I t is the most important archaeological museum in Greece and one of the richest in the world concerning ancient Greek art. Its collections are representative of all the cultures that flourished in Greece.
T he construction of the museum was begun in 1866 and completed in 1889 with the gradual addition of the west wing in 1874, of the north in 1881, of the south in 1885 and finally, of the east wing. The building was erected in a large plot donated by Helen Tositsa, with the financial support of Demetrios and Nicolaos Vernardakis, the Archaeological Society and the Greek state.
T he building of the museum was originally designed by the architect Ludwig Lange but his plans were partially modified by Panages Kalkos and later, by Harmodios Vlachos and Ernst Ziller, who completely rearranged the facade and changed the plan of the east wing and the central hall. Two additions were made on the east side of the building; a new wing was constructed in the early 20th century based on the plans of Anastasios Metaxas and a two-storeyed building, designed by G. Nomikos, was erected in 1932-39. T he museum contains collections of : O ther important activities:

Welcome to AFRO-Americ@'s Black History Museum . Please take time to explore and enjoy our interactive exhibits.
Black Resistance... Slavery in the U.S.
The biggest myth about the Black American slaves was that they were all quiet, docile workers. Find out about the true firebrands, the spirits that refused to submit to any man or woman, who resisted until the last, and who fought and killed to be free. The Tuskegee Airmen All they wanted to do was fly and fight for freedom. What they wound up doing was changing American history. Get an inside look at the racial and political struggles that went on within and outside of the 99th as they became the first Black combat pilots in America. Jackie Robinson An interactive exhibit on the triumphs and times of this great player and his struggle to be the first African-American in the major leagues. The Black Panther Party Founded in 1966 by two young revolutionaries, the Black Panther Party was surely an experience this country will never forget. Though it would set up programs that fed Black neighborhoods, provided free healthcare and other positive programs for children, the Panthers were known to take a militant stance against the "White power structure." Here, a brief but informative story is told about this once so feared organization and a few of its key players. Black or White Too Black?

90. Stolen Art Or Finders Keepers
Dede TisoneBartels provides teacher's resources for considering the true ownership of works of art which have been taken from their place of origin to museums and collections around the world.

Stolen Property or Finders Keepers By Dede Tisone-Bartels " What a society deems important is enshrined in its art"
Broudy INTRODUCTION The ownership of many priceless artworks has become questionable because of how each was acquired. Some were gotten through outright theft, others were the spoils of war. Some were taken in the process of colonization, some as bounty and others by treasure hunters. You will become investigators and reporters. After your investigations you will present a case which will help determine the legal and ethical title of the rightful owners. Museums and the Spoils of War From a paper by Alan Riding
New York Times Sec. 4,
P. 3, Sunday March 12, 1995
Even before the Romans took their pick of Greek statues, art was treated as war booty. Throughout Europe's turbulent history, art works regularly changed hands through armed conflict or political domination. And from the 19th century, the Europeans began bringing Asian, African and Latin American treasures into their museums to save them, it was claimed, from destruction. Increasingly, however, "victim" countries are refusing to view history as a closed book. Greece has long demanded the return of the Elgin Marbles, the 253 sculptures from the Parthenon that are in the British Museum. Turkey, China, Cambodia, Nigeria, Mali and Bangladesh say their cultural heritage was ransacked. Mexicans lament that the feathered headdress of the Aztec Emperor Moctezuma is in a Vienna museum.
