Home Page
Harlow Jikishin Ju Jitsu Club has been established for over 20 years and has an excellent reputation for the high quality of the students who train there. The club has produced a number of Dan Grades over the years, most of whom continue to train regularly. The club has a very open attitude toward training, with self defence techniques playing a major part in the training scheme. Much attention is paid to the correct application of techniques, and to the various ways that each technique might be applied to different attacks. Many of the techniques are simple, but nevertheless highly effective, and are based upon utilising the way the human body works. This effectively gives the student an advantage, even where the attacker is physically bigger and stronger. Kicks and punches are broken down and analysed to ensure clean, consistent strikes with maximum effect. Special attention is given to the areas of the body where such strikes will be most effective. Throws, locks, chokes, strangles, pressure and nerve point attacks, as well as ground fighting are taught and practiced within a safe, controlled training environment. Although competitions are held on a regular basis, there is no pressure on students to compete. The Harlow club has a good competition record with medal wins in local, national and international competition.

  • Chairman's Summary on the Ad Hoc Committee on Depleted Uranium - 23 November 2001 In January 2001, news media in many parts of the world carried reports that postulated links between NATO's use of Depleted Uranium ammunition in Kosovo and Bosnia with allegedly higher incidences of leukemia, other cancers, and other negative health effects said to be occuring among NATO troops who had served in those areas and among local civilian populations. Although a very large body of existing scientific and medical research clearly established that such a link between Depleted Uranium ammunition and the reported illnesses was extremely unlikely, NATO Secretary General George Robertson immediately established an Ad Hoc Committee on Depleted Uranium to serve as a clearing house for information to be shared among interested nations. To date, the scientific and medical research continues to disprove any link between Depleted Uranium and the reported negative health effects. Furthermore, the present evidence strongly suggests that NATO troops serving in the Balkans are not suffering negative health effects different from those suffered by their colleagues who have not served in the Balkans. Nevertheless, NATO is not complacent about this matter, and will continue to share information about this issue. The following web pages, which contain a large volume of material on this subject, represent part of NATO's effort in this regard.

Established by the National Cooperative Business Association , the Cooperative Hall of Fame honors those distinguished individuals whose contributions to cooperative business have been genuinely heroic. Inductees are limited to a prestigious group carefully selected to preserve the nature of this special recognition. Each year a select few men and women are honored because of their genuinely heroic contributions to the enhancement of cooperative enterprise and to the advancement of the principles of cooperation. The Cooperative Development Foundation administers the Cooperative Hall of Fame. Nominations are received annually and reviewed by two committees, each composed of current leaders from the various sectors of the U.S. cooperative movement. The Cooperative Hall of Fame is also a major fundraiser for CDF. It is fitting that the occasion to bestow the highest honor of the co-op community on those individuals who have selflessly given of their lives to promote cooperatives, is also a vehicle to raise funds to perpetuate their work and life-long commitment.

    Paradise Lost
    Act 1, Scene 1
Looking back I could not have known how lucky I was to be raised in a small Oregon town. We had horses, land, beautiful green trees, big clean rivers, wheat fields, orchards, foxes, deer, good neighbors, and not too many people. All anyone could want really. As I child I also could not know what the first housing developments meant.
    Act 1, Scene 2
Eventually I ended up working in Silicon Valley. I had not gone home in many years.
    Act 2, Scene 1
There's a feeling like no other. To go home and find the fields where we once rode horses covered lot to lot with executive homes. To go home and find the artesian well we once drank from on hot days covered, covered so yet another useless green lawn won't flood. To go home and find the cherry tree and blackberries we so loved raped by a bulldozer. To go home and find the heart of a little town now just another suburb whore. Yes, a feeling like no other...
