Women take the ice More women are joining organized ice hockey teams by Heather Bowes Fifteen-year-old Emily May of Pottstown, Penn., lives immersed in hockey. Her first word was "hockey," and in the ninth grade, she had a chance to try her hand at the game.
"I didn't start until then because women's hockey was not available to me prior to that stage in my life," May said.
Like May, more females are jumping at the chance to play a sport once reserved for men. In the 1990-91 season 5,573 female hockey players registered with the USA Hockey Organization. That number has now increased four-fold to 27,000 females. As a result of this boom, more colleges are making women's ice hockey a varsity sport.
Harvard University women's ice hockey coach Katey Stone has experienced firsthand the growth in women's hockey.
Tagging along with her two older brothers, Stone began her hockey career at age 3. She didn't play on an all-girls team until she went to high school in 1981. At the Taft School in Watertown, Conn., Stone's hockey team competed against only 10 other teams.
After high school, Stone joined the University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team. When she entered college, 15 teams in the National Collegiate Athletic Association existed, spread over three divisions.

Zirnis grabs top CHA pre-season honor
Jamie Gilliam, UAH Sports Information
After leading the Chargers in scoring with 15 goals as a sophomore, Karlis Zirnis was named Pre-Season Co-Player of the Year for College Hockey America on Wednesday, landing the Latvian a place on the Pre-Season All-CHA Team. Joining Zirnis on the preseason squad was fellow junior Tyler Butler, who led all returning Charger defensemen in scoring last season with 13 points. Senior Brian Gornick of Air Force shared the Player of the Year with Zirnis. Along with selecting the preseason squad, the CHA coaches also cast their predictions on how the teams would end up at the end of the season. Defending CHA tournament champion Wayne State led the poll with 23 points and four first place-votes, while the defending regular season champion Chargers slid into the runner-up slot with 21 points and two first-place votes. The Purple Eagles of Niagara were predicted to finish third, followed by Bemidji State, Findlay and Air Force in order.
