DELANEY, BESSIE and SADIE
(Sadie: 1889 and counting, Bessie: 1891-1995) home economics (Sadie) and Dentist (Bessie) They are two sisters; Sadie became a home economics teacher and Bessie became a dentist in the early 20th century Harlem, New York City. The value of home economics is much more easily understood in the context of the early part of this century than it apparently is now. Many people suffered from diseases which were results from vitamin shortages. Scurvy and Rickets are perhaps some of the better known. Home economics strived to teach people the basics of proper nutrition along with other household systems designed to improve peoples lives. Both are graduates of Columbia University and both sisters continued to be active into their 100's. Bessie died in her sleep on September 25, 1995. Their oral history was recorded into the book "Having Our Say" and has now be adapted into a play which was produced on Broadway. The Delaney family produced many remarkable people. It is especially important for elementary credential candidates and others to be aware of the impact of any regulatory and/or statutory revisions to these requirements. Updates on these issues will be posted to the State Board of Education and Commission websites when available. Demonstrating content knowledge in a subject area is one of the statutory requirements for the California Single Subject Teaching Credential. California law provides two options for meeting this subject matter competence requirement: a) completion of a Commission-approved program of course work in the subject area, or b) passage of the Commission-approved content area examination. The examinations used contain both multiple-choice and constructed response components. The single subject area examinations are also an option for satisfying the subject matter requirement for the Education Specialist Instruction Credential.

(formerly Home Economics Education) A UW graduate teaches home economics at Wisconsin High School, c. 1925 With their inclusion of courses on the teaching of home economics in the earliest curriculum, Caroline Hunt and Abby Marlatt Ruth Henderson teaching home economics at Wisconsin High School, c. 1949 Teacher training remained a popular track for home economics students. In fact, the first home economics Ph.D. was in the area of home economics education: Julia Frank Nofsker in 1932 for her thesis A Study of Home Economics Education in the Public High Schools of Wisconsin . This pedagogic focus and the large number of students studying to become teachers did not, however, lead quickly to the creation of a Home Economics Education Department. Rather, students combined their home economics courses with selected courses in the School of Education. The principal faculty member in the area from the 1920s through the 1950s was Ruth Henderson , who held a joint position in the Department of Home Economics and the School of Education, as well as at Wisconsin High School. Many of the home economics education students did their student teaching at Wisconsin High under her supervision.

I first “met” Leanne Ely in 1998 when I ordered her self-published book, The Manic Housewife Cooks: A Cook-Let Booklet to Get You Started. It had some of the best recipes, which I still use today - especially the chicken divan which is my standard for when I make a meal for someone at church. Yum! Next, I subscribed to her menu-mailer, a unique menu service provided for a small fee. She send you a complete week of menus with a shopping list all made up. It was so easy to use! And the recipes were great! See www.menumailer.net. She also has an ezine called “Healthy Foods” which you can subscribe to by sending an email to join-healthy-foods@ds.xc.org. It is packed with great articles and recipes - and it’s free. The whole food thing is often a challenge for homeschooling moms. It’s time consuming and confusing. Cooking and planning can often seem overwhelming, so we give in and eat a less than healthy diet. Leanne can truly help you get out of your dietary ruts! She is a certified nutritional counselor and has been referred to as “the Erma Bombeck” of cooking. I was thrilled to be able to take a look at her latest titles.

We have integrated Excel into a Principles of Economics course (microeconomic emphasis) and an International Economics course. The second set of references is to published papers that relate predominantly to the materials developed for these courses. Finally, a set of work in progress is available for use in developing materials for (mostly microeconomics) courses.

We have used Excel workbooks and ancillary material in Principles of Economics II (microeconomics) and in International Economics. In each case, the approach is to write a Study Guide for each chapter. The Study Guide provides a set of instructions, directing the user to open a specific workbook and to conduct and report the results of specific exercises. We often use the workbooks in class to illustrate the relevant principles.
