Herbert Clark Hoover
Hoover was born in Iowa. He was a Quaker. In 1922, Hoover, then Commerce Secretary, participated in the first successful long-distance television demonstration in New York. He was the first president to have a telephone right on his desk. Hoover required White House servants to be "invisible." Whenever he or the first lady appeared, the servants would jump into the nearest closet to avoid being seen. Hoover was one of two Presidents who did not accept a salary for being President. When Hoover invited the black wife of a congressman to the White House for tea, he was officially denounced by the state legislature of Texas. Charles Curtis, Hoover's vice president, was the only nonwhite person to be elected vice president of the U.S. He was a Kaw Indian.
When the Hoovers wanted to speak privately while in the presence of White House guests, they spoke Chinese. His son had 2 pet alligators that would sometimes wander around the White House. A common sign held up by hitchhikers during the fall of 1932 read: "If you don't give me a ride, I'll vote for Hoover."

Inaugural Address of President Herbert Hoover Monday, March 4, 1929 My Countrymen:
THIS occasion is not alone the administration of the most sacred oath
which can be assumed by an American citizen. It is a dedication and
consecration under God to the highest office in service of our people. I
assume this trust in the humility of knowledge that only through the
guidance of Almighty Providence can I hope to discharge its ever-increasing
burdens.
It is in keeping with tradition throughout our history that I should
express simply and directly the opinions which I hold concerning some of the
matters of present importance.
Our Progress If we survey the situation of our Nation both at home and abroad, we find many satisfactions; we find some causes for concern. We have emerged from the losses of the Great War and the reconstruction following it with increased virility and strength. From this strength we have contributed to

U.S. Presidents, Vice-Presidents, First Ladies and Family Herbert Hoover U.S. President Bold Ink Signature on Waldorf-Astoria Stationery P-900. Hoover obtained a degree in engineering from Stanford University in 1895 and while still a young man made a fortune as a mining engineer . In June 1900, while working for a private corporation in China , he and wife Lou were trapped at Tientsin for almost a month during the Boxer Rebellion . The Hoovers risked their lives helping to rescue endangered Chinese children. During and after World War I he directed relief efforts in Europe and served as U.S. food administrator. As secretary of commerce (1921-1928) he reorganized and expanded the department, focusing on the problems of unemployment and foreign trade. He received the Republican nomination for president in 1928 and was elected in a landslide. The stock market crash of 1929 and the ensuring Great Depression dominated his administration. The high rates of the Smoot-Hawley tariff act , which Hoover reluctantly signed, made matters worse. In 1932, with unemployment approaching 14 million, Hoover was overwhelmingly defeated for reelection by Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt

The 42 Presidents were born in 20 of the 50 states (or in colonies that later became states). This lesson uses maps to process and report information from a spatial perspective. Students will identify the states that have presidential birth sites and will differentiate the states with more presidential birth sites on a map. Inherent in this lesson is the ability to recognize all 50 of the United States on a map. Connections to the Curriculum: Geography, social studies, current events, history
