I am interested in understanding the process by which groups of individuals may learn to form forecasts and choose actions consistent with theoretical concepts of equilibrium behavior in dynamic macroeconomic environments and in repeated games. I have attempted to understand this learning process in a number of ways, using theoretical models, computational methods and controlled laboratory experiments with paid human subjects. February 1, 2004 REGINA H. BOONE/DFP Margaret Johnson Piper, 98, Southfield Occupation: Retired schoolteacher Family: Widowed; three sons (one deceased), eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren Margaret Johnson Piper grew up near Canfield on Detroit's east side. She recalls the neighborhood was well integrated then, with blacks, whites, Christians and Jews living in the same community. "I had both black and white playmates and I went to school with both black and white," she says of her early childhood. WORDS OF WISDOM

  • MARY MCCLENDON: Household worker campaigned for rights Her father, a native of Canada, owned a harness business near downtown Detroit, taking care of horses for the city's Police Department. He also owned a home in Belle River, Ontario, and she spent most of her summers there as a child. It wasn't until she started seventh grade at Irving, on Detroit's west side, that she remembers first feeling unwelcome because of race. "I don't recall any specific incident, but there was just a lot of talk, mostly child's talk, saying that you didn't mix," Piper says. "There were only about three or four of us in the whole school so that was sufficient enough to let you know you weren't wanted."

    ECONOMICS
The National Council for the Social Studies identifies 10 themes in social studies. The one that relates to Geography (III) is called "People, Places and Environment." The guide further provides eleven "Performance Expectations" in this area and gives three examples of how a lesson might be constructed to achieve some of these objectives.
In one example, a teacher reads an account of the monsoon from the perspective of the people of India. Although elsewhere in the guide, social studies teachers are encouraged to take a less directive and active role in instruction, here the teacher uses direct instruction.
Would it be more interesting to the students to contact another student in India during the monsoon season and obtain a variety of reactions/description of the impact on the people from an Indian viewpoint? Would it be more meaningful, challenging? Would the results be more likely to be "integrated" and would the student be more likely to feel he/she is an active participant in the educational process?

TEACHING THE SOCIAL ECONOMICS WAY OF THINKING: SELECTED PAPERS FROM THE NINTH WORLD CONGRESS OF SOCIAL ECONOMICS
    INTRODUCTION
Teaching the Social Economics Way of Thinking is unique in that it is the first time a large number of papers on this subject has been published as a collection. Our working premise in calling for papers on this theme has been that social economics makes a real and substantial difference in how economic affairs are understood and how economics is taught. Our approach has been direct and simple: we asked social economists who have been teaching for some time what they do which in effect sets off their teaching from the teaching of others who adhere to the conventional paradigm of contemporary economics. Our collection is organized around and presented in eight major sections in the following order:
    • premises employed in economics the masters on the social economics way of thinking diagnostic tools employed in economics teaching methods teaching standard courses from a social economics perspective teaching economics and ethics team teaching economics and theology/religion evolution of courses taught from a social economics viewpoint
With one exception each section contains at least two essays. The section on teaching standard courses from a social economics perspective covers the following courses: development economics, environmental economics, health economics, industrial organization, international economics, labor economics, money and banking, and principles. This section accounts for 18 of the 34 essays in the collection.

Is Transition Possible or Can Socialist Professors of Economics Teach Capitalism?
Lest you hold your breath to the end of this article - the answers to both questions in the title are no and no. Capitalism cannot be "learned" or "imported" or "emulated" or "simulated". Capitalism (or, rather, liberalism) is not only a theoretical construct. It is not only a body of knowledge. It is a philosophy, an ideology, a way of life, a mentality and a personality.
By Sam Vaknin, 10/31/2002 Lest you hold your breath to the end of this article - the answers to both questions in the title are no and no. Capitalism cannot be "learned" or "imported" or "emulated" or "simulated". Capitalism (or, rather, liberalism) is not only a theoretical construct. It is not only a body of knowledge. It is a philosophy, an ideology, a way of life, a mentality and a personality.
This is why professors of economics who studied under Socialism can never teach Capitalism in the truest sense of the word. No matter how intelligent and knowledgeable (and a minority of them are) - they can never convey the experience, the practice, the instincts and reflexes, the emotional hues and intellectual pugilistics that real, full scale, full blooded Capitalism entails. They are intellectually and emotionally castrated by their socialist past of close complicity with inefficiency, corruption and pathological economic thinking.
