US Presidents as Masons. Herbert Hoover?
For pretty accurate reading on the subject: Freemasonry and The Presidency by Ray V. Denslow, 10,000 Famous Freemasons by William R. Denslow, and Freemasonry in American History by Allan E. Roberts. Federal Lodge #1 of Washington DC has a listing of Masonic Presidents and anti-Masonic presidents. The Grand Lodge of North Carolina's web page has an interesting discussion of Masonry and prejudice. In doing my research I also discovered that Herbert Hoover gave ALL his presidential pay to charity. I can't help wonder why some of the rich ahemfolks who held office after him didn't see fit to emulate that fine example! People of more modest backgroundsEisenhower, Clinton, or Carter come to mind probably needed their wages, but Kennedy or the incumbent?" My question: Perhaps some WAISer Hoover specialist can add information about Hoover's affiliation with the Masons. Is his name in the Federal Lodge I of Washington, DC? Ronald Hilton - 1/3/02

Year In Review "Next to religion, baseball has furnished a greater impact on American life than any other institution." - Herbert Hoover H erbert Hoover played shortstop as a child and truly loved the game of baseball. He attended quite a few games as President but he was often booed because of the great depression occurring in the country. President Herbert Hoover Quotations From Herbert Hoover "Baseball is the greatest of all team sports." "I pride myself on being one of the oldest fans. I can certainly count up about seventy years of devotion." "I protest that we fans are being emotionally starved and frustrated by long periods of perfect performance of these batteries. More over, when there are nothing but strikes and balls going on, you relapse into your worries over the Bank of England, or something else." "I returned to the white House after midnight more depressed than ever before. I had long since arranged to attend the World Series in Philadelphia the next day. Although I like baseball, I kept this engagement only because I felt that my presence at a sporting event might be a gesture of reassurance to a country suffering from a severe attack of 'jitters.'" "I SEND YOU MY HEARTY CONGRATULATIONS UPON BEGINNING THE THIRTIETH YEAR OF YOUR GREAT CAREER AS MANAGER OF THE NEW YORK GIANTS, IN WHICH YOU HAVE DONE SO MUCH TO UPHOLD THE TRADITIONS OF CLEAN SPORTSMANSHIP IN THE MOST BELOVED NATIONAL GAME." - Telegram to John McGraw in 1932

Wickersham as chairman, to study the problem of enforcing prohibition . The rest of his administration was dominated by the major economic depression ushered in by the stock market crash of Oct., 1929. Hoover, believing in the basic soundness of the economy, felt that it would regenerate spontaneously and was reluctant to extend federal activities. Nonetheless he did recommend, and Congress gave the funds for, a large public works program, and the Reconstruction Finance Corporation was created (1932) to stimulate industry by giving loans unobtainable elsewhere. Congress, which had a Democratic majority after the 1930 elections, passed the Emergency Relief Act and created the federal home loan banks. As the Great Depression deepened, veterans demanded immediate payment of bonus certificates (issued to them in 1924 for redemption in 1945). In 1932 some 15,000 ex-servicemen, known as the

    Hoover Corbis-Bettmann Documents
    (b. Aug. 10, 1874, West Branch, Iowa, U.S.d. Oct. 20, 1964, New York, N.Y.), 31st president of the United States (1929-33), whose humanitarian image, earned as chief Allied relief administrator during World War I, was tarnished when his Republican administration was accused of failing policies during the Great Depression Orphaned before he was nine, Hoover was reared by an uncle in Oregon. He graduated as a mining engineer in Stanford University's first class (1895) and gained broad experience during the next 18 years as administrative engineer on industrial projects on four continents. Caught in China during the Boxer Rebellion (June 1900), Hoover was active in directing relief work for foreigners. In London at the outbreak of World War I (1914), he was made head of Allied relief operations and later chairman of the Commission for Relief in Belgium. With the U.S. entry into the war (April 1917), Hoover was appointed national food administrator to stimulate production and conserve supplies. In a 12-month period of 1918-19, his food administration furnished 18,500,000 tons of food to the Allies and to famine areas of Europe. His operations spread over 30 European countries and distributed $100,000,000 worth of aid. Later, he headed Mississippi flood-relief activities (1927) and also participated in post-World War II famine-relief work in Europe. Appointed secretary of commerce in 1921, Hoover undertook the reorganization of the department, in addition to organizing new divisions to cover radiobroadcasting, commercial aviation, better housing, and greater highway safety. His endeavours as chairman of the Colorado River Commission and of the St. Lawrence Waterways Commission culminated in the construction of Hoover Dam and the St. Lawrence Seaway.

Out of the 43 U.S. presidents in the country¡¯s 214 year history, only 10 have libraries celebrating their memory funded by the government. The presidential library for former president Bill Clinton is expected to open soon, bringing the number to 11. The Nixon library operates outside the centralized presidential library system and contains records from before and after his administration. The 10 existing presidential libraries that have been dedicated in the names of former U.S. presidents are Herbert Hoover, Harry S. Truman, Jimmy Carter, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Abraham Lincoln, Gerald R. Ford, Lyndon B. Johnson, John F. Kennedy, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan. These are not traditional libraries, but rather repositories for preserving and making available the papers, records, and other historical materials of U.S. Presidents since Herbert Hoover. Each Presidential Library contains a museum and provides an active series of public programs. The Jimmy Carter Library is located in Atlanta Georgia, about two miles from downtown, and about 15 miles from Atlanta's Hartsfield International Airport.
