History
The MIT Club of Hong Kong is one of the longest-operating MIT alumni/ae clubs outside of the United States. According to the Association of Alumni and Alumnae of MIT , the Club was established on December 19th, 1951. Throughout its existence, the Club has been capably run by many different individuals for the purpose of advancing the interests of the Institute and serving the MIT community in Hong Kong.
In the past, the Club had held dinner receptions for Dr. Charles Vest, MIT President , as well as various deans and professors of the Institute. Back in 1980, a dinner was held in which world-renown architect Mr. I.M. Pei was guest of honor. In 1992, the Club in conjunction with the MIT Sloan School of Management held a 2-day symposium, entitled Managing Technology: The Role of Technology in Asia in the 21st Century featuring Sloan School Dean Lester Thurow . More recently, the Club sponsored a dinner talk given by Mr. Robert Metcalfe, a pioneer in Internet technologies. But one of the more popular functions ever organized by the Club remains to be the MIT Invitational Sports Day . It started in 1982 as a family day held for Club members and has since become an annual event participated by other university alumni clubs and their members.

AmCham Hong Kong
About AmCham > History The Founding of AmCham In 1968, a group of executives formed an organizing committee to propose the establishment of an American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong. This new chamber was designed to represent the ever-growing range of American business interests in the colony. In addition, the Chamber was to serve as a forum for the exchange and development of ideas among members of the business community, both in Hong Kong and throughout the Asia-Pacific region. Opening of present AmCham office, December 10, 1996. From left to right: Richard Boucher, Former US Consulate General; Mark Michelson, AmCham Chairman; Frank Martin, AmCham President The Chamber's registration as a society was approved by the Hong Kong government in March 1969. The first office was opened at 322 Edinburgh House and the first official Chamber meeting was held on May 17, 1969 at the American Club. The 1970 ACCHK membership directory lists 128 corporate charter members and 13 individual charter members. An early goal of the Membership Committee was to recruit all of the estimated 400 American companies and individuals resident in Hong Kong. By year-end 1970, total membership had increased to 319. Officers of ACCHK, as the Chamber was then known, participated as observers in the first meeting of the Asia-Pacific Council of American Chambers of Commerce (APCAC) October 6 and 7, 1969. The very first item on the agenda was the "Gore Amendment" which proposed to eliminate the statutory tax exemption for income earned by overseas U.S. citizens. The amendment was subsequently dropped from the final tax reform bill a victory for APCAC!

History
World Guiding Origin The Boy Scout Movement was officially founded in 1908. In 1909, a Boy Scout rally was held at Crystal Palace in London, and Baden-Powell was taken aback when a number of girls attended, proclaiming themselves to be girl Scouts. Baden-Powell invited his sister, Agnes, as the girls' leader and chose the name Girl Guides after the famous corps of guides in India who were "distinguished for their general handiness & resourcefulness under difficulties, and their keenness & courage". Baden-Powell felt that the Movement for girls should be run by women, so in 1910 he asked his elderly sister Agnes to undertake the work of adapting his book of Scouting for Boys, for use with girls. That year the Guide Movement was formally founded, with the establishment of the Girl Guides Association. In 1910, Baden-Powell, now Sir Robert Baden-Powell, retired from his army career and devoted himself to Scouting and to the beginning of Guiding. He attended camps, rallies and jamborees all over the world, and it was during a world tour in 1912 that he met Olave Soames, his future wife. After a brief courtship, the couple were engaged and married that same year.

Ho ng Ko ng, an area of 410 square miles on the south coast of China became part of the British Empire as a result of the Treaty of Nanking (1842). On the 1st July, 1898, Hong Kong was leased to Britain for a period of 99 years. The day after Pearl Harbor the Japanese Army attacked the colony and although British forces provided valiant resistance they were forced to surrender on 25th December 1941. British forces recaptured Hong Kong on 30th August 1945. During the Chinese Civil War a large number of refugees entered Hong Kong and the population of the colony increased from one to four and half million between 1946 and 1949.

