Hail to the Chief and BATW Ambassadors Hymie and Quinton Merkaloy for taking the beans to meet yet another American President! Good day, fellow Americans and patriotic vegetables, and welcome to West Branch, Iowa, the little town that was the birthplace of our 31st President, Herbert Hoover. Today the beans had the pleasure of touring his Presidential library, and of course his final resting place. (No Presidential visit would be complete without it, now would it?) Herbert Hoover was born in 1874, and after a successful career as a mining engineer around the world, he ended up helping hungry people around the world during and after WWI. As Director of the American Relief Administration, his efforts helped feed 350 million people in 21 countries between 1918-19. For this alone, the beans offer Mr. Hoover all the props in the world. If there's one thing that the frijoles are against, it's going to bed with an empty tummy. Herbert became U.S. President in 1928, and served for a single term, then spent the rest of his life working for the people as chairman of the Boys Club and helping to establish the children's welfare groups CARE and UNICEF. See? Not all of our elected officials are selfish dolts...every once in a while, a good guy does comes along.

ON POLITICS: "We in America have had too much experience of life to fool ourselves into pretending that all men are equal in ability, in character, in intelligence, in ambition. That was part of the claptrap of the French Revolution. We have grown to understand that all we can hope to assure to the individual through government is liberty, justice, intellectual welfare, equality of opportunity, and stimulation to service." American Individualism, ON HIMSELF: "You can’t make a Teddy Roosevelt out of me." "My boyhood ambition was to be able to earn my own living, without the help of anybody, anywhere." David Copperfield. Few Americans have known greater acclaim or more bitter criticism than Herbert Hoover. Born on August 10, 1874, Hoover was the son of a Quaker blacksmith, orphaned at an early age, and achieved international success as a mining engineer and world-wide gratitude as "The Great Humanitarian" who fed a billion people in 57 countries during and after World War I.
Within a few short months after being elected 31st President of the United States, in a 1928 landslide, the global hero had become a scapegoat in his own land. Even today, Hoover remains indelibly linked with the Great Depression that put millions of his countrymen out of work in the 1930's. Hoover's once bright reputation was put in shambles, yet he refused to fade away.
By the time of his death in October, 1964, Hoover had regained much of the luster once attached to his name. The Quaker theologian who eulogized him at his funeral did not exaggerate when he said of Herbert Hoover, "The story is a good one and a great one...It is essentially triumphant."
Herbert Hoover National Historic Site was established to commemorate the life of this uncommon person. The Historic Site contains the cottage where Hoover was born, a blacksmith shop similar to the one owned by his father, West Branch’s first one room schoolhouse, the Friends Meetinghouse where the Hoover Family worshipped, and several homes of the era. Also located on the grounds are the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library-Museum, the Hoover Presidential Library Association, the gravesites of the President and Mrs. Hoover, and an 81-acre tallgrass prairie.

He would soon regret these promises. The year following his inauguration, the stock market crashed, sending the U.S. economy into the Great Depression, the most desperate times Americans have ever known. Born in 1874 into a Quaker family in rural Iowa, Hoover was orphaned by the age of nine. Determined to go to the newly established Stanford University in California, Hoover worked hard to improve his mediocre grades. After graduating from Stanford with a degree in geology, Hoover became a mining engineer, traveling the world to evaluate prospective mines for potential purchase. He married the brilliant Lou Henry, the only female geology student at Stanford. Lou Hoover quickly mastered eight languages in their travels later, she and the President would often speak Mandarin when they wanted to avoid being overheard by the White House staff. By 1914, Hoover was a self-made millionaire several times over, wealthy from high-salaried positions, profitable silver mines he owned in Burma, and royalties from the leading textbook on mining engineering that he had authored.

Herbert Hoover:
Iowa Farm Boy and
World Humanitarian

(Herbert Hoover National Historic Site) A lthough some people remember Herbert Hoover as the man who was President during the early years of the Great Depression, others may know him as a complex public servant, the "Great Humanitarian" whose career spanned a remarkable seven decades. A graduate of Stanford University, Hoover became a successful mining engineer before organizing relief programs for the starving victims of World War I. As Secretary of Commerce under Presidents Harding and Coolidge, he helped to create safer highways and aircraft, better health care for children, and the standardization of commercial products. And, in 1927, he mustered a fleet of 600 boats and 60 airplanes to rescue 325,000 Americans who were left homeless during the catastrophic Mississippi River flood. Following World War II, President Truman chose him to help the hungry people of Europe once again, and he spent his "retirement" years as an amazingly prolific author, speaker, and government adviser. Continuing his life-long desire to help needy children, he also served as chairman of the Boys' Clubs of America, helping to open 500 new chapters throuhgout the United States. TABLE OF CONTENTS

    Herbert Clark Hoover Born: Birthplace:
West Branch, Iowa Herbert Clark Hoover was born at West Branch, Iowa, on Aug. 10, 1874, the first president to be born west of the Mississippi. A Stanford graduate, he worked from 1895 to 1913 as a mining engineer and consultant throughout the world. In 1899, he married Lou Henry. During World War I, he served with distinction as chairman of the American Relief Committee in London, as chairman of the Commission for Relief in Belgium, and as U.S. Food Administrator. His political affiliations were still too indeterminate for him to be mentioned as a possibility for either the Republican or Democratic nomination in 1920, but after the election he served Harding and Coolidge as secretary of commerce. In the election of 1928, Hoover overwhelmed Gov. Alfred E. Smith of New York, the Democratic candidate and the first Roman Catholic to run for the presidency. He soon faced the worst depression in the nation's history, but his attacks upon it were hampered by his devotion to the theory that the forces that brought the crisis would soon bring the revival and then by his belief that there were too many areas in which the federal government had no power to act. In a succession of vetoes, he struck down measures proposing a national employment system or national relief, he reduced income tax rates, and only at the end of his term did he yield to popular pressure and set up agencies such as the Reconstruction Finance Corporation to make emergency loans to assist business.

Herbert Clark Hoover (August 10 , 1874 - October 20 , 1964) was the 31st ( 1929 - 1933 ) President of the United States . Order: 31st President Term of Office: March 4 , 1929 - March 4 , 1933 Followed: Calvin Coolidge Succeeded by: Franklin Delano Roosevelt Date of Birth Monday , August 10 , 1874 Place of Birth: West Branch, Iowa Date of Death: Tuesday , October 20 , 1964 Place of Death: New York City . New York First Lady : Lou Henry Profession: engineer Political Party : Republican Vice President : Charles Curtis
Family background
Hoover was born into a Quaker family in West Branch , Iowa , but after his parents' deaths lived in Newberg, Oregon . In the summer of 1885 eleven-year-old Bert Hoover boarded a Union Pacific train headed west to Oregon. Sewn into his clothes were two dimes; he also carried a hamper of his Aunt Hannah's homemade delicacies. Waiting for him on the other end of the continent was his Uncle John Minthorn, a doctor and school superintendent whom Hoover recalled as "a severe man on the surface, but like all Quakers kindly at the bottom." Hoover's six years in Oregon taught him self-reliance. "My boyhood ambition was to be able to earn my own living, without the help of anybody, anywhere." As an office boy in his uncle's Oregon Land Company he mastered bookkeeping and typing, while attending business school in the evening. Thanks to a local schoolteacher, Miss Jane Gray, the boy's eyes were opened to the novels of Charles Dickens and Sir Walter Scott. "David Copperfield," the story of another orphan cast into the world to live by his wits, would remain a lifelong favorite.
