Beginners Guide to HTML
Getting started
Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) is a text based languages that formats pages for viewing in a 'Browser'. You can compose an HTML document using any simple text editor like 'Notepad' or 'Wordpad' providing the document is saved with an .html or .htm file extension.
HTML code consists of a series of instructions placed inside special brackets to make what are called HTML 'Tags' These are placed either side of the text or object you wish to place in your document.
The layout of the document is split into two distinct parts:
content, title, author, keywords, styles and, in modern pages, Javascript functions.
text and images, (Notice American spellings for 'color' and later on 'center'. These must be adhered to.)

Other tags placed within the BODY tags determine how things appear on the web page. The main ones are listed here:
  • for BOLD text.
  • for ITALIC text.
  • for UNDERLINED text.
  • (H1-largest, H6-smallest)

Other common tags used within the BODY of the document are:
  • (small Java Functions)
  • (carriage return)

A complete list of all the tags and their functions can be found on the HTML Reference Page

Try setting up the following text in 'Notepad'

Web Development Geeks Website Reviews and Critiques View Full Version : HTML beginner....Bead work site Neutrino Hi,
I'm making a website for my mom to sell her beadwork. It can be found at:
http://www.ironton.net/users/neutrino/four/four.html
I'd appreciate any reviews and opinions on the site. Please let me know if you think I should change anything and just how much you like the site layout. Keep in mind that I just started to learn html a couple weeks ago so things might not be done quite correctly. Thanks!
P.S. I realize it might load rather slowly. I plan on shrinking a lot of the image sizes later. Danny Its a very interesting layout. To be honest I think I would put the blue curved thing up in the corner there, because there is this big black space.
Make sure you run your site through http://validator.w3.org too!
I would use a CSS sheet for the text. You can pick a more attractive font and set it to a size and ensure it dosen't change, as your font is very plain.
Notice on this page no images load http://www.ironton.net/users/neutrino/four/orderform.htm
I'd look into that too.

Browsing the Internet is also referred to as "surfing the net". Browsers are the software that allow you to view the files of, or "move about" the Internet... Thus the term "browsing". The browser I prefered was , probably due to having it the longest. Microsoft's Internet Explorer is also easy, giving a smooth e-journey, and now I find myself using it the most. Both will do just about everything, and each have their own set of whistles and bells that the other doesn't. Beginner FAQ: The Nitrogen Cycle, and ``New Tank Syndrome''
    What Is the Nitrogen Cycle?
Like all living creatures, fish give off waste products (pee and poo). These nitrogenous waste products break down into ammonia (NH ), which is highly toxic to most fishes. In nature, the volume of water per fish is extremely high, and waste products become diluted to low concentrations. In aquariums, however, it can take as little as a few hours for ammonia concentrations to reach toxic levels. How much ammonia is too much? The quick answer is: if a test kit is able to measure it, you've got too much (i.e., it's in a high enough concentrations to stress fish). Consider emergency action (water changes and zeolite clay) to reduce the danger. (A more detailed discussion of ammonia toxicity can be found later in this section.) In aquaria-speak, the ``nitrogen cycle'' (more precisely, the nitrification cycle) is the biological process that converts ammonia into other, relatively harmless nitrogen compounds. Fortunately, several species of bacteria do this conversion for us. Some species convert ammonia (NH The desired species of nitrifying bacteria are present everywhere (e.g., in the air). Therefore, once you have an ammonia source in your tank, it's only a matter of time before the desired bacteria establish a colony in your filter bed. The most common way to do this is to place one or two (emphasis on

    Beginner's Guide to Quilting
For those who want to learn to quilt, the WWQP presents a series of quilt projects each designed to teach basic techniques. Each block pattern contains complete directions not only for the block, but also for various projects using these blocks so the beginning quilter can create useful items and gifts while they are learning. Look for a new block pattern approximately every month with new projects increasing in difficulty and building on the techniques learned in the previous projects
    Required Tools
The beginner blocks use techniques such as rotary cutting and machine piecing to give the best results in the shortest period of time. The new quilter will need to have some basic tools to complete the projects presented here. The tools listed below are what we have found to be most useful.
    • Sewing machine
    • Iron
    • Universal sewing needles - size 12
    • Self-healing cutting mat - 16" x 24"
    • Acrylic ruler for rotary cutting - 3" x 24" or 6" x 24", marked in 1/8" increments
    • Sewing pins - glass heads
    • Safety pins - 1" non rusting
    Supplies
While a complete list of supplies is given for each project, the items below will be used in all the projects.

    Understanding Climate Change:
A Beginner's Guide to the UN Framework Convention Introduction: A giant asteroid could hit the earth! Something else could happen! The global temperature could rise! Wake up!
The 1990s have been a time of international soul- searching about the environment. What are we doing to our planet? More and more, we are realising that the Industrial Revolution has changed forever the relationship between humanity and nature. There is real concern that by the middle or the end of the next century human activities will have changed the basic conditions that have allowed life to thrive on earth. The 1992 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is one of a series of recent agreements through which countries around the world are banding together to meet this challenge. Other treaties deal with such matters as pollution of the oceans, expanding deserts, damage to the ozone layer, and the rapid extinction of plant and animal species. The Climate Change Convention focuses on something particularly disturbing: we are changing the way energy from the sun interacts with and escapes from our planet's atmosphere. By doing that, we risk altering the global climate. Among the expected consequences are an increase in the average temperature of the earth's surface and shifts in world-wide weather patterns. Other unforeseen effects cannot be ruled out. We have a few problems to face up to.

Preparing your linux box for the Internet
    Armoring Linux Lance Spitzner
Last Modified: 19 September, 2000 Organizations throughout the world are adopting Linux as their production platform. By connecting to the Internet to provide critical services, they also become targets of opportunity. To help protect these Linux systems, this article covers the basics of securing a Linux box. The examples provided here are based on Red Hat 6.0, but should apply to most Linux distributions. Installation
The best place to start in armoring your system is at the beginning, OS installation. Since this is a production system, you cannot trust any previous installations. You want to start with a clean installation, where you can guarantee the system integrity. Place your system in an isolated network. At no time do you want to connect this box to an active network nor the Internet, exposing the system to a possible compromise. I personally witnessed a honeypot hacked by a script kiddie within 15 minutes of connecting to the Internet. To get critical files and patches later, you will need a second box that acts as a go between. This second box will download files from the Internet, then connect to your isolated, configuration "network" to transfer critical files or burn the patches to a CDROM. Once you have placed your future Linux box in an isolated network, you are ready to begin. The first step is selecting what OS package to load. As of RH 6.0, you have three options, Workstation, Server, and Custom (default). I highly recommend Custom, as this allows you to choose what services are added and how the system is partitioned. The idea is to load the minimum packages, while maintaining maximum efficiency. The less software that resides on the box, the fewer potential security exploits or holes. This means if you do not need a News or Real Audio Server, don't install it. The nice thing about Linux is, if you change your mind, it is easy to add packages later. Regardless of which installation you choose, I would add the manual pages and HOWTO docs. I find the on-line man pages and docs to be a critical resource that add little risk to your system.
