The rating system, developed by the National Center for Educational Accountability, considers many more factors into accountability than just TAAS scores. To receive a five star rating, at least 15% of the school's students must participate in Advanced Placement courses, or 70% of the students were taking the SAT/ACT college entrance tests. If one of these two criteria were not met, the rating would be bumped down to 4 stars. Other factors that determined the number of stars included: TAAS proficiency, individual student performance for 3 years, and comparison measures with other schools. For more information, visit

READING RECOVERY RATIONALE At St Francis of Assisi we offer a Reading Recovery program that is an early intervention program for children who are having trouble learning to read after one year of instruction. AIM The Reading Recovery program is designed to accelerate children’s learning in the area of reading and writing. IMPLEMENTATION The classroom Literacy program is supplemented with daily one-to-one lessons of 30 minutes. The program runs for 12 to 20 weeks with a specifically trained teacher. A tentative selection list of “at risk” Prep children is compiled by classroom teachers, reading recovery teachers and the early years co-ordinator. After administering the Observation Testing Survey children in grade one with the lowest text level are selected to begin the program. THE PROGRAM CONSISTS OF
  • reading familiar texts re-reading new text working with letter/words writing a story assembling a cut up story reading a new book that will be read independently the next day
PARENT LIAISON Parents are contacted by the Reading Recovery teacher to explain the role of the parents in this program. Daily attendance is essential, as is completion of homework that is assigned by the Reading Recovery teacher.
