    Chronology
Hong Kong fulfilled multiple roles in the first half-century or so after it became a British colony in 1842. During that period, Hong Kong occupied the front line in the development of Chinese nationalism; it served as a major conduit for Chinese emigration; and it offered many Chinese their first exposure to both good and bad aspects of "the West." (see note 1) Under a Joint Declaration made in 1984 between Britain and China, in which Britain acknowledged Hong Kong's dependence on the mainland for such vital resources as drinking water, the entire colonyHong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territoriesreverts to China upon the expiration of the lease on the New Territories at midnight on 30 June 1997. Britain and China fought the Opium Wars over China's right to restrict foreign trade in general and the opium trade in particular. In the eighteenth century, the European passion for things Chinese, particularly silk, ceramics and tea, had led to a thriving international commerce that was highly profitable for China. However, the Manchu Qing dynasty restricted foreign merchants to the southeastern city of Canton (Guangzhou). They did not do so out of any disdain for commerce, as is sometimes mistakenly assumed, but because, given spreading European colonialism in Asia, they were extremely wary about the possibly detrimental effect on imperial control of permitting an unrestrained foreign presence in China.

Martial Arts: A Little Background The use of Chinese martial arts for military strategy and as a subject for scholarship dates back at least as far as the Zhuzi Baijia (the various schools of thought from pre-Qin to early Han Dynasty), and is recorded in military texts of the Warring States period. Traditional Chinese theories of natural science and religion, along with legends, customs, and pictographic symbols, have been incorporated into Chinese martial arts, extending their range beyond mere military or self-defense purposes into a form of knowledge.

On July 1, 1997, Hong Kong, a fervently capitalist and increasingly democracy-minded British colony, came under the control of China, a Communist nation that values stability over individual freedoms. The New York Times looks at the forces that have shaped Hong Kong and at the story unfolding as this dynamic city-state undergoes a radical change of leadership.

History: The terms under which the reversion took place were settled at an agreement signed by the British and Chinese Governments in December 1984. As well as confirming the terms of previous agreements, the 1984 agreement contained guarantees on the future of Hong Kong, specifically that the territory would enjoy a high degree of autonomy, especially in the economic field where its existing system would be largely left intact. The slogan ‘one country, two systems’ was coined by the Chinese to describe the future regime and its relationship with mainland China. Only in the fields of foreign affairs and defence would the new Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong be subject to the diktat of Peking. The main point of contention in the period leading up to handover was political representation. Under the colonial regime, democratic representation had been kept to a minimum and executive powers were firmly retained by the Governor. The system has survived, largely intact, since the departure of the British in July 1997. Beijing selected the shipping tycoon Tung Chee Hwa to fill the new post of chief executive with powers analogous to those of the former Governor. A pro-Beijing political party created shortly before the handover, the Democratic Party for the Betterment of Hong Kong (DAB), took control of the LegCo after the first election held under Chinese rule in May 1998. The result has been more or less repeated in subsequent polls. The limited powers of the LegCo and the restricted nature of the electoral franchise mean that no serious opposition can be mounted to the policies of the administration. In June 2002, Tung Chee Hwa was confirmed in a second term of office as chief executive.

For people who have never been there, Hong Kong conjures up images of its skyscraper skyline, its plethora of pop stars and Christmas shopping queues. But when it comes to the culture of Hong Kong, many may shake their heads or turn their thoughts to the history of the country's ancient cities, like Beijing, with their long and genuine heritages. But they are likely to change their less than positive views if they visit the ongoing Hong Kong exhibition at the National Museum of China to the east of the Tian'anmen Square. Titled "Bits of Old Hong Kong," the exhibition, which runs until July 29, offers an overview of the history and local development of the special administrative region. It is co-sponsored by the national museum, the Hong Kong Museum of History and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's government. It features 150 cultural relics and 128 photos from the collection of the Hong Kong Museum of History. "We want visitors to take a trip back up the river of time," said Joseph Ting, who is the co-curator of the exhibition, along with Wang Nan, a researcher with the National Museum of China.
