The Academy at 875 Howard Street is Open!

Calendar of Events, Classes, and Lectures
The Academy at 875 Howard Street in downtown San Francisco is now open. From now until our Grand opening on June 19, Academy visitors can get a preview of our new exhibits and see the Steinhart Aquarium as it is completed. The Academy's 875 Howard Street facility will host a suite of new aquarium displays housing thousands of Steinhart Aquarium animals. Many fish will be housed in familiar jewel tanks, but others will move into larger homes. A 20,000-gallon, two-story coral reef tank will hold the aquarium's corals and tropical reef fish. The penguins will also get a larger tank, which will enable visitors to view the birds both on land and underwater. A series of circular tanks up to 20 feet in diameter will hold groups of animals that share the same type of habitat. These tanks will be equipped with acrylic panels that allow for top-to-bottom viewing. Special admission prices apply during the preview period from May 1 - June 19, 2004. Steinhart Aquarium
At 875 Howard Street, the aquarium will house thousands of live animals including penguins, fishes, snakes and frogs. The inside-out design will allow visitors to see the mechanisms that power the aquarium, sense the temperature and salinity of the tank water, feel the dirt in dry habitats and interact with aquatic biologists as they study and care for the animals.

    GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
The museum's primary goal is to provide a well-curated collection of specimens to be used for research and education by the communities to which it belongs: the University of Puget Sound, the Puget Sound region, and, in a broad sense, the world. Museums have an ever-increasing responsibility for the conservation of specimens as animal and plant populations are threatened by human activities, and the Slater Museum is one of the region's significant repositories for these specimens. Furthermore, museum collections serve as the primary sources of information about both spatial and temporal aspects of biodiversity anywhere in the world. To accomplish this, the museum will continue to enhance its collections, especially of regional animals and plants, and to search for orphaned collections to preserve. A secondary goal of the museum is to demonstrate and educate about the value of natural-history museums.
