Introduction
Learners explore the changes in their community by researching events and photos for an "old fashioned" newspaper. Technology tools such as word processing, page layout, photo enhancing, and using clip art are learned while students design, write, and print their own accounts of what changes have occurred in their community.

  • Contact the local library about historical books and information. They are usually very good about lending materials to students. They might also know a local history buff that you can invite as a guest speaker.
  • Contact the local newspaper(s) and see if they will provide you with copies of past issues for your research.

Japanese Relocation During World War II Background President Franklin Delano Roosevelt declared that the day of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941, would live in infamy. The attack launched the United States fully into the two theaters of the world war. Prior to Pearl Harbor, the United States had been involved in the European war only by supplying England and other antifascist countries of Europe with the munitions of war.

The Zimmermann Telegram Background Between 1914 and the spring of 1917, the European nations engaged in a conflict that became known as World War I. While armies moved across the face of Europe, the United States remained neutral. In 1916 Woodrow Wilson was elected President for a second term, largely because of the slogan "He kept us out of war." Events in early 1917 would change that hope. In frustration over the effective British naval blockade, in February Germany broke its pledge to limit submarine warfare. In response to the breaking of the Sussex pledge, the United States severed diplomatic relations with Germany.

Lesson Plans Introduction History at the Cabildo Education Goals Because there is so much history to cover in the Cabildo, these lesson plans will concentrate on what the museum does best: teaching Louisiana history by using images and objects. How to Use These Lesson Plans These ten lesson plans are presented chronologically, each covering a different time period in Louisiana history. The lessons begin with a brief history of the time period or subject. This synopsis is adapted from the Cabildo exhibit. It is not inclusive, but presents a general overview of the subject. A time line for each lesson features the major events and movements of the time period. Scanned images of objects in the Cabildo from the time period are included. One object or image in each lesson plan is highlighted and students will be prompted to answer a series of questions about it. By examining this historical artifacta technique we call artifact reading Maps , where appropriate, illuminate the subject and stress the importance of geography in history.

Lesson Plan: The History of the Holocaust From A Personal Perspective
by George Cassutto North Hagerstown High School, Washington County, MD Grades 8-12 Subject: Social Science, History, Government, Language Arts. Overview: This lesson is intended to supplement any teacher's implementation of the standard Holocaust Education curriculum. It involves the integration of basic historical research, oral history, creative writing, and analysis of primary and secondary documentation. Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is to help students identify how the events of the Holocaust affected the lives of real people who lived in Europe during the period 1933 through 1945 and after. Based on the experiences of the parents of the teacher writing this lesson, the following activities are designed to help students relate experiences of individuals they will read about to basic facts and concepts on the Holocaust. They will conduct research into the events of the Holocaust and World War Two, and they will be led to relate those experiences to political and social trends taking place in today's society. The ultimate purpose of the lesson is to increase understanding between members of ethnic and religious groups, to enumerate the causes and consequences of racial prejudice, and to improve chances for students to practice acceptance and tolerance when encountering individuals who might differ from themselves. Objectives: Students will be able to: 1) Identify key events and concepts relating to the rise of fascism in Germany, the causes and course of World War Two, and the Holocaust.
