Dissertations: Geographical Location Although many of our students choose to write about issues and/or sports in England, we encourage them to write about the issues and sports they are interested in and familiar with. With our distance learning students coming from all over the world - and indeed, our campus based MA students - between them, they've managed to cover a pretty good geographical spread. Below, we've listed a selection to give you an idea of the kind of sports and issues written about in particular geographical/ cultural contexts.

But throughout history cities did not only become rich because of a favorable location, which was conducive to trade, the proximity to skilled labor and abundant resources, which facilitated industrialization and the exploitation of natural resource, and in the case of Rome through sheer military power. What were also required were a skilled administration, a well-established legal and commercial infrastructure, low taxes, and most of all religious tolerance and freedom, which attracted dynamic minority groups, and scientists, artists, teachers, philosopher and inventors. Conversely cities decayed because of internal and social strive, costly military campaigns in order to maintain their trading empires or other commercial interests, protectionism, their inability to adapt to changing economic conditions, and intolerance towards minority groups, which led merchant families or religious minorities to leave.

Occupied by the UK in 1841, Hong Kong was formally ceded by China the following year; various adjacent lands were added later in the 19th century. Pursuant to an agreement signed by China and the UK on 19 December 1984, Hong Kong became the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China on 1 July 1997. In this agreement, China has promised that, under its 'one country, two systems' formula, China's socialist economic system will not be imposed on Hong Kong and that Hong Kong will enjoy a high degree of autonomy in all matters except foreign and defense affairs for the next 50 years.

The Hong Kong harbor at night.
    Hong Kong
By Jan Morris It is the rise and fall of empires you are seeing here, the shifting of continents and the tides of power. Beyond the bustling ferry, beyond the teeming harbor, beyond the skyscrapers and the swivelling cranes, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China extends in ceaseless energy into the hills around, along the coast and over the waters of its archipelago. No other city is quite like this. Hong Kong is perpetually on the go, deafeningly energetic, smelling of oil and duck-mess, a city of many cultures poised between the present and the future, but seldom bothering with the past. There is, though, some element of pathos to the sensations of this astounding metropolis. It feels highly strung and nervous, not altogether sure of itself. It is hyperactive, like the world itself at the end of the 20th century. Discover the perfect Hong Kong vacation with National Geographic's online Trip Finder (powered by iExplore).

    Skyscrapers on Hong Kong Island
With its vibrant people, rich history, and dramatic setting of steel skyscrapers against soaring, green mountains, Hong Kong is one of the most spectacular cities in the world today. Through the tumultuous opium era (see History , below), a century of British rule, and the peaceful handover, Hong Kong has maintained a dynamism and energy that is unrivalled. It's a great city to visit and it's very "tourist friendly", almost by default. Not only is Hong Kong very compact, but the transportation systems are plentiful, easy to understand, and inexpensive. There are first-rate hotels, restaurants, and museums inside a bustling city life and tranquil, idyllic islands but a short ferry-hop away. Hong Kong is a unique city and one of our favorite!