About the Series: The Story The Reviews The Artist Exhibitions ... Sources 'Signed and Sealed' is a series of 30 Limited Edition Lithographs by artist, Pat Elliott Shircore. The images were created by blending extracts from the original documents marking the beginning and end of Hong Kong's colonial history, the Treaty of Nanking (or Nanjing as it is now called) of 1842, when China ceded Hong Kong 'in perpetuity' to Britain, and the Second Convention of Peking of 1898, when the area under British rule was extended by lease for 99 years. On June 30th 1997, the date of the Hong Kong Handover, that lease expired, the British renounced all claims to the territory and Hong Kong was handed back to China. This series of work pays tribute to Hong Kong's heritage and explores the surprisingly harmonious mixture of signatures, seals and the individual cultural mores which shine through every page of the legal documents as an unwitting expression of Hong Kong's rich multi-cultural legacy, both British and Chinese. Through the fusion of images, textures, colours and tones, the artist has created a truly dynamic series of pieces. Pat has blended individual elements from the

Hong Kong is 236 different islands where history, Chinese heritage, ancient festivals and rural tranquillity rub shoulders with countless shops, restaurants, markets, concert halls, pleasure parks and museums. Hong Kong is stylish hotels, designer clothes and sometimes high prices. But it is tops for service and always value for money. Hong Kong has always been a highly-charged assault on the senses - even more so as visitors flock to see the colony now it is under Chinese rule. But even with Hong Kong's return to China, it is unlikely that the basic tourist attractions of shopping sightseeing - and good food - will ever change. Where to stay: Hotels

Jewish Contributions to Hong Kong
The Hong Kong Jewish Community Today
Commercial ties in South China brought Jewish merchants to the port of Hong Kong for centuries, but a real Jewish presence did not arrive until 1842, when Hong Kong became a British Crown Colony. The Sassoon family, a wealthy Sephardic dynasty whose mercantile empire extended across Asia, and the Kadoorie family, another prominent Sephardic dynasty, moved their business to Hong Kong in 1842. They procured mostly Jewish employees, mainly of Baghdadi origin, to encourage Jewish population growth. Fifteen years later, in 1857, the Hong Kong Jewish community was formally established. The Ohel Leah Synagogue, built by Sir Jacob Sassoon, opened in 1901, and the Jewish Club, built by the Kadoorie family, also opened during the early 1900s. The Jewish population, which had totaled 60 Sephardim in 1882, grew to 100 in 1921 (mostly Sephardim), and 250 in 1954 (half Sephardim and half Ashkenazim ). Growth then slowed, and the population numbered only 230 in 1959, and 200 in 1968, (70 Sephardim and 130 Ashkenazim).

  • The Early Years The Kowloon Cricket Club came into existence 4th October 1904, following a meeting of Kowloon residents interested in forming a cricket club. A committee to draw up a set of rules and to determine entrance fees and take initial steps to put the Club in working order was established. The committee comprised Dr JH Swan and Messrs J Celland, D Cowan, RJ Macgowan, BJ Stevens, PG Scott Cranston and J Parkes. Some time in 1905, unfortunately records indicating the exact date have been lost, the Government leased a section of the King's Park on a yearly basis to certain of the founder members who acted as trustees of the ground on behalf of the Club. The Club's first Annual General Meeting was held on 15th October 1905 with Dr Swan presiding as Chairman.

Thank you President Ng, Prof. Fan, and Glenn. I'm honored to participate in HK Baptist University's Consul General in Residence program. President Ng and Prof. Fan deserve much credit for their efforts to promote an international outlook at Baptist, and I'm delighted to be able to do what I can to assist. Some of the students in the audience might be asking, what is the benefit of an international outlook? Let me put it in concrete terms for you soon-to-be graduates. According to a recent survey, Hong Kong employers found graduates with cross-cultural experience to be more flexible, open-minded, independent, and possessing a broader vision of the world and economic trends. In short, they are better prepared to succeed in an increasingly competitive and globalized economy. U.S.-Hong Kong Relations

    A Historical Perspective

Y.C. Richard Wong at the Asia Society Conference:
"Hong Kong One Year After Transition: Business
    Opportunities and Policy Challenges"
    June 15, 1998
    Introduction

The story of the emergence of Hong Kong as a modern metropolis from a small fishing village on the South China coast is now standard fare in almost all history books about the territory. What is left untold in this caricature is that Hong Kong was a busy crossroads of trade and cultural intercourse. Indeed, Hong Kong's fortunes rose and fell with its changing relationship with the Chinese mainland over two millennium
With sovereignty over Hong Kong having been restored to China from Britain on 1 July 1997, it is useful to recount the real history, review the period under British rule, so as to find our bearings for the future. This historical perspective is especially important for it puts into perspective the British contribution to the economic development of Hong Kong, especially in the post-war period. It also puts into perspective the many economic and social policy debates that are surfacing now and will be developing in the years ahead.
