The British sent an expeditionary force to China to exact reprisals, secure favourable trade arrangements and obtain use of some islands as a British base. The force blockaded Canton (now called Guangzhou) and a number of other ports, ultimately threatening Beijing. The British pressured the Chinese into ceding Hong Kong Island to them in perpetuity. Both sides ultimately repudiated the agreement, but Commodore Gordon Bremmer led a contingent of naval men ashore on 26 January 1841 and claimed the island for Britain. A series of conflicts followed, with the British backed by French, Russian and American interests. A combined British and French force invaded China in 1859, forcing the Chinese to agree to the Convention of Peking, which ceded the Kowloon Peninsula and nearby Stonecutters Island to the British. In 1898, the British also gained a 99-year lease on the New Territories, which they felt essential to protect their interests on Hong Kong Island. In the early 20th century Hong Kong began a gradual shift away from trade to manufacturing. This move was hastened by the civil war in China during the 1920s and by the Japanese invasion in the 1930s, when Chinese capitalists fled to the safer confines of the colony. When the US embargo on Chinese goods during the Korean War threatened to strangle the colony, it was forced to increase its manufacturing capacity and develop service industries, such as banking and insurance. Hong Kong's existence was threatened again when the Communists came to power in China in 1949 and during the Cultural Revolution in the 1960s. Although the Chinese could have re-taken Hong Kong with ease, a precarious peace prevailed.

In 1894, bubonic plague swept through Hong Kong. The resident gweilo population, living in clean, spacious dwellings on the heights, was largely spared, but the crowded, unsanitary Chinese working-class neighborhoods were devastated. Ships refused to dock in Victoria Harbour and mass graves were quickly filled in Kennedy Town. As the Chinese dropped like flies, the colonial newspaper, the Hong Kong Telegraph , dispaired for the future of its round-eyed readers: "Soon every European will have to wash his own shirt and pull his own rickshaw," it exclaimed! As my namesake observed, the horror, the horror. (From Edward Marriott's, The Plague Race) Posted by Conrad on November 19, 2003 12:19 AM TrackBack

Hong Kong in Transition - History
During the 17th and 18th centuries, Britain with its strong naval forces was expanding its empire and colonialism all over the world. Eventually, it came to China and wanted to extend its political and economic influences At that time, China's major contact with the outside world was at Canton (Guangzhou) where most overseas traders from Britain, the United States and elsewhere lived and worked in a small society, and were closely monitored by Chinese officials. With silk, cinnamon, and tea in great demands, international tradings were conducted orderly and peacefully. Then came the opium. With almost unlimited supply from its then colony - India, British aggressively introduced opium into the China market. And it was in Canton that the illegal and highly profitable opium trade flourished. Soon, opium addiction grew to epidemic proportions, ravaging Chinese society. Both bodies and souls of thousands of Chinese were eaten away by the addiction of opium and turned effectively useless and harmful to the society. To stop the tide, the Qing emperor appointed Lin Ze-xu as the special commissioner in Canton to clean up the opium trade. Lin forcefully collected and destroyed the overseas traders' opium supplies. Suffering huge financial losses, many British opium traders, including two of the biggest, William Jardine and James Matheson, demanded action from their government. This led to the First Opium War of 1840-1842.

    History
After 1949, when the Communists took control of mainland China, hundreds of thousands of refugees crossed the border, making Hong Kong's urban areas some of the most densely populated in the world. Problems of housing, health, drug addiction, and crime were the target of aggressive governmental programs, and Hong Kong's long-standing water problem was eased by the construction of an elaborate system of giant reservoirs and the piping in of water from China. In May, 1967, Hong Kong was struck by a wave of riots and strikes inspired by China's Cultural Revolution. The government reacted firmly, and, although the Chinese retaliated by briefly stopping the piping of water and by attacking British representatives in Beijing, relations between Hong Kong and China soon resumed the surface harmony that had existed since the late 1950s. The crackdown in 1989 at Tiananmen Square in Beijing inspired fears that China would not respect Hong Kong's autonomy, and in the next few years many business people left, affecting Hong Kong's economy. In 1991, Hong Kong's first direct legislative elections (which accounted for about 30% of the seats) were won almost entirely by liberal, prodemocracy candidates, and no pro-China candidates were elected.

