    Internships
Internships lasting three to six months are available in the Centre for Economic Botany (CEB). We are currently involved in a wide range of research topics relating to useful plants, focusing on the United Kingdom and on the world's tropical arid and semi-arid regions. An internship here offers the opportunity to gain experience in aspects of economic botany and ethnobotany relating to collections, taxonomy and information retrieval and dissemination. Internships do not involve fieldwork or, in CEB, work with living plants. Interns will also become familiar with the range of work carried out in a large botanic garden and the resources available. Summer 2002: interns from France, Canada, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom Internships fall into three parts:
    • Some time, particularly in the first month, assisting with a range of routine tasks in the CEB, often aimed at making its collections better available to users or answering enquiries from outside Kew. These activities often involve databasing and online searching, and training is given in using many of the new information sources available.
    • Carrying out one or more small research or curation projects. Usually we have a particular project in mind; sometimes a project develops from the specific interests of the intern. The first month of an internship offers the opportunity to explore Kew's resources, and to develop a topic in consultation with Kew staff. Projects will always need to fit with the Centre's research and curation priorities, but these offer broad scope. Publication in printed or online form is strongly encouraged.

    Collections

The Botany Library is one of 20 branch libraries in the Smithsonian Institution Libraries system. It was established in the winter of 1965-1966 when the Botany Department moved into the newly-built West Wing of the Natural History Museum and several collections of botanical literature were consolidated into a separate library. It provides research support for the Botany Department and the large number of botanists world-wide who use the collections and resources The Horticulture Branch Library was also one of the libraries in the Smithsonian Institution Libraries. It was established in 1984 as a research support resource for the Horticulture Services Division, which is responsible for the management of the gardens, grounds, greenhouses, and interior plantscaping at the Smithsonian Institution.
The Library evolved from a small office collection that was begun in the early 1970s. Since that time, this collection has been enhanced by the donation of several large gifts. An acquisition in 1984 of more than 150 American titles on landscape design dating from the 19th- and early 20th-centuries has become the foundation of a growing collection the subject. It is housed in the Arts and Industries Building, adjoining the offices of the Horticulture Services Division.

Other related subjects are botanical history, especially of North and South America, ethnobotany, plant exploration, and botanical illustration. Geographical coverage is world-wide, with a special emphasis on the neotropics.
Special Collections Several gift collections are incorporated in the library: the John Donnell Smith Collection of general botany; the Hitchcock- Chase collection, primarily on grasses; the E. Yale Dawson collection on algae and marine botany and the lichen portion of the John S. Stevenson collection on mycology. All are fully cataloged. The library also includes a general vertical file, which includes guides to many botanical gardens and arboreta, a biographical vertical file and a card index to biographical information in the botanical periodicals covering the year 1980 to the present.

    60. A Career In Landscape
to gain exemption from normal minimum requirements if they have relevant experience eg at technician level in architecture, horticulture, botany or forestry.
    http://www.l-i.org.uk/career.htm
    A career in landscape
Virtual reality is one of the newest technologies used by landscape architects. This view along the Quayside towards the Tyne Bridge in Newcastle is part of a video developed by Insite Environments to help people view a proposed development. The video won the LANDCADD Sponsor's award in the 1995 LI Awards. Landscape architects, managers and scientists create landscapes to make the area we live in a pleasant place. They may design public parks, reservoirs, the surroundings of public buildings or private gardens. What they design must fit in with the environment. Landscape architects have degrees or the equivalent. Technicians need at least good GCSEs. Landscape Architects
Landscape architects can work on settings for all sorts of buildings, roads, parks and play areas, and other construction projects such as housing developments. The aim is to do the least possible damage to the scenery and ecology of the area. Landscape specialists often work on projects such as preserving the coastline, rescuing sites which have been left derelict and restoring disused pits and quarries. Landscape architects don't just work in the countryside - they are also concerned with making our towns and cities more pleasant to live in.
Whatever the particular project, there are similar things to be done. Landscape architects hold discussions with their clients to find out what the job is all about. They make visits to the site to carry out surveys, and then draw up plans and designs (see pictures, left and right). These have to be agreed with the client. There is a good deal of paperwork to do. The detailed plans have to include projected costs for the project, including cover for maintenance work after the project is completed!
