The life of Giovanni da Verrazano
by Ryan I am writing about Giovanni da Verrazano. My explorer was born in 1485. He also was born in Italy. In 1524, he was commissioned by the king of France. He wanted new lands for France and to search for a western sea passage to China. In 1524, he was commissioned by King Francis. I claim new land for a western sea passage to China. He also got killed and eaten by the native of Americans. The Narrow Verrazano Bridge is named after him. He seems to have landed on the coast of present day North Carolina. John Cabot
by Chris I am writing about an Italian explorer named John Cabot. John was born in 1450 in Genoa, Italy. Little is known about him as a boy. We do know he wanted to be a sailor when he was young. In 1497, he sailed for the first time for the king of England. He sailed to North America and landed in Cape Brenton. He also sailed the second time to the New Foundland. We should remember him because he discovered New Foundland. Also he sailed for England to North America. Giovanni Da Verrazano
by Carina Giovanni Da Verrazano was born in about the year of 1485 and died about the year of 1527. He was born in Italy, but we do not know much about his early life. We do know more about his mid and late life.

Among modern historians, Henry Kelsey's contribution to the history of Hbc is often disputed. To some, Henry Kelsey was an important early explorer while to others he was only a minor figure of little historical significance. There are some general facts which are undisputed. In 1690 Henry Kelsey set out southwest from York Factory on the west coast of Hudson Bay and travelled inland. Ironically, his voyage was not to explore, but "to encourage and invite the remoter Indians" to bring their furs eastward to the Company's trading posts on Hudson Bay. So like North America's first travelling salesman, Kelsey set off, taking with him a packet of trade supplies in the hope of making a deal. After a long journey, he reached a sheltered bend in the Saskatchewan River below what is now The Pas, Manitoba. After successfully wintering there, Kelsey continued westward into the Assiniboine country reaching the buffalo-rich Touchwood Hill southeast of present-day Saskatoon. Kelsey spent two adventurous years travelling. He rode with Indians on bison hunts and is believed to be the first white man to view the Prairies. He arrived back at York Factory at the head of a "good fleet of Indians" signalling the success of his mission.

Hudson, Henry
(?-1611), English explorer. Hudson explored North America in an unsuccessful search for the Northwest Passage. During the third of his four voyages, he sailed up the Hudson River to the present-day site of Albany and as far south as North Carolina. Sailing under the Dutch flag, he claimed some of the land for the Netherlands. Later, representing England, he explored Hudson Bay. Set adrift by his mutinous crew, he was left to die and never seen again.

    Rugosa Hybrid ('Schneezerg' seedling)
A wonderful rose which seems to improve with age. I believe it would be several feet larger in the ground than it is in the barrels I've confined it to. Foliage is very rugose, but smaller than most, and very healthy. White with the slightest touch of blush, but the buds are a much deeper pink. Two-inch blossoms are lightly fragrant with a classic old rose perfume. The real Henry Hudson was a 17th century English explorer obsessed with finding the Northwest Passage. His expedition was the first ever to overwinter in arctic Canada. How appropriate - this rose is hardy to zone 2! Lots more information about the Canadian Explorer Series roses at the Canadian Rose Society web site.

    Henry Hudson: Lost Leadership
Don C. Barnett Introduction Use the story of Arctic explorer Henry Hudson to illustrate the importance of leadership. First , locate the river, strait, and bay explored by Hudson's expeditions. Second , brainstorm ideas about the qualities of effective leadership. These should include qualities of fairness, communication, and listening to the wishes of others. Now let's look at the story of Henry Hudson. Hudson is the river that is the life-line of the densely populated industrial American north-east and delta of the largest city in the U.S.A. Hudson is the strait between Frobisher Bay and northern Quebec, as well as the name of the biggest bay in Canada. All are named after Henry Hudson, the Arctic explorer who died in the icy waters of the North. Hudson's dogmatic leadership style combined with the rough and unscrupulous men working on sailing ships in the 1600's was a mix of dynamite and gasoline, waiting only for a spark to ignite an explosion. The seeds of trouble were laid before Henry Hudson left England in 1610 on the ship The Discovery . Hudson's first mate, Robert Juet, had travelled and quarrelled with Hudson on previous voyages. Hudson made a fatal error in having Juet in his crew.

Catalog Page 26 (Hybrid Rugosa) Henry Hudson is a great choice for ground cover as its neat, tidy, low-growing habit produces numerous sparkling white flowers which reappear throughout the summer until frost. Extremely hardy and disease resistant it receives its name from the great explorer who died in vain seeking the Northwest Passage. Canadian rose growers can take pleasure in knowing that some of their hard earned tax dollars have gone towards the development of extremely cold hard roses by various Research Stations operated by Agriculture and Agri Food Canada. The Explorer Series are named for those brave enough to attempt survival of the harsh winter conditions that faced such well known frontiersmen as Frobisher, MacKenzie and Baffin. Some of these are almost entirely from Rugosa parentage while others were bred from the cold-hardy Kordesii roses hybridized in the late 1940's in Germany. For other extremely hardy selections we suggest our Parkland Series. For those in warmer climates, these selections are worth considering due to their strong disease resistance. w / 1976 / 2.5-3" blooms / height 2' / medium green foliage / bud ovoid / moderate fragrance / 20-30 petals / open pollination of the cultivar Schneezwerg / no. 1 / zone 3 and above

Hudson's date of birth and the details of his early life are undocumented. Records indicate that he was married and had three sons. He led four important expeditions, three for the English and one for the Dutch. In 1607 he was engaged by the English Muscovy Company to find a new route to Asia. He was directed to search for a northeast passage in the open waters between Greenland and Spitzbergen. Unable to find an opening in the ice, he returned to England in September. The Muscovy Company financed a second voyage by Hudson in 1608. Taking a more easterly route than he had the previous year, Hudson sailed along the coast of Norway and around the North Cape, hoping to find a passage between Spitzbergen and Novaya Zemlya. Again finding the sea blocked by ice, he returned to England. By this time, Hudson had become widely known in Europe as an explorer of the Arctic waters. In 1609 the Lords Seventeen of the Dutch United East India Company took him into their service and asked him to search once again for the northeast passage. It was on this voyage on his ship, the
