Old House Style Guide
Listed below are several styles of old houses that you can find not just in your area, but all over the country. Each style has a picture of a local building and a description of special characteristics of the style.
Antebellum Craftsman Bungalow Colonial Revival Greek Revival Italianate Neoclassical Queen Anne Tudor Revival Antebellum DESCRIPTION
Most ante-bellum houses, meaning there were built before the outbreak of the Civil War, are the Federal style, as far as grand houses are concerned. They are generally symmetrical and boxy. They have center entrances on the front and rear, evenly spaced windows, gable roofs, and end chimneys. Two good examples in Mecklenburg County are Cedar Grove and Oaklawn. LOCAL EXAMPLES
Cedar Grove

W. T. Alexander House
Craftsman Bungalow DESCRIPTION
Bungalows
were designed by the British for use in colonial India. Therefore, they are fashioned for warm weather. The roofs are hipped, thereby providing large attics for storage and for capturing the heat in the summer. Windows are grouped for greater sunlight and for greater ventilation. Bungalows have broad overhanging eaves, again to hold off the heat, as well as big porches to sit on in the evening. The Craftsman style, of which Bungalows are a subset, is characterized by simplicity and lack of the fanciful ornamentation one finds in Victorian homes. The Ratcliffe-Otterbourg House is an excellent local example of a Craftsman Bungalow.

phone: 27-31-260-3104
fax: 27-31-260-2621 The following suggestions for citations of Internet sources in history and the humanities are derived from the essential principles of academic citation in Kate L. Turabian, A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations , 5th ed. (Chicago, University of Chicago Press, 1987). I have also drawn upon suggestions from some of the works listed in the bibliography below. Since version 1.0 appeared, many people have raised issues about both internet and humanities citation standards. The comments of readers and users of earlier versions have been particularly helpful in making revisions and refinements in the Guide. It has also been improved by the the students of my Historical Methods classes at East Tennessee State University and my fellow H-AFRICA editors. I thank all of these individuals for their assistance. Since the Internet is an evolving institution, this Guide is not intended to be definitive. Corrections, additions, comments, suggestions, and criticisms are therefore welcome. Please address them to the author at:

The following are a few samples of frequently used citations and bibliographical entries for you to use as a model. About the Style Guide As a service to our University of Colorado clients and the entire university community, Publications and Creative Services has developed this University of Colorado at Boulder Style Guide. Adhering to these guidelines is not mandatory; we realize that there are valid reasons for diverging from them in specific cases. Our goal was to produce a reference document that would help campus communicators adopt a style that is consistent and appropriate for university use, especially when they write for an external audience. In the final analysis, good writing "style" is determined not by consistently following rules but by making appropriate rhetorical choices for a given purpose and audience. We assume some mastery of that writing skill and offer this style guide as a way to fine tune your writing for CU. What This Style Guide Is Not This guide is not intended to replace other writing style guides used for specific purposes or publications. Nor is it intended for use by students or faculty writing academic papers. Neither is this guide intended to be comprehensive, although we have tried to include some of the most frequently troublesome issues. For that reason, we have not included field-specific style issues, such as how to present mathematical equations in print. Specialists within departments are better authorities on such matters. We also have omitted lengthy and detailed explanations of most grammatical rules; instead, we have included a list of additional

    SITE DESIGN
In architecture as in all other operative arts, the end must direct the operation. The end is to build well. Well building hath three conditions. Commodity, firmness, and delight.
The Elements of Architecture THE DESIGN OF THE SITE will determine its organizational framework. At this stage you will make the tactical design decisions about what your audience wants from you, what you wish to say, and how to arrange the content to best meet your audience's needs. Although people will notice the graphic design of your Web pages right away, the overall organization of the site will have the greatest impact on their experience. The fundamental organizing principle in Web site design is meeting users' needs. Ask yourself what your audience wants, and center your site design on their needs. Many organizations and businesses make the mistake of using their Web sites primarily to describe their administrative organization, and only secondarily do they offer the services, products, and information the average user is seeking. Most readers won't care how your company or department is organized and will be put off if such inside information is all your site appears to offer. Talk to the people who make up your target audience, put yourself in their shoes, and make the items and services they want the most prominent items on the home page.

    What are style sheets?
Style sheets describe how documents are presented on screens, in print, or perhaps how they are pronounced. W3C has actively promoted the use of style sheets on the Web since the Consortium was founded in 1994. The Style Activity has produced several W3C Recommendations (CSS1, CSS2, XPath, XSLT). CSS especially is widely implemented in browsers. By attaching style sheets to structured documents on the Web (e.g. HTML), authors and readers can influence the presentation of documents without sacrificing device-independence or adding new HTML tags The easiest way to start experimenting with style sheets is to find a browser that supports CSS . Discussions about style sheets are carried out on the www-style@w3.org mailing list and on The W3C Style Activity is also developing XSL , which consists of a combination of XSLT and "Formatting Objects" (XSL-FO).
