North American Botany and Horticulture
The story of North American botany and horticulture begins with the European explorers and colonists and the exchange of plants between the Old and New Worlds. The first work on display is the second edition of Jacques Philippe Cornut's Canadensium plantarum historia published in 1662, which is regarded as the earliest Canadian flora. It was compiled by Cornut (1606-1661), a Parisian physician who never set foot on American soil, but took great delight in the unique American plants which he obtained from the French traders and explorers for his garden. The first edition was published in 1635. The same year our next item on display, Mark Catesby's Hortus Britanno-Americanus, was published featuring detailed descriptions, illustrations, and instructions on how to grow 85 North American trees and shrubs in Great Britain - all of which could be conveniently obtained from Christopher Gray, a nurseryman of Fulham - where Catesby's own garden had been. There are several interesting aspects to this work - not the least of which is that it did not see publication until fourteen years after Catesby's death. It is clear, however, that the object of the work was to encourage the use of North American plants in Britain. Four years later a second issue was published using a cancel title page, also on display, aimed at the larger European market - renaming the work the
