Set in the framework of a six lesson study of the Animal Kingdom, we will use many online resources to study ten animals, learning about habitat, diet, classification, behavior and more. I have set the class up as if you were a child taking the class, so that you can get a feel for the flow of the lessons. Parents may take this course online with their children, however, children under 13 are not permitted to enroll or participate in this class alone. Children can only take this online course with an adult. Students will enjoy the teaching technique, but this course should serve to educate the parents, educators, and homeschoolers about how the internet can be an effective teaching tool.

How a Home Economics Teacher Became President of Her Own Company
By LaVera Leonard, Ed. D. I have been teaching for as long as I can remember. When my parents opened a day camp, I was a counselor, and taught every age group everything from swimming, horseback riding, arts and crafts and more. Seeing young people achieve reinforced my desire to teach. Later in life, for six enjoyable years I taught home economics. Today, however, I am the president of a public affairs firm in the competitive DC metropolitan area, The Leonard Resource Group (LRG). Not surprisingly, a major focus for LRG is education and workforce development issues that affect people's lives. As a company, we strive to make a positive difference. My staff, our clients, and especially the young people who I know are helped through the Job Corps programour largest clientthey are the essence of what drives me. Our motto is "Creativity, Tenacity, and Results." It All Began with Morning Munchies
How did I end up with a public affairs firm? It began when I was hired to teach home economics at Gauger Middle School in Delaware. While home economics included child development, nutrition, family living, consumer education, and clothing and textiles, the common perception was "she teaches stitching and stirring." So I worked diligently within the school district and with the state legislature to secure additional funds to demonstrate what home economics could really do for young people. I opened a pre-school within our middle school and started a cooperative education program for my students to get real work experience in area restaurants. We even opened a "healthy" breakfast operation for all the teachers, which we called "Morning Munchies"my first business!

Listed below are key pieces of enabling legislation at the federal level that began to emerge which shaped our mission: In 1862 the Morrill Act provided for at least one college in each state to be established where "the leading object shall be, without excluding other scientific or classical studies, to teach such branches as are related to agriculture and the mechanic arts".
In 1887 the Hatch Act allowed for the establishment of Agricultural Experiment Stations at one Land Grant College in each state. This is important because this act established agricultural research as a recognized function of the Land Grant University.
