A brief History of the Hong Kong College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists
When the postgraduate training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology was first started in Hong Kong, it was modelled after the British system. There was no local professional body to award postgraduate professional degrees. The trainees in obstetrics and gynaecology had to undergo the training as stipulated by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG), pass the Membership Examination organised by the RCOG to become Members of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (MRCOG). To help the RCOG in monitoring the training in Hong Kong, a representative committee was established in Hong Kong consisting of members elected among the local members of the RCOG.
In November, 1985, the Hong Kong Representative Committee of RCOG felt that in view of the Sino-British Agreement, it was time to consider the possibility of establishing a local body for the recognition and supervision of postgraduate training in obstetrics and gynaecology in Hong Kong. A Working Party on Future Postgraduate Training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Hong Kong was established by the Representative Committee for this purpose. Professor Ho-Kei Ma was elected as the chairman of the Working Party.

History of Cricket In Hong Kong home about cricket in hong kong history Check the following links to learn about the origins of cricket in Hong Kong and the on-going development of the sport to safeguard its future: Cricket Today And Beyond Cricket in Hong Kong is at the crossroads. On the first of July 1997 Hong Kong became a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, thus ending 159 years of British rule under which cricket has established a strong tradition in Hong Kong. There are some unique challenges facing cricket here that make the game an exciting experience, in keeping with the fast lifestyle of Hong Kong. Grounds suitable for cricket are at a premium in such a crowded city. Not only that but, given the oppressive summer heat and humidity, most sports are played in the cooler winter months including cricket, meaning even greater competition for use of grounds. Add to that the fact that many people in Hong Kong nowadays are reluctant to give up a whole day to play a game of cricket because of business or travel commitments, but still want to play. In this environment it is necessary to cater for cricketers by being imaginative and flexible. Cricket in Hong Kong today is played over 35 overs (Saturday League) and 50 overs (Sunday League). The programme is tight but manageable. School matches are played in the mornings. A six-a-side competition has been introduced in the summer months to cater for more cricketers - although it is hot, these players are prepared to endure it for an hour and a half in the interests of getting a game.

For people who have never been there, Hong Kong conjures up images of its skyscraper skyline, its plethora of pop stars and Christmas shopping queues.

[file photo] But when it comes to the culture of Hong Kong, many may shake their heads or turn their thoughts to the history of the country's ancient cities, like Beijing, with their long and genuine heritages. But they are likely to change their less than positive views if they visit the ongoing Hong Kong exhibition at the National Museum of China to the east of the Tian'anmen Square. Titled "Bits of Old Hong Kong," the exhibition, which runs until July 29, offers an overview of the history and local development of the special administrative region. It is co-sponsored by the national museum, the Hong Kong Museum of History and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's government. It features 150 cultural relics and 128 photos from the collection of the Hong Kong Museum of History.

THE ROYAL HONG KONG AUXILIARY AIR FORCE
History
On 1 March 1993 a parade was held at the Royal Hong Kong Auxiliary Air Force Headquarters adjoining Kai Tak Airport. Unlike previous parades which had taken place in the hangar and on the aircraft dispersals, this was a significant but sad occasion. It was a final parade to mark the disbandment of the RHKAAF, and the handing over of its aircraft and duties to its successor, the Government Flying Service. On the last day of that month, the Squadron Standard was laid up in St. John's Cathedral, and on 1 April 1993 the final flypast of RHKAAF aircraft took place over Victoria Harbour. The RHKAAF had come into existence in May 1949, but the "Auxies" who marched and flew their way into history in 1993 could trace their lineage to 1854 when, even before there were aeroplanes, there were "volunteers".
Following the first Opium War, Hong Kong Island is ceded to Britain by the Treaty of Nanking.
With the withdrawal of British naval and military forces from Hong Kong for service in the Crimea, a notice is issued in the Government Gazette on 1 June calling on "the faithful inhabitants of this Colony to form themselves into a core of Volunteers for the defence of the lives and properties of themselves and their families". Ninety nine volunteers respond to this call, and the Hong Kong Volunteer Corps is formed, the successors to which are the Royal Hong Kong Regiment and the Royal Hong Kong Auxiliary Air Force. A toast to the memory of the "Ninety and Nine" is drunk at all formal occasions involving either unit. The toast is traditionally proposed by the longest serving member present.

