Herbert Hoover Son of a Quaker blacksmith, Herbert Clark Hoover brought to the Presidency an unparalleled reputation for public service as an engineer, administrator, and humanitarian. Born in an Iowa village in 1874, he grew up in Oregon. He enrolled at Stanford University when it opened in 1891, graduating as a mining engineer. He married his Stanford sweetheart, Lou Henry, and they went to China, where he worked for a private corporation as China's leading engineer. In June 1900 the Boxer Rebellion caught the Hoovers in Tientsin. For almost a month the settlement was under heavy fire. While his wife worked in the hospitals, Hoover directed the building of barricades, and once risked his life rescuing Chinese children.

One week before Hoover celebrated his 40th birthday in London, Germany declared war on France, and the American Consul General asked his help in getting stranded tourists home. In six weeks his committee helped 120,000 Americans return to the United States. Next Hoover turned to a far more difficult task, to feed Belgium, which had been overrun by the German army.

Last updated 2 Sep 2000 Everyone knows that the average life span of humans has increased markedly in the 20th century, but has it increased for everyone? An informal study of U.S. presidents may yield some surprising answers. My aim is to look at the effect of medical advances over the last two centuries on the longevity of those who are most likely to have access to those advances. I think presidents make an interesting (if small) sample because of their demographic uniformity: all are white male politicians, almost all are military veterans, and presumably all had sufficient wealth and/or prestige to command whatever medical resources were available in their later years. Of the 41 men who have held the office, 5 are still alive (Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton), 4 were victims of homicide, all from gunfire (Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, Kennedy)*, and 32 died of natural causes (4 while in office: Harrison, Taylor, Harding, FD Roosevelt). These 32 are listed below by date of death. The "ordinal" figure is the order in which each served as president, Cleveland having served two non-consecutive terms. NAME ORD-

Information on the accomplishments in the Life of Herbert C. Hoover, former president of the U.S.
Abraham Lincoln is often admired as being the man who was born in a log cabin, but through hard work and overcoming many adversities he arose to become President of the United States. The same can be said about Herbert Hoover, yet most people seem to remember is that he was President when the depression hit. And most of the blame was put on his shoulders. Even today when the economy is on a downswing you will here people say, " Well the Hoover days are upon us again." If one takes a look into the life of Hoover they will find a man who knew poverty, sorrow, and the value of hard work. bodyOffer(17051) Herbert Hoover was born in 1874 to poor Quaker family in Cedar County Iowa. He was the second child in a family of three children. By the time he was eleven both parents had died. The three Hoover children (older brother and younger sister) were separated and lived among various relatives. For the first few months Hoover lived with and uncle and aunt, who owned a farm. On the farm young Hoover did his share of the work on the farm. He cleaned out the barn, milked the cows and even work in the potato fields. An uncle in Oregon, who had just lost his son, decided he wanted the orphan Hoover to come live with him. So Hoover spent the remainder of his childhood in Oregon, where he received his basic education. He proved to be a very bright student.

When World War I broke out, Hoover was in London. Deeply influenced by his early years with his Quaker family, he determined to turn to public service. The American ambassador requested his help to bring some 200,000 stranded Americans back home. Next he was asked to organize a Belgian relief commission, which grew in tremendous proportions to provide millions of tons of food, clothing, and medical supplies to refugees in Eastern Europe. The operation had its own fleet of 200 ships, and brought "the great humanitarian" as he was called, into the public attention. When the United States entered the war in April 1917, Hoover was called to Washington to head the Food Administration, which encouraged American agriculture and food conservation. After the war he was put in charge of American Relief, and directed distribution of food to the starving peoples of Europe. Throughout all these humanitarian achievements, Hoover drew no salary, and paid his own expenses. From 1921-1928 Hoover served as secretary of commerce to Presidents Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge. Under his management, the Bureau of Standards encouraged manufacturers to standardize parts and supplies. Federally collected statistics on export opportunities were made publicly available. Hoover pushed flood control and navigation improvement on the Mississippi. Government entered regulation of radio broadcasting and civil aviation. Hoover's public reputation was enormous because of these activities, and in 1928, after Coolidge announced he would not seek reelection, Hoover launched a successful campaign.

His goal was to be a mining engineer. His Presidency: During Hoover's first year in office the stock market crashed and the country headed toward a major depression. Hoover took many measures to bring relief to out-of-work and hungry people. But with 10 million people jobless, nearly everyone blamed him for the difficult times. He lost the 1932 election by a large margin. His Life: Son of a Quaker blacksmith, Herbert Clark Hoover brought to the Presidency an unparalleled reputation for public service as an engineer, administrator, and humanitarian.

    HOOVER, HERBERT
, engineer, philanthropist, and thirty-first president of the United States. Born in West Branch, Iowa, into a Quaker family, Hoover was orphaned at the age of nine and was reared by relatives in Iowa and Oregon. Although Hoover's religious training was quite rigorous, he retained few outward signs of his Quaker upbringing, aside from his style of dress. His personal and professional aggressiveness (which made him a millionaire by the age of forty) was inconsistent with Quaker ideas of moderation, and he could swear with the roughest of the miners he directed as an engineer. Moreover, he was a habitual smoker, enjoyed a drink, and often fished on Sundays, albeit in a high collar and necktie. But he exhibited his early Quaker training as president by relying more on the power of negotiation than on force (especially in Central America and the Caribbean) and by supporting arms limitation, international arbitration, and moral suasion in foreign relations. Hoover is still remembered primarily as a heartless depression president despite his philanthropic and government work during the First World War as head of the Commission for the Relief of Belgium, then as director general of the postwar American Relief Administration, and finally as President Woodrow Wilson's U.S. food administrator and director general of relief for Europe. These activities had made him such a popular figure by 1920 that both parties courted him as a presidential nominee. He refused to run but did serve as secretary of commerce in the administrations of Presidents Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge, transforming his department into one of the most important and well-publicized agencies of the federal government. As commerce secretary Hoover helped develop some advanced economic theories on business cycles and industrial standardization, and he supervised regulation of the nascent radio and aviation industries.
