HISTORY
At the 1990 Annual Meeting of the Special Libraries Association, seven attendees at the business meeting of the Biological Sciences Division first discussed forming a group of interested members to share concerns common to natural history libraries and their collections. At the following Annual Meeting in 1991, a group of 18 potential members decided to petition to become a caucus within SLA. The Association approved this request in November 1991, and by 1992 the membership of the newly created Natural History Caucus had more than doubled. Biofeedback , for Natural History Caucus news.
MISSION
Natural history broadly defined is the scientific study of the natural world on a macro level. It includes the specific disciplines of anthropology and archaeology, botany, zoology, paleontology, geology, meteorology, and astronomy. It is the mission of the Natural History Caucus to serve as a forum for the cooperative development of library collections, the delivery of information services, and the interpretation of natural science information resources. Current goals of the Caucus include:
  • conducting annual meetings of the Caucus at SLA conferences
  • encouraging new memberships of individuals or libraries
  • outreach to natural science information providers
  • promoting continuing education programs in natural history librarianship and in natural history subject areas

Rabbis, Flying Benjamin Horowitz of Australia writes: Is it permissible to go to the Mormon reading rooms in order to research my Jewish family roots? Dear Benjamin, A few introductory words about the issue. The Mormons have the largest collection of genealogical data that exists. It is stored in a structure that is built into a mountain in Salt Lake City, Utah, and contains information on over two billion people. This material is also made available via reading rooms located in cities around the world. The motivation for gathering this material is that if they have the name of the person, and the place and date of his death, they can baptize him via proxy. This means that they will have someone stand in for the deceased and go through a baptism in his name. The deceased is then given an opportunity to convert in Heaven (according to their belief.) Therefore, is it forbidden to approach the Mormons for the purpose of benefiting from something that is a vehicle for conversion to their faith?
