Astronomical Time Keeping
Introduction: Time keeping and construction of calendars are among the oldest branches of astronomy. Up until very recently, no earth-bound method of time keeping could match the accuracy of time determinations derived from observations of the sun and the planets. All the time units that appear natural to man are caused by astronomical phenomena: The year by Earth's orbit around the Sun and the resulting run of the seasons, the month by the Moon's movement around the Earth and the change of the Moon phases, the day by Earth's rotation and the succession of brightness and darkness.
If high precision is required, however, the definition of time units appears to be problematic. Firstly, ambiguities arise for instance in the exact definition of a rotation or revolution. Secondly, some of the basic astronomical processes turn out to be uneven and irregular. A problem known for thousands of years is the non-commensurability of year, month, and day. Neither can the year be precisely expressed as an integer number of months or days, nor does a month contain an integer number of days. To solves these problems, a multitude of time scales and calenders were devised of which the most important will be described below. Siderial Time The siderial time is deduced from the revolution of the Earth with respect to the distant stars and can therefore be determined from nightly observations of the starry sky. A siderial day can be defined in a first approximation as the time interval between two successive passages of the same star through the meridian. Here, the meridian of an observational site is the great circle passing through the two celestial poles and the zenith of the site. Expressed in different words, the meridian is the projection of the circle of the site's geographical longitude onto the celestial sphere if projected from the Earth's centre. The passage through the meridian is thus a more accurate determination of the point in time when in colloquial speech ``the star is due south'' (at least for observers on the northern hemisphere). The duration of a siderial day in units of Universal Time is 23h 56m 04.0905s.

    87. CNN - In Britain, Keeping Campaign Finances A Secret Is No Crime - Apr. 4, 1997
By Margaret Lowrie. CNN A story about bigtime contributors in Britain.

In Britain, keeping campaign finances a secret is no crime
    April 4, 1997
Web posted at: 9:25 p.m. EST (0225 GMT) From Correspondent Margaret Lowrie LONDON (CNN) British voters may never learn where the country's two largest political parties raise the 60 million pounds ($90 million) that they plan to spend during the current election campaign. But Britons know one thing for sure: Some of the largesse being tucked into Tory and Labor coffers will come from places far afield of the queen's dominions. This is because in Britain, there are no laws requiring disclosure of political contributions. And politicians not only accept donations from outside of the country, they actively pursue them. "The problem in Britain is exactly the same as the problem in the United States, namely, that the campaign finance laws are written by members of Parliament," according to Bill Emmott, editor of The Economist. "And it's then members of Parliament who are raising the finances for their campaigns."
    Conservatives court Asian money
Individual candidates for Parliament are limited to what they can spend on their campaigns, but there's no limit to party spending.

    KEEPING THE FAITH
    Sister Kathleen Crowley
Ordinary Time: Cycles in Marriage, Faith and Renewal
    Nancy Mairs
    Beacon Press
The ability to share one's life of faith with candor and insight is a risk undertaken by few. For such sharing can easily be interpreted wrongly and received with less respect than is its due. Yet, with piercing honesty and penetrating wisdom, Nancy Mairs has done this, placing her life and her belief before her readers in a series of personal essays which form her autobiography of faith, Ordinary Time . In this spiritual diary, she exhibits a depth of understanding of her newly-owned Catholic faith. At the beginning of her book, Mairs makes clear the urgency she feels to know why and how she has spent most of her conscious life "in an uneasy and unrelenting state of religious faith." The author relates her growing response to a "Something Else", the presence of God Herself. Mairs examines the immanence of "God working out Godself in everything." The title of her book identifies that time in the liturgical life of the Church which is outside the seasons of feast and fast outside of Advent and Christmas, Lent and Easter. Ordinary Time becomes for Mairs the time of religious presence, of God's close proximity to her in the people and events of her life. The transcendent God of mystery seems far from her experiences of God who is involved in every moment of her life. Mairs struggles with her "uneasy faith" in being, at one and the same time, Catholic and feminist something she laughingly refers to as an oxymoron. Yet, throughout her book, she attempts to weave together these two realities. Sometimes she accomplishes this with insight and integrity. At other times, she wrestles with the uncomfortable fit of both in her life. At this intersection of Catholicism and feminism, Mairs exhibits most visibly her ability to live with ambiguity and uncertainty. For she chooses to remain within this Church which she loves and wishes to change.

When we were growing up, we didn't have all of the high-tech games of today. We didn't have memory cards... we didn't have video game systems with built in DVD players or dishwashers. Nope. We just had the basic games. What's really funny is, as basic as these games were, they provided all of us with countless hours of entertainment. Whenever we happen to hear about one of these games or see them our reaction is always something like, "Oh man! I remember that game! I used to play it all the time! I was the king of that game!"

The nature of literacy and learning is rapidly changing as new technologies for information and communication such as the Internet appear, providing us with new challenges and new opportunities as we consider how best to prepare children for their futures. In fact, if there is one thing that is certain in these uncertain times, it is that the technologies of information and communication will regularly and repeatedly change, regularly redefining what it means to be literate ( Leu, in press ). This presents particular problems to those of us charged with preparing children for their future. How can we best prepare children for the new literacies that will be needed for the new technologies of information and communication that appear? Leu, in press

Practice playing along and keeping strict time with a metronome beat.
    http://www.ksedwards.ukgateway.net/riscos/drumming/index.htm
"Drumming" by Kevin Edwards © July 1997
    Purpose
To practice playing along and keeping strict time with a metronome beat.
The program only tests rhythmic accuracy, since it was written to test my percussion students playing on a midi drum pad. Any midi device could be used to play on.
Before you can run this you need to have Notes fonts installed, which should accompany this program distribution. Consult your computer manual if you are not sure how to install this.
    Using
There is a one bar count in before you should start to play. Listen for the high pitched tone as the first beat of the bar. If there are any tones before the first high pitched one then ignore these. The count in begins on the first high pitched tone. (N.B. you can't select midi beat even though the menu gives this option. The click has to be through the computer's speaker) When you have played the last note a number will appear on the screen to tell you how accurate your playing has been. This is the total number of 24ths of a crotchet beat that you were inaccurate to. Between and 30 is excellent. 30 to 60 is good. 60 to 100 is fair. Above 100 needs serious practice.
You are also told whether your playing is generally ahead of or behind the beat.

Celestial bodies, the sun, moon, planets, and stars have provided us a reference for measuring the passage of time throughout our existence. Ancient civilizations relied upon the apparent motion of these bodies through the sky to determine seasons, months, and years. Little is known about the details of timekeeping in prehistoric eras, however, records and artifacts that are discovered, show that in every culture, people were preoccupied with measuring and recording the passage of time. Ice-age hunters in Europe over 20,000 years ago scratched lines and gouged holes in sticks and bones, possibly counting the days between phases of the moon. Five thousand years ago, Sumerians in the Tigris-Euphrates valley in today's Iraq had a calendar that divided the year into 30-day months, divided the day into 12 periods (each corresponding to 2 of our hours), and divided these periods into 30 parts (each like 4 of our minutes). There are no written records of the creating of Stonehenge, built over 4000 years ago in England, but its alignments show its purposes apparently included the determination of seasonal or celestial events, such as lunar eclipses, solstices and so on.
