History and Rationale The Honduras Project was started in May of 1993 under the leadership of Dr. Patricia Brevard, a member of the dietetics faculty, and Dr. Marcia Ball, a member of the health education faculty. Their desire was to take students out of the traditional classroom and challenge them to apply their classroom knowledge and skill in an international field setting. The Spanish-speaking country of Honduras was chosen so students could gain exposure to a Hispanic culture, a people group which continues to grow rapidly in our country, and thus increase a student's marketability in the United States Travel to a developing nation expands the student's understanding of global issues. Students are purposely placed in situations that require them to learn to think independently and to be innovative with their health promotion skills. This program has been operating through the Department of Health Sciences since 1993. To date, almost 100 students have participated in this program.

Honduras - Culture Overview
The area that is now Honduras was an important center of Mayan civilization during the classic period before A.D. 900. Subsequently, the area was settled by Spaniards but remained on the fringes of the Spanish Empire. Even today Honduras is a nation of sparse population and rugged terrain. People living in small villages have had little contact with others, while ideas about shared traditions have been more important and common to the cities. Yet recent political conflicts in Central America have helped to encourage a sense of Honduran nationalism, and diverse ethnic groups are struggling to find a place for themselves in the nation.
These ethnic groups include the Chorti, descendants of the classic Mayans; the Lenca, the largest cultural group, settled mostly in the west; the Tolupanes, Tawahka, Pech and Miskito inhabitants of the tropical forests of the eastern lowlands; the Garifuna of the Atlantic coast, descendants of African and Carib peoples; and the mestizo descendants of Europeans. Nearly all of these people consider themselves Roman Catholic and speak the country's official language, Spanish, but some groups preserve vestiges of older ways, and there are important differences between them.
Outside the cities the audience for national culture is dispersed, but Hondurans admire artists who represent local subjects. People take special pride in Carlos Garay, who painted Honduran landscapes after graduating from the National School of Fine Arts. Although there are many painters who have received training in Europe, such self-taught artists as Jose Antonio Velazquez are more popular locally. Velazquez focused on paintings of village life in a way that is representational without being photographic. Though Velazquez died in 1983, his son and others carry on in his tradition. The Honduran writers who are best known are those who work in more than one medium. Thus, Rafael Heliodoro Valles, a historian, poet, and essayist, along with Clementina Suarez, a poet, publisher, and magazine editor, have become familiar figures to a wide range of Hondurans.

One of the greatest bars comes to Honduras from Nicaragua, attracting crowds like no bar has ever done before. The first Hipa Hipa was born in Managua, Nicaragua six years ago, and is owned and managed by two Costa Rican fellows who know what the business was about. Later, they found out Hondurans were party people as well and decided to bring that joy to our country. Hipa Hipa, a beach bar, located in Boulevard Morazan in Tegucigalpa came to Honduras offering products of the best quality, amazing prices, great music, and the most incredible environment ever, approximately two years ago. The name Hipa Hipa comes from the Hawaiian word meaning cheers. In fact, the whole location has this style; palms and bamboo, wooden bars and chairs, everything has a tropical mood.

http://www.mostlymaya.com/
Mostly Maya; An Exploration of Travel Among the Maya Mostly Maya is dedicated to understanding the culture and archaeology of the Maya. It is also geared to making budget and other travel in the Maya areas and in the ruins in Mesoamerica simpler to arrange. I look for links which are relevant to planning an inexpensive trip via the Internet, but this is best done using the additional advice of a good guide book, such as Lonely Planet or the Rough Guide. I also look for better ways to get to some of the more obscure locations. The site is a hobby and it takes no ads. I note mostly local sources, with a preference for inexpensive hotels, local day trips and other local services. I believe that it is better to deal directly with locally owned businesses where possible, because they are more likely to keep both income and profits within the local economies. I also plug places or services I like while traveling in Maya areas. You will also find pages occasionally add pages for commercial and non-commercial places that I like while traveling, which have no website. See additional information For those of you who were wondering where this website was on the 13th of April, my $18 per year web host forgot that I had renewed last January! There have probably been other times and reasons, but be tolerant. Mostly Maya will be here as long as I am and even longer.

A Practical Guide to Santa Rosa de Copan, Honduras
by Warren Post
August 1998 Nestled in the mountains of western Honduras, Santa Rosa de Copan offers an agreeable change from tourist traps and scorching cities. Its cool mountain climate, fine colonial architecture with narrow cobbled streets, and a reputation for friendliness combine to make Santa Rosa de Copan one of the region's most pleasant places to visit. Off the gringo trail, Santa Rosa isn't overrun with travelers. And its strategic location makes Santa Rosa a good base for day trips to the surrounding area.
THINGS TO SEE AND DO in COPAN
Santa Rosa is noted for the excellent hand rolled cigars produced by Flor deCopan, makers of the famous Zino line. The factory, located two blocks west ofthe central plaza (open 8am - 5pm Monday-Friday, 8 - 11 am Saturday) allows visitors to enter and view the process. An interpretative tour in English or Spanish is available; inquire at Pizza Pizza. Just as Santa Rosa is famous abroad for its cigars, it is known among Hondurans as a center of cultural activity. The Casa de la Cultura (1/2 block south of thecentral plaza) offers frequent exhibitions, performances, readings, and concerts. Be sure to ask about upcoming events. Coffee lovers will want to visit Beneficio Maya, where fine coffee is graded and roasted for export. Aside from being able to view the process, visitors can buy fresh export grade coffee. Take a taxi to the beneficio (US$0.50/person), as it's a little hard to find.

The ruins at Copán in western Honduras indicate that the area was the centre of Mayan civilization before the Maya migrated to the Yucatán Peninsula. Most of the American Indians are Lenca and are now found in the southwest, near the Guatemala border, close to the most important Indian centres of the pre-Columbian period. Small, isolated groups of non-Spanish-speaking Indians—such as the Jicaque, Miskito (Mosquito), and Paya—continue to live in the northeast, although their numbers are declining. Of the total population, about nine-tenths is mestizo (a mixture of Spanish and Indian). Blacks of West Indian origin and Garifuna (Black Caribs) make up a significant part of the population along the Caribbean coast, an area where English is widely spoken.

http://www.americatravelling.net/honduras/tegucigalpa/tegucigalpa_culture.htm
Tegucigalpa - Culture Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, got its tongue twisting name from the ancient Nahuatl language, and translated means "silver mountain" In effect, Tegucigalpa came to being during colonial times as a mining center. "Tegus" as its inhabitants affectionately call it, is a mix of an old colonial city that has turned into the modern capital of Honduras. As a matter of fact, Tegucigalpa became the most important mining center in Central America during colonial times. Tegucigalpa's entry to the list of country capitals came to be by chance. It is said that the society of Comayagua, the long time colonial capital of Honduras, publicly disliked the wife of president Marco Aurelio Soto, who took revenge by moving the capital of the republic to Tegucigalpa. A city with very pleasant climate, Tegucigalpa is nestled in a valley at about 3000 ft making its climate ideal. A gateway into Pacific coast, as well as to the numerous attractions that are located in central and southern Honduras. Getting around Tegucigalpa can be a confusing experience. Despite the colonial history of the city, it does not have the typical layout of square streets around the central park. This is mostly due to the fact that terrain around the city did not allow this. Originally, two separate cities, Tegucigalpa and Comayaguela have grown into one big city. The Choluteca river is still the official boundary between the sister cities, and Tegucigalpa is by far the better of the two. The majority of colonial buildings and higher end neighborhoods being located within its boundaries. Today, both cities have been officially joined, sharing the same city mayor, etc.