Hong Kong History and Culture
History The British took control of Hong Kong in 1841 following the Opium Wars. European trade with China had been taking place since the 16th century, but as European demand for tea and silk grew, the balance of trade became more and more unfavourable to Europeans, who were expected to pay in silver. In 1773, the British unloaded 70,000 kg of Bengal opium, and the Chinese taste for the `foreign mud' grew exponentially. Alarmed at the drain of silver from the country and the increasing number of addicts, the emperor banned the drug trade.

Hong Kong History
The city's history is generally documented from the 17th century when the Manchus ruled China, but there is evidence of early settlements dating back 2,000 years. Fishermen and farmers were thought to be the first to settle the area in the 14th century. Situated near the mouth of the Pearl River, early Hong Kong was the haunt of pirates as well. Although China regarded trade with foreigners distasteful, it allowed the Portuguese to establish a colony in nearby Macau in the mid 1550s to trade in Chinese goods, and Guangzhou on the Pearl River was opened to foreign traders in 1685. Uninterested in foreign goods, China thrived on exports of its teas, silks and porcelain. The situation changed in the late 18th century when British traders discovered the Chinese would buy opium, which they imported from India. When the emperor tried to end the lucrative practice, Britain seized upon the issue to expand economic trade in the region, prompting the Anglo-Chinese War of 1839-42 (known as the Opium War). No match for Britain's warships, China reluctantly gave up Hong Kong island to the British in 1841. Other concessions in land and trading opportunities were wrested from China in other skirmishes. It subsequently was forced to cede the Kowloon Peninsula and scores of surrounding islands - roughly 90% of Hong Kong - but successfully negotiated the transfer so that it was done as a 99-year lease.

Hong Kong Histroy
By Laura Baginski At the culmination of the Opium Wars in 1841, the British Empire acquired what was at that time considered a booby prize of a colony: Hong Kong. The name is Cantonese for "Fragrant Harbor" due to the incense factories that once dotted the island, but the British sneeringly referred to it as a "barren rock" when they signed the treaty. The Brits soon changed their minds once they discovered Victoria Harbor's value as one of the best deep-water ports in the world. Hong Kong has blossomed at a blinding rate in the past 160 years, and now the "barren rock" boasts the most valued real estate in the world. Its strategic location as a gateway to China, combined with the entrepreneurial attitude of its inhabitants, make Hong Kong

''Albert is so amused at my having got the island of Hong Kong'' wrote Queen Victoria to King Leopold of Belgium in 1841. While her husband could see the funny side of this apparently useless little island off the south coast of China, the British foreign secretary, Lord Pairnerston, was less amused. He considered the acquisition of Hong Kong a massive bungle. 'A barren island with hardly a house upon it!' he raged in a letter to the man responsible for the deal, Captain Charles Elliot. Western Traders The British were not the first westemers to open trade with China. Regular Chinese contact with modern European nations began in 1557, when the Portuguese were given permission to set up a base in nearby Macau. Jesuit priests arrived in 1582 and established themselves at Zhaoqing, a town west of Guangzhou. Their scientific and technical knowledge aroused the interest of the imperial court, and a few priests were permitted to live in Beijing. Guangzhou began trading with the Euro- peans in 1685. British ships began to arrive regularly from the East India Company bases on the Indian coast, and traders were allowed to establish 'factories' (offices and residences) near Guangzhou to export tea and silk. From the end of the 17th century the British and French were trading regu- larly at Guangzhou, followed by the Dutch, Danes, Swedes and Americans.

Hong Kong History - Culture and background country
Life forms existed more than 6,000 years ago at many sites along the winding shoreline of Hong Kong. It was believed that during the earliest prehistoric periods, from the close of the fourth millennium BC, Hong Kong experienced a change in the environment, in which the sea levels rose from as much as 100 meters below the present level. Ancient artifacts suggest a strong dependency on the sea. According to recent excavations, archaeologists have discovered two main Neolithic cultures lying in stratified sequence. Pieces of coarse, cord-marked pottery has been found together with fine, soft, fragile pottery decorated with linear carvings, perforations and paintings. The fourth millennium BC is associated with this phase. In the next phase, probably in the mid-third millennium BC, a new ceramic form decorated with a wide range of impressive geometric patterns was found. Better workmanship and a melange of different shapes indicate a progression in techniques. Ornaments, such as rings made from quartz and other stones, display exquisite craftsmanship.
