"I feel very fortunate to be able to be here today, to be able to walk in here," the 25-year-old Moore said before Colorado played Los Angeles. "I don't know whether I'll be able to play again, but I remain optimistic. I'm more fortunate just to be alive and to take one day at a time." Moore waved to the crowd from one of the luxury boxes in the first period after he was welcomed back by the public address announcer. The fans gave him a standing ovation that lasted more than a minute and players from both teams tapped their sticks on the ice. Moore sustained two broken vertebrae, a concussion and cuts on his face when Bertuzzi punched him from behind and drove his head into the ice. The hit was believed to be retaliation for a check by Moore in February that knocked Canucks star Markus Nasland search ) out for three games.

Sometimes, what's missing can tell you a lot about somebody. "If you walk down the street and smile, and people see missing teeth, they assume you're a hockey player," Stars defenseman Richard Matvichuk said. "It's part of the image. You've got cracked teeth or broken noses." More Stars Hockey is one of the few sports in which team dentists routinely work home games. Pucks, sticks and punches make the mouth susceptible to damage. Some players consider it part of the job and are proud to show their missing teeth. Others don't want any part of dentures and dentists. Here are some of the Stars' stories: A GAP IN ERSKINE'S CAREER Stars defenseman John Erskine's front teeth didn't last long in his hockey career. At his first junior training camp, Erskine dropped the gloves and was punched hard enough in the mouth that the teeth hit the ice. The dentist attempted to save the teeth but was unsuccessful.

The Charge Old time hockey can be violent, profane, and darned funny! Opening Statement An absolutely classic sports film, and one of a few to cover hockey, Slap Shot will please just about any sports fan with its humorous, sometimes serious, but dead-on take of minor league hockey and the towns that support it. Thanks to Universal, you may not realize this movie is over 20 years old! The Evidence I have to confess up front that hockey is one of my favorite sports to watch as a fan, and last year I had many an enjoyable night at rink-side watching the local minor-league hockey team go at it. By no means is this a prerequisite to enjoying the movie, but if you have any association with hockey, whether as a player or a fan, I think you will have an even better time appreciating this flick. Slap Shot is the story of the Charlestown Chiefs, a low-rent minor league hockey team that is struggling both in the standings and at the box office, due in part to the financial woes of the local plant, which is itself in danger of closing. As if the astounding fashions on display aren't enough of a clue, this story clearly takes place in the early 1970s when the Rust Belt was beginning to get hit by hard times.

November 3, 1998 Charlottesville, VA Cavalier senior All-American Michelle Vizzuso (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) was named the ACC Player of the Week for the second time this season after helping Virginia win a pair of games last week. Against Radford, Vizzuso tallied one goal and added a goal and an assist against #13 Duke. Vizzuso's goal against Radford was the game-winner and her assist in the Duke game was also the game-winning assist. A member of the United States national field hockey team, Vizzuso is the Virginia career leader in assists with 58, which ranks her second all-time in the ACC and 12th nationally. She needs two goals to become only the second person in ACC history to have 50 goals and 50 assists in a career. She holds third place all-time on the Virginia career scoring chart with 154 points and ranks ninth all-time in the ACC. Her 23 assists this season leads the nation and is also the top mark in Virginia history for a single season. Shell also has 10 career game-winning goals and 12 career game-winning assists. She is the first person in Cavalier history to record double-digit totals in these categories for a career. The Cavaliers, ranked second in the nation, host the 1998 ACC Field Hockey Championships this weekend, November 5-8, 1998. All five teams are ranked in the top 20. Duke will play Wake Forest on Thursday, Nov. 5 at 2:00. In the semifinals on Friday, North Carolina will play Maryland at 12:00 and Virginia will play the Duke/Wake winner at 2:30. FERGUSON NAMED ICECATS PRESIDENT AND GENERAL MANAGER
WORCESTER, MA – St. Louis Blues President and CEO, Mark Sauer, today named John S. Ferguson President and General Manager of the Worcester IceCats, the Blues' American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate. The announcement comes on the heels of the Blues' September 14th purchase of IceCats. In addition, Ferguson was assigned the position of Governor for the IceCats. Ferguson will perform the Worcester duties in conjunction with his current position of Vice President/Director of Hockey Operations for St. Louis.
Over the past four seasons, Ferguson has been a familiar presence in Worcester. His original assignment called for him to serve jointly as the Blues Assistant General Manager and the IceCats General Manager and Director of Hockey Operations. On February 26, 2001, the Blues elevated him to VP/ Director of Hockey Operations.
"Our organization is fortunate to have one of hockey's brightest young executives in John Ferguson," Sauer said. "The St. Louis Blues are committed to long-term player development via a strong franchise at the AHL level in Worcester. 'Fergie' has been, and will continue to be, critical to our continued success in Worcester, which in turn will benefit our young prospects and parent club in St. Louis."
Ferguson has been lauded by Blues Senior Vice President and General Manager Larry Pleau as being, "instrumental in the organization's success since joining the team in 1997." Under Ferguson's watch, the IceCats have blossomed, registering a 116-87-28-9 record (.561), while over 30 players have been promoted from Worcester to St. Louis. Last season, the IceCats finished the 80-game regular season slate with the best record in the League and were presented with the F.G. 'Teddy' Oke Trophy as New England Division Champions and the Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy as the AHL's Regular Season Points Champion.

Ice Hockey
Hockey was first brought to North America when British soldiers stationed in Nova Scotia, Canada, played the earliest games. By the 1870s, a group of college students at McGill University in Montreal were organizing games and had developed the first known set of hockey rules. In accordance with this new set of regulations, known as the "McGill rules," a puck was substituted for a rubber ball and the number of players on a team was set at nine. The National Hockey League was formed in 1910; there are currently 30 clubs competing in the National Hockey League.
