I first “met” Leanne Ely in 1998 when I ordered her self-published book, The Manic Housewife Cooks: A Cook-Let Booklet to Get You Started. It had some of the best recipes, which I still use today - especially the chicken divan which is my standard for when I make a meal for someone at church. Yum! Next, I subscribed to her menu-mailer, a unique menu service provided for a small fee. She send you a complete week of menus with a shopping list all made up. It was so easy to use! And the recipes were great! See www.menumailer.net. She also has an ezine called “Healthy Foods” which you can subscribe to by sending an email to join-healthy-foods@ds.xc.org. It is packed with great articles and recipes - and it’s free. The whole food thing is often a challenge for homeschooling moms. It’s time consuming and confusing. Cooking and planning can often seem overwhelming, so we give in and eat a less than healthy diet. Leanne can truly help you get out of your dietary ruts! She is a certified nutritional counselor and has been referred to as “the Erma Bombeck” of cooking. I was thrilled to be able to take a look at her latest titles.

See also: About the HEARTH Project Credits What is Home Economics? Other forerunners of home economics were the cooking schools that began coming into being in the 1870s. Women such as Maria Parloa and Fannie Farmer, both of whom taught at the famous Boston Cooking School, offered instruction in preparing healthful, low-cost meals. At first they provided training mainly for professional cooks, but over time they opened up their classes to an eager general public. Teachers during this period also published some of the first cookbooks directed at a large popular audience. Ellen Richards (1842-1911) was one of the major figures in the emergence of home economics as a profession. As a young woman who had grown up in modest circumstances in a small town in Massachusetts, she defied convention by leaving home to attend the newly founded Vassar College, from which she received a bachelor's and later a master's degree. She went on to be the first, and for many years the only, woman to earn a degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After graduating, she taught at M.I.T. as an instructor of sanitary education. She was also active in public health and social reform efforts in the Boston area. Throughout her career, she emphasized the influence of environment on health and well-being. Beginning in 1899, Richards, along with Melvil Dewey and other educators and activists, organized a series of annual gatherings that became known as the Lake Placid Conferences, because the first of these, and several of the later ones, was held at Lake Placid, New York. Out of these conferences, a movement took shape that slowly defined itself and began pursuing specific goals. At the first conference, participants agreed on the term "home economics," which was held to be sufficiently broad to cover a wide range of concerns, and they began energetic and successful efforts to promote the teaching of home economics in secondary schools and in colleges and universities. (Attentive readers will notice that the conference proceedings, which are available through this web site, use unfamiliar spelling-a product of Dewey's spelling reform efforts.)

Welcome to the BYU Economics Department
The Department of Economics at Brigham Young University focuses on providing a first-class undergraduate education in the discipline of economics. The core courses are taught using a calculus-based approach. Many of our students pursue graduate work in Business, Law, Medicine, and Economics.
The Discipline
Economics examines how societies choose to allocate scarce resources among competing uses. A broad range of contemporary policy issues are studied in fields such as: food, agriculture, and natural resource economics; economic development and growth, international trade and finance, economic history, the organization of industries, the development and efficiency of law, business cycles, labor markets, and public and private finance.
Career Opportunities Professional economists basically work in three fields. Some work in business, others in government, and some choose academic careers. The lifestyles of these groups vary greatly, making the decision of which career to adopt an important one.

Mission Statement:
The mission of the Home Economics Careers and Technology Unit is to provide high quality leadership and assistance to California high schools in order to improve student performance and to prepare students to be positive, productive members of families, the work force, and the global community.
The reality of California's competitive job market is that employees must have the education and training employers require. Home Economics Related Occupations (HERO) programs teach students solid employment skills to get - and succeed in - jobs in some of the state's fastest growing industries.
Specialized training in " career pathways " allows students to explore and pursue careers options in eight different areas.
The depth and variety of the program's curriculum allows students to then secure entry-level jobs immediately after graduation, pursue advanced training or higher education for technical and professional positions, or "transfer" skills to a variety of careers. Many home economics careers and technology graduates apply their education and knowledge as they move up the career ladder to become managers, employers, and entrepreneurs.
The real strength of California's home economics careers and technology programs is that they not only provide students with the background to get jobs , they also teach students how to be good employees: employees who understand how their industries works; employees who appreciate the relationship between themselves and their employers; employees who successfully balance their home and work lives.

"IN AMERICA, WE have a two-party system," a Republican congressional staffer is supposed to have told a visiting group of Russian legislators some years ago. "There is the stupid party. And there is the evil party. I am proud to be a member of the stupid party." He added: "Periodically, the two parties get together and do something that is both stupid and evil. This is called-bipartisanship."
