How to find a good energy-efficient ceiling fan
By Michele Dawson As the mercury starts to rise, so too does the urge to flip on the air conditioner. For those days when it's warm, but not quite hot enough to turn on the air conditioner, a ceiling fan is a great option if you buy a good one that is energy-efficient. In the last 10 years ceiling fans have become more technologically advanced, providing cooling in the summer months and warming in the winter months and ultimately helping you save on your energy bill. Ceiling fans don't actually reduce the temperature, but during warm weather, they have a wind-chill effect. So if it's 85 degrees in your family room and you have a ceiling fan purring above, it will feel like 78 degrees. And in the winter, fans recirculate the heat to the living areas.

Sustainable Energy Technology Assessment Being Conducted By ARISE
ARISE is currently focusing on finding out just how many sustainable energy technologies Watauga County already has before beginning to count new ones. In order to do this, a survey form has been developed to help catalog everything found in the county. This information will be used solely to establish what is already here. All information will be considered completely confidential and will not be shared with anyone. One of the goals of this project is to create a map of the county showing where different technologies are more abundant.
If you or anyone you know has any of these technologies, please contact Scott Suddreth, Chair of ARISE, 828-264-6026 or email grateful@boone.net

Cut Summer Energy Costs Up to 15 Percent with Sun Control Window Film
(ARA) - During the summer, heat invades homes. In 2001, energy costs have unmercifully doubled in many communities from a year ago. Many homeowners do not understand that up to 15 percent of their average summer utility bill is due to heat pouring through windows. This heat gain puts such a load on air conditioners that they keep running. Electric meters keep spinning. As energy rates soar, everyone needs an affordable way to beat the heat. The Biggest Problem in the Home is the Window The best place to start cutting home energy costs is at the window. According to a Phoenix Tribune article, "Consumers Can Cut Utility Bills," Jack Haenichen, senior technical adviser for the Arizona commerce department's energy office, asserts that "40 percent of a house's heat is a result of its window space and approximately 50 percent of a utility bill can be attributed to them." For people out West, sun coming in means a lot of cash going out. The Best Solution is Sun Control Window Film James Dulley, author of The Sensible Home, says "Window film is your best solution to block heat and fading, especially if you are on a limited budget. The new summer/winter films save energy year-round." In his "Utility Bill Updates," Dulley recommends metallized polyester films that reflect summer heat outside and help retain radiant heating in winter, much the same way high-tech insulated windows do, at a fraction of the cost.

Remodeling Projects: Which Ones Build Your Home Equity Most?
Talking About Money
With Jim Larranaga (ARA) - Can't bear another day with pea green countertops? Does your rust-colored carpet make you cringe? If your home's interior looks like the set of "Three's Company," or if you're just ready for a change, now may be the perfect time to renovate. The right remodeling project can enhance the livability and value of your home, but which ones will give you the most bang for your buck? The Eyes of the Beholder Although your personal tastes should factor into the project you choose, you also may also want to take into account what a possible buyer might like. Don't worry, mind-reading isn't necessary. According to Remodeling Online's 2000-2001 Cost vs. Value Report, kitchen and bath remodels, along with second-story, bathroom and family room additions, recoup most of your costs when a home is sold. Other improvements you might consider include:
  • Energy efficiency - With energy bills going sky-high, a new furnace that updates your home's energy efficiency can lower your energy bills, as well as appeal to buyers. Consider a new heating and cooling system, new windows or added insulation.

If you're selling your home, you want to make visible improvements that offer immediate payback. But if you're staying in your home, it makes more sense to increase your comfort and cut your living costs.
You may first want to make cosmetic improvements that turn your house into a "home." Then move on to larger "invisible" improvements - such as insulation and a new heating system - that will save you money now and over time. If you do eventually sell, it could be that a cost-effective home is just what catches a buyer's eye.
ENERGY-SAVING IMPROVEMENTS
One of the best ways to reduce your house costs is to make improvements that increase your home's energy efficiency. Air leaks, inadequate insulation, or inefficient appliances may be costing you more than you know in high utility bills.
According to the government's Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Network (EREN), the first step towards an energy-efficient home is to conduct an energy audit to find out where your house is losing energy. Then consider improving your home with:

My husband - foreseeing an evening of pushing heavy furniture around - rolled his eyes and said "What we NEED is to make it bigger. It's too small. That's why I'm going to move it out six feet when we put on the second floor next year."
Wait a minute, I thought, "How did we get from rearranging the living room to tearing down walls and laying a new foundation?"
The truth is, home improvement does not have to involve tools, sawdust and lots of dollars. It can be as simple as rearranging what you already have to give the entire room a whole new look. Want proof? Just check out the story on pages 16 and 17 and see for yourself.
We recently held a contest asking local homeowners to tell us why they wanted a room in their house to be professionally arranged by JoAnne Lenart-Weary, owner of One Day Decorating, a local decorating service here in Erie. We received many entries and chose Dawn Major as the winner. You can read her winning essay and see the "before" and "after" pictures of her redecorated room on pages 16 and 17. We've also asked JoAnne to give us some tips that you can use to improve YOUR home without spending a dime.
The money-saving articles don't stop there. With today's sagging economy - we can all stand to save a few bucks. That's why the Erie Times-News has packed this special section with money-saving home improvement articles like "Energy Saving Ideas" on page 5 and "A New Kitchen On A Budget"

An authority on home energy savings has some troubling numbers for homeowners who think all there is to energy savings is enough attic insulation.
By DAVID BRADLEY
For AP Weekly Features
Matt Lamb says the energy savings in an average home could easily improve 15 per cent to 25 per cent. Lamb, says, "It wouldn't take a lot of sweat equity on the part of the homeowner to get those savings." While icy blasts of winter are largely past, memories of staggering energy bills are warm in the minds of many homeowners. Lamb, a manufacturing vice president for Pacesetter Corporation, an affiliate of The Home Service Store, suggests now is the time to go on the offensive to correct energy deficiencies. The trouble is homeowners tend to overlook subtle sources of energy loss that, in total, amount to big-time energy inefficiency.
