    Intermediate
In the previous section , we started developing longer web pages and using new HTML tags in a systematic way. We made some basic font changes. We created some paragraphs, headings, and lists. The problem is that by themselves, these tags are kind of lifeless. An is just like any other out there... right? Fortunately, no. There is a way to style tags, using a language called Cascading Style Sheets CSS ). We already saw a hint of what style sheets can do when we were mucking around with the color and background-color . But CSS can do much more than this, as we'll see starting in this section. The first three pages deal with how to apply styles; we're going to be learning a new framework for applying them that is elegant and efficient. In the beginning we'll be sticking with "color" styles, because these styles are simple and get the point across. After that, we'll start expanding our style vocabulary.

The notes on these pages are for the courses in C Programming I used to teach in the Experimental College at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA. Normally these notes accompany fairly traditional classroom lecture presentations, but they are intended to be reasonably complete (more so, for that matter, than the lectures!) and should be usable as standalone tutorials. '' side by side. If you're just getting your feet wet and would like a somewhat simpler introduction, read the `` Introductory Class Notes .'' If you have had an introduction to C (either here or elsewhere) and are now looking to fill in some of the missing pieces, read the `` Intermediate Class Notes Of course, just reading a book or these notes won't really teach you C; you will also want to write and run your own programs, for practice and so that the language concepts will make some kind of practical sense. Most of my programming assignments (including review questions) are here as well, along with their solution sets. (No peeking at the answers until you've given the problems your best shot!) These notes are arranged for the web in the usual hierarchy by section and subsection. If you want to read through all of them, without keeping track of your own stack to implement a depth-first tree traversal, just follow the ``read sequentially'' links at the bottom of each page.

  • Prediction 1.1: The fundamental unity of life
OH JEHOVA, quam ampla sunt opera Tua. - Carolus Linnaeus
at the beginning of Systema Naturae According to the theory of common descent, modern living organisms, with all their incredible differences, are the progeny of one single species in the distant past. In spite of the extensive variation of form and function among organisms, several fundamental criteria characterize all life. Some of the macroscopic properties that characterize all of life are (1) replication, (2) heritability (characteristics of descendents are correlated with those of ancestors), (3) catalysis, and (4) energy utilization (metabolism). At a very minimum, these four functions are required to generate a physical historical process that can be described by a phylogenetic tree.

Jonathan C. Hardwick and Jay Sipelstein August 12, 1996 CMU-CS-96-161
    Abstract:
We present our experiences in using Java as an intermediate language for the high-level programming language N ESL . First, we describe the design and implementation of a system for translating V CODE the current intermediate language used by N ESL into Java. Second, we evaluate this translation by comparing the performance of the original V CODE implementation with several variants of the Java implementation. The translator was easy to build, and the generated Java code achieves reasonable performance when using a just-in-time compiler. We conclude that Java is attractive both as a compilation target for rapid prototyping of new programming languages and as a means of improving the portability of existing programming languages. This paper is also available as a compressed postscript file (98 k).

Prevention and Treatment of Acute Mountain Sickness

    References
By 37 BC, the ancient Chinese recognized a peculiar illness when they hiked the passes of what they later named the Little Headache and Great Headache mountains. The first westerner to describe mountain sickness was the Jesuit priest, Jose de Acosta, who accompanied the Spanish Conquistadors in Peru. Since then researchers have described the consequences of travel to high altitudes and named the syndrome acute mountain sickness (AMS). Acute mountain sickness is characterized by a constellation of symptoms. Headache is the main symptom. Nausea, vomiting, dyspnea (shortness of breath), and insomnia are other common symptoms. The traveler at altitude can also experience impaired cognition and balance. Onset of symptoms typically occurs within hours to three days after arrival at altitude. These symptoms tend to resolve after several days but can persist for up to two weeks. They can be the harbinger of the fatal conditions, high-altitude cerebral edema and high-altitude pulmonary edema. At intermediate altitudes, 1,500-3,000 meters, up to 25% of unacclimatized travelers may experience AMS. People with serious lung, heart and blood diseases are more likely to develop AMS. Healthy young adults who participate in vigorous activity upon arrival at altitude are also at great risk for AMS. Individuals with a prior history of AMS and who live at low elevations are especially susceptible. Those who travel rapidly to altitude, as is common with air travel, are also at greater risk for AMS.
