explorers of the Millennium," will provide students with a wealth of information about the most important explorers of the past thousand years in a simple, easy-to-use format. We included reports on nineteen explorers, chosen by members of our team. We organized the explorers on separate "Hall of Fame" and "Timeline" web pages, so that users can look for a particular explorer by name or by century. We have a links page to help students find other helpful Web sites that relate to the explorers selected. A quiz section gives visitors a chance to see what they know about some of our explorers. A feedback page invites visitors to submit their own nominations for our Explorers' Hall of Fame. We hope that a visit to "Explorers of the Millennium" will answer students' questions about explorers, lead them to new sources of information, and encourage them to think critically about which explorers were the "greatest" and why. http://rootie.geeknet.com/hudson.html
HUDSON FAMILY HISTORY
From the book Hudson Genealogy With Related Families, by Roy D. Hudson, August 1, 1957, a little information on the Hudson name is given:
In early England a man was known by but one name. When surnames first came into use, Richard the son of Roger was known as Richard Fitz-Roger, Fitz being a corruption of the Latin, filius, or son. The nickname of Roger was Hodge, and the son of Roger became Hodgson, Hodson or Hudson, and Richard Fitz-Roger became Richard Hudson.
In the opinion of English genealogosts, the early ancestors of the Hudson family came into England with William the Conqueror in 1066. They were a numerous family, and the names of Richard, John, Henry and William were repeated to the point of confusion.
Henry Hudson, Gentleman, was an Alderman of London. He had acquired wealth in trade and was the Lord of a number of Manors, some of which had been conferred upon him by King Henry VIII for service to the Crown. He died in 1555, and was buried in the Church of St. Dunstans.
Another Henry Hudson, thought to be the son of Alderman Hudson, was a founder and director of the Muscovy Company, probably the father of Henry Hudson, the Explorer, who made two of his first voyages for the Muscovy Company. After the Explorer, and his son, John, had lost their lives at sea, his wife, Katherine apprenticed another son, Richard to the Company. He served in India and died there in 1648. There was another son, Oliver.
