Composing Good HTML (section 1 of 4)
This document attempts to address stylistic points of HTML composition, both at the document and the web level. It is available on the Web at http://www.ology.org/tilt/cgh/ (if you are reading this via a mirror, you may want to check the original to make sure you're seeing an up-to-date version). This document is neither finished, nor is it even all that current. It reflects my thinking during the summer of 1995, which is that last time that I had the luxury of spending three months thinking about these kinds of things. The web changes rapidly; in some ways this document is now hopelessly out of date. In other ways, though, it still retains some valuable insights (at least, in my humble opinion). You'll have to be the judge, as the reader, because I have neither the time nor the inclination these days to try to keep this document updated. This text is still largely the same text I wrote that summer, with occasional grammatical and spelling fixes. Caveat emptor! New: This is version 2.0.20 (the old version 1 is no longer available, as of Nov 17 1997). Now that

  • Probably the #1 rule is that you should not use "Click here" to point to a document. Keep in mind that not everyone can "click" (e.g., some people are using non-graphic browsers) and also consider that you or someone else might ever print out the document and on paper, "click here" just seems silly :-) Therefore, it is best if the text of the link actually has something to do with the content. It also makes bookmarks/hotlinks work much better.

Style guide for online hypertext Written by Arnoud "Galactus" Engelfriet . Largely based on Tim Berner-Lee's style guide According to some of the search engines, there are now over thirty million documents on the Web. This means that almost every topic is covered in many locations. If a document is hard to read, or the information therein is hard to find, chances are your reader will go elsewhere instead. That's why it is important to make documents accessible to everyone. This style guide will hopefully help you write easy to read documents.
Terminology
An HTML document (often also called Web page ) is the unit by which information is provided to a reader. An on-line document can be as much as a whole book, just a chapter, a page or even only a footnote. In this guide, a set of documents which logically belong together is referred to as a site This style guide requires some knowledge of HTML and the functionality of the Web. The WDG's HTML reference discusses HTML elements mentioned in this guide in more detail.

If you are asked to use APA format for a paper, the book to consult is the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th edition) , which the American Psychological Association has recently updated. Citing electronic sources was a major part of this update, as these types of sources are increasingly common in research within the social sciences. Using Modern Language Association (MLA) Format
Brought to you by the Purdue University Online Writing Lab MLA style also specifies guidelines for formatting manuscripts and using the English language in writing and also provides a writers with a system for cross-referencing their sourcesfrom their parenthetical references to their works cited page. This cross-referencing system allows readers to locate the publication information of source material. This is of great value for researchers who may want to locate your sources for their own research projects. The proper use of MLA style also shows the credibility of writers; such writers show accountability to their source material. Most importantly, the use of MLA style can protect writers from accusations of plagiarismthe purposeful or accidental use of source material by other writers without giving appropriate credit. All guidelines for MLA style are in the MLA Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing (2nd edition). If you are asked to use MLA format for a research paper, the book to consult is

    Introduction
These notes are a miscellany of grammatical rules and explanations, comments on style , and suggestions on usage I put together for my classes. Nothing here is carved in stone, and many comments are matters of personal preference . Anyone who can resist turning my own preferences into dogma is welcome to use this HTML edition. Comments are always welcome. I should be clear up front: I'm not a linguist, nor a scholar of the history of the language. Linguists are wary of " prescriptive
Why, then, have I spent so much time on a prescriptive and fairly traditional usage guide? Because these notes may be useful in making your writing clearer and more effective . I'm not out to make definitive statements about what's right and what's wrong , and Lord knows I wouldn't be qualified even if I tried. I can, however, make suggestions on things that are likely to

    A or An
Use an in place of a when it precedes a vowel sound , not just a vowel. That means it's " an honor" (the h is silent), but " a UFO" (because it's pronounced yoo eff oh ). This confuses people most often with acronyms and other abbreviations: some people think it's wrong to use "an" in front of an abbreviation (like "MRI") because "an" can only go before vowels. Poppycock: the sound is what matters. It's " an MRI," assuming you pronounce it "em ar eye."
    The Above, The Following.

Action verbs, as the name reveals, express actions ; contrast them with verbs of being . Think of the difference between "I study" (action verb, even if it's not the most exciting action) and "I am a student" (verb of being). It's often wise to cut down on verbs of being, replacing them (whenever possible) with action verbs; that'll make your writing punchier. Whatever you do, though, don't confuse action verbs with the active

Part 1 of The Columbia Guide to Online Style by Janice R. Walker and Todd Taylor ( Columbia UP, 1998 ) presents a guide to locating, translating, and using the elements of citation for both a humanities style (i.e., MLA and Chicago ) and a scientific style ( APA and CBE ) for electronically-accessed sources. The unique element approach used makes this a useful reference book for citing electronic sources regardless of the specific bibliographic style you may be required to use. When in doubt, it is better to give too much information than too little. For more information, see The Columbia Guide to Online Style Documenting Sources in the Text
Parenthetical or in-text references to print publications usually include the author's last name and the page number of the reference (humanities styles) or the author's last name, the date of publication, and the page number of the reference (scientific styles). Often, for electronic sources, some or all of these elements may be missing. Thus, parenthetical references to electronic sources will usually include only an author's last name or, if no author's name is available, the file name, and, for scientific styles, the date of publication or the date of access if no publication date is available. For files with no designation of author or other responsible person or organization, include the file name in parentheses (i.e., cgos.html). For scientific styles with no designation of publication date or date of last revision or modification, include the date of access instead, in day-month-year format (i.e., 16 Aug. 1996).
