CULTURAL Monday, November 26, 2001 Online Edition 47 Garifuna projects based on mutual cooperation
By SUZANNE SHENDE Special to HTW(Last of two parts) TRUJILLO - The approach of the Comite de Emergencia Garifuna is not to simply donate: all the projects are designed so that the participants have to contribute back, and to foster cooperation, sustainable development and self-sufficiency. The people who lost houses, for instance, had to contribute an assistant and raw materials for the building of their house. Likewise, the participants in the agricultural program are not only on the receiving end: they too must give back to the program to make it perpetuate itself. When their plants are producing, each farmer must return a certain portion of the seeds they received, which will be redistributed to other farmers. Farmers and fishermen alike must give a part of their harvest, when there is abundance, back to the program. What is not donated to the sick or elderly can be used in another of the pioneering projects of the Comite, the children's breakfast program. According to an official in the province's educational office, the children's breakfast program run by the Comite in the Kindergarten America in Trujillo is the only free, complete daily meal program in the country. Whether or not it is one-of-a-kind, it has been a great success. In this public kindergarten, the Comite provides a hot, nutritious breakfast everyday. The Comite feeds the minds as well as the bodies of the children with regular workshops, ranging from hygiene and health issues to culture and land concerns.

It is Caribbean and it is inexpensive Caribbean. The island of Roatan, the most developed of the Bay Islands Archipelago, is located only 40 miles northeast of mainland Honduras. Lyle Burke and his family lived on Roatan, where he was inspired to start Tropical Pathways Tours, a tour company that brings wantabe expats to the prime destinations and provides expert advice. Secrets of a real-estate developer: “How I built a profitable Roatan resort on a shoestring budget” - Six years ago, Frank Canale started Sundancer, one of the most successful small scale real-estate developments on the island of Roatan. "For a number of years, I developed real estate in Arkansas and Colorado... retirement and golf communities mostly. But after my wife and I had children, I knew I wanted to bring them up in a more relaxed, more family-oriented place, and my wife and I wanted to try home schooling. We also wanted to go somewhere warm and I was looking for a place where I could make a living with a small real estate project. With these things in mind we began our search for a place to relocate".

OSU Forestry Home Page Honduras Land and Climate Honduras covers 43,278 square miles compared to Oklahoma at 68,679 square miles. Honduras borders El Salvador, Guatemala, and Belize in the east and then Nicaragua in the west. With the Caribbean Sea in the north and the Pacific Ocean to the south. In the eastern part of the country is covered by sub-tropic forest that can not be access by vehicle because of the lack of roads. All the road are on the West side of the country which contains the only recreational lake, finca las glorias, most of the population, national forest, and tourist sights. While Honduras is mountainous, it is the only Central American country that does not have volcanoes, but is 80% mountains and 20% valleys. Lack of volcanoes is a factor in its low food production. Soil in volcanic regions is usually rich and good for agriculture. Due to the poor soil, many people have practiced migrating agriculture, moving every few years to clear new land and plant crops. This and timber operations have caused Honduras to lose 30% of its forest over the last 25 years. Today, in the year 2000, there is a vase majority of the people who still use wood as a source of heat, energy, and fuel. This is alarming the government to develop Nation Parks and Reserves, and work with their people on other ways to preserve the forest. One way is charcoal, and building smaller wood burning stove. The climate varies according to elevation; subtropical in the low lands and temperate at higher levels. Tegucigalpa, the capital enjoys a relatively mild climate year round. The rainy season extends from May to November, although rain sometimes mat not begins to fall until late October. March through May are the hottest months.

Flag of Honduras Background:
Part of Spain's vast empire in the New World, Honduras became an independent nation in 1821. After two and one-half decades of mostly military rule, a freely elected civilian government came to power in 1982.
During the 1980s, Honduras proved a haven for anti-Sandinista contras fighting the Marxist Nicaraguan Government and an ally to Salvadoran Government forces fighting against leftist guerrillas. The country was devastated by Hurricane Mitch in 1998, which killed about 5,600 people and caused almost $1 billion in damage. Honduras: History and Culture Honduras is a beautiful country located in Central America and has Tegucigalpa as its capital city. Spanish is the principal language spoken and is spoken throughout the country. English is spoken with a broad Caribbean accent especially in the Bay Islands. Indian dialects are spoken by a great number of people as the population consists of 90% Mestizo and 7% Indian. The main industries in the Republic of Honduras are coffee, bananas, beef, sugar cane, tobacco and forestry. Other things that are a part of their culture are Honduran crafts include wood carvings with wooden instruments being the more dominant ones being made. Some of the other features of Honduran culture are exhibited in their textile arts, embroidery, basket making, ceramics and leather craft. The country's cuisine is like most places in the region that have a heavy Spanish influence and is therefore based around rice, beans, tortillas, meat, potatoes, fried bananas, cream and cheese.

    Honduras: Tourism in-wait...
Honduras tourism and culture are as "content-rich" as any country in Central America. But with little information on Honduras and its tourism in the news or on the net, Honduras and its tourism sector unfortunately remain under the radar for most North Americans. That's unfortunate - - Honduras and its tourism have lots to offer the traveler.
    Honduras tourism - Why Honduras?
Honduras and its growing eco-tourism sector have easily accessible, gorgeous national parks ; cloud forests; national reserves; and botanical gardens - - all with remarkable scenery.
Each park offers great birding , hiking, photography opportunities, water rafting near La Ceiba, kayaking or sightseeing. Planeta.com