sssss Home History History The first recorded yacht racing in Hong Kong began under the auspices of the Victoria Regatta Club which held its first meeting in October 1849 and regattas and other races were held by the Club sporadically until 1890.
In the previous year, 1889, several yachtsmen raced by mutual agreement in a small class of boat known as Mersey Canoes and in 1890, for the better management of racing, they formed themselves into the Hong Kong Corinthian Sailing Club. Mr M Beart was elected as President of the Club. In 1891 at the first General Meeting it was decided that the officers of the Club should be a Commodore, Vice Commodore, Captain, Secretary and treasurer and that the affairs of the Club should be managed by a Committee consisting of the officers of the Club and three other boat-owning members. At the General Meeting of the Hong Kong Corinthian Sailing Club held in October 1893 a resolution was passed that application should be made to the Admiralty for permission to call the Club "The Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club" and to fly the blue ensign with a distinctive mark on the flag. A warrant was granted by the Lords of the Admiralty on 15th May 1894.

History
The British took control of Hong Kong in 1841 following the Opium Wars. European trade with China had been taking place since the 16th century, but as European demand for tea and silk grew, the balance of trade became more and more unfavourable to Europeans, who were expected to pay in silver. In 1773, the British unloaded 70,000 kg of Bengal opium, and the Chinese taste for the 'foreign mud' grew exponentially. Alarmed at the drain of silver from the country and the increasing number of addicts, the emperor banned the drug trade. The Europeans, with the help of corrupt Chinese officials, managed to keep the trade in opium going until 1839, when the emperor again issued orders to stamp it out. The British sent an expeditionary force to China to exact reprisals, secure favourable trade arrangements and obtain use of some islands as a British base. The force blockaded Canton (now called Guangzhou) and a number of other ports, ultimately threatening Beijing. The British pressured the Chinese into ceding Hong Kong Island to them in perpetuity. Both sides ultimately repudiated the agreement, but Commodore Gordon Bremmer led a contingent of naval men ashore on 26 January 1841 and claimed the island for Britain. A series of conflicts followed, with the British backed by French, Russian and American interests. A combined British and French force invaded China in 1859, forcing the Chinese to agree to the Convention of Peking, which ceded the Kowloon Peninsula and nearby Stonecutters Island to the British. In 1898, the British also gained a 99-year lease on the New Territories, which they felt essential to protect their interests on Hong Kong Island.

Emory Report Feb. 8, 1999 Volume 51, No. 19
Action-filled Hong Kong cinema has long history What do swordplay, gunplay, melodrama and ghosts have in common? "Hong Kong cinema," according to Film Studies Professor David Cook. Fighting with swords and guns, exaggerated drama and a bent for the supernaturalghosts, vampires and the spirits of dead ancestorsare four basic ingredients in the last 20 years of films from Hong Kong. This spring Cook is teaching the course, "Hong Kong Cinema," to 40 graduate and undergraduate students. Besides screening more than a dozen films, the course involves reading and discussing books on Hong Kong cinema, the economic history of the three Chinas and the social history of Hong Kong. "We're exploring the market system and the culture that created this national cinema," explained Cook. Hong Kong's film industry has existed since the beginning of the century. Early on, the city-state stood in the shadow of Shang'hai, a more sophisticated metropolis. But during the years of the mainland's civil war (1946-1949), the movie business took off. Hong Kong became the home for free market film in the region. After World War II, Hong Kong experienced tremendous growth and quadrupled in size, becoming one of the world's leading cities. The mid-1960s brought a boom in martial arts films, a genre that became the mainstay of Hong Kong cinema. Cook said the practice of martial arts is central to Chinese culture. "Martial arts embrace Zen Buddhism and began as a form of exercise (Tai Chi) practiced by Shaolin monks in the fourth century A.D. to control and harness their physical energies," he explained. "From the beginning, the domestic and Southeast Asian market for these films was tremendous, helping to make Hong Kong the eighth largest exporter of films in the world."
