HTML Goodies Page Resource ... Yale Style Guide
This Quick-Start HTML Tutorial can help you build a simple Web page with any word processor or ASCII text editor. For this page I started with a text file using Notepad then added HTML tags to tell the browser how to display the finished document. HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) tags will display enhanced text, photos and hyperlinks to other pages. Tags are surrounded by angle brackets and Example: the bold . The closing tag after the word sets the text back to normal.
Using Photographs and Clip Art
HTML tags will display digital photos, clip art and even video on your page. Digital files for the images should be stored with your HTML document. Photos and clip art will enhance a Web site, but excessive visual material creates clutter. It is a good idea to use just enough graphic items and special effects to support your message.
Starting Your First Web Page Now!
Create a source document and save it to your computer as a text file with the .htm extension. You can then view the file by clicking File, Open in the browser's menu.

This is a simple styling language which allows attaching style to HTML elements. Every element type as well as every occurance of a specific element within that type can be declared an unique style, e.g. margins, positioning, color or size. So you might consider these style sheets as templates, very similar to templates in desktop publishing applications. For example:
Linking and Embedding
There are many ways to link style sheets to HTML, each carrying its own advantages and disadvantages. New HTML elements and attributes have been introduced to allow easy incorporation of style sheets into HTML documents.

PGP for ABSOLUTE Beginners
David Hamilton
Are you sending love letters across the internet and worried that they might be intercepted? (They will be!) Are you worried that your family will find the really awful poetry that you've written on your PC? (The kids will!) Have you accidentally downloaded offensive material from the internet and you want to really, truly delete it? (Don't worry, you can!) If so, have no fear because PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) is here. And it's free for personal use. If all you want to do is to understand what PGP can do, without downloading it and using it at this time, just read section 3 The 4 uses of PGP for absolute beginners This posting is to help absolute beginners get started with PGP and so I have kept it to less than 2,000 words in 7 sections (though section 2 refers to a couple of sources from which to download PGP and then set it up). The 7 sections are:
  • Introduction for absolute beginners
  • The best 2 web sites for absolute beginners
  • The 4 uses of PGP for absolute beginners
  • Your first pass phrase for absolute beginners ...
  • 4 things to do next for absolute beginners
    1) INTRODUCTION FOR ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS
I believe that a source of difficulty and frustration for PGP absolute beginners is that there is so much documentation available from so many sources (with most of it being long, detailed and complex) that many of them give up .... and this is a defeat for us all. A scythe needs to be taken to all of this information on their behalf.

    Html Tutorials - Introduction
You can do it...honest These web design tutorials were made for those of you who would like to learn how to make websites but after looking at the code of all those nice webpages on the net, thought "Whoa! this is too complicated". Well, despite looking complicated, html (the code which makes the web page ) is easy to learn. In fact it is easier to figure out then those web design editors which supposedly let you design webpages as you see it (called WYSIWYG: What You See Is What You Get). I don't think so. Unless you're familiar with at least some of the code for making web pages those editors are a real pain to use. So follow along in these lessons as I explain what I've learned so far while trying to build my web site. Hey, where ya going? I may not be a pro but I'll have you making web pages in no time so stick around. Getting down to business All you need to make a webpage is a browser so you can see the masterpiece you've created, and a simple word processor such as Notepad.Yup, Notepad, even for nice fancy pancy web pages. I don't know what you Macheads use but it's probably something similar so follow along.

    Introduction
This document is a primer for writing documents in HTML This guide contains the following sections:
    Basics of HTML
HTML is a very simple SGML-based markup language it is complex enough to support basic online formatting and presentation of hypermedia documents, but no more complex. In fact, if you are familiar with LaTeX, TeX, troff, or Texinfo, you can breathe a sigh of relief at this point, since HTML is quite a bit simpler than any of those. HTML documents use tags to indicate formatting or structural information. A tag is simply a left angle bracket ) followed by a directive and zero or more parameters followed by a right angle bracket ( ). The remainder of this document explains the various HTML directives.
    A Beginning Example
For people who prefer to learn by doing, here is an example of a simple HTML document: Note that any HTML document from anywhere on the net that you access with Mosaic can be easily used as an example; just use the

    http://www.linux.org/docs/beginner/year2000.html
Linux in the Year 2000 As a general rule, Linux is Year 2000 compliant. As with most Unix-like operating systems, Linux currently is written with a 32-bit date representation. This suggests that Linux will have difficulty in the year 2038 unless the kernel and associated source code are migrated to 64-bit implementations capable of handling dates for another two billion years. Given that Linux developers have forty years in which to address the problem, it is very likely that solutions will be implemented long before the year 2038. A simple document
HTML (like most other SGML and XML applications) lets you describe the structure of your document in a way that is portable from one computer to another. This avoids all those problems of incompatibility, because HTML uses only plain ASCII text, which is universally usable on all computers. The key to successful HTML is the use of markup : a method of identifying what the component parts of your information are (eg headings, lists, images, etc). The concept is different from wordprocessors and DTP systems, which can only describe how your text appears on the one particular occasion you print or display it. HTML identifies the structure of your files by letting you use tags to surround the elements
    How to do HTML markup
Here's an example of element tags in use: The tags surround the text: the tag name goes inside angle brackets before the text, and it is repeated after the text with a slash after the opening angle bracket. These are called start-tags and end-tags and the text they surround is called the content of the element.

Contents News Glossary FAQ ... Feedback Beginner's Guide: Overview Allocation techniques Recycling techniques Memory management is a complex field of computer science and there are many techniques being developed to make it more efficient. This guide is designed to introduce you to some of the basic memory management issues that programmers face. Some platforms have specific problems in dealing with memory, which are not covered in depth here. In particular, if you are looking for information on configuring memory under DOS or Windows (EMS, XMS, HIMEM.SYS , and the like), then you won't find The Memory Management Reference very useful. This guide attempts to explain any terms it uses as it introduces them. In addition, there is a Glossary of memory management terms that gives fuller information; some terms are linked to the relevant entries. Memory management is usually divided into three areas: hardware operating system , and application (described in more detail below), although the distinctions are a little fuzzy. In most computer systems, all three are present to some extent, forming layers between the user's program and the actual memory hardware. The Memory Management Reference is mostly concerned with application memory management.
    Hardware memory management
Memory management at the hardware level is concerned with the electronic devices that actually store data. This includes things like

A special thank-you goes to Barbara Beeton, Karl Berry, and William Adams for their editorial corrections and contributions, finding all kinds of mistakes from simple slips of the finger to cultural differences to over-complicated ways of explaining things. It is very difficult for people who write technical documentation to remember how they struggled to learn what has now become a familiar system. So much of what we do is second nature, and a lot of it actually has nothing to do with the software, but more with the way in which we view and approach information, and the general level of knowledge of computing. If I have obscured something by making unreasonable assumptions about your knowledge, please let me know so that I can correct it.
