Lesson Overview
Teacher Material Student Lesson Primary Source Sets This lesson presents social history content and topics through the voices of ordinary people. It draws on primary sources from the American Memory Collection, American Life Histories, 1936-1940 Using excerpts from the collection, students study social history topics through interviews that recount the lives of ordinary Americans. Based on these excerpts and further research in the collections, students develop their own research questions. They then plan and conduct oral history interviews with members of their communities.

Activities to Celebrate Native American Heritage!
November is National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month. Education World offers 12 lessons to help students learn about Native American history and cultures. Included: Activities that involve students in dramatizing folktales, learning new words, preparing traditional foods, and much more! How did National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month get started? A brief time line illustrates some of the key events on the way to that designation:
  • At the turn of the 20th century, people began making proposals for a day to honor Native Americans.
  • In 1914, Red Fox James, a member of the Blackfoot tribe, rode horseback from state to state in the hope of gaining support for a day of tribute.

Students will understand the following: The United States conducts a census every 10 years. The percentage of African Americans in different parts of the United States changed in the course of the last century. There are economic, educational, and lifestyle reasons that African Americans moved from one part of the country to another. For this lesson, you will need: Access, in print or online, to U.S. population statistics from 1900 to the present Explain to students that they are going to track the population of African Americans in the South and in the North of the United States during the course of the 20th century. Ask students what resources they can use in this assignment. This question should lead to identifying for students books of statistical data in your school library, public library, or nearby university library as well as Web sites such as census Even casually reviewing the data, students should be able to tell you the frequency with which the U.S. population is counted. With that information they should be able to set up a chart for recording data from their sources.

I have been a public schools teacher for twelve years, and I am also a historian and have written several books on American and Native American history. I also just happen to be Quebeque French, Metis, Ojibwa, and Iroquois. Because my Indian ancestors were on both sides of the struggle between the Puritans and the New England Indians and I am well versed in my cultural heritage and history both as an Anishnabeg (Algokin) and Hodenosione (Iroquois), it was felt that I could bring a unique insight to the project.

    Lesson Plans
In the days immediately following the September 11, 2001 terrorism attacks, PBS pulled together resources to help educators teach students about peace, tolerance, war, patriotism, geography, and other related issues. Although time has passed, educators can continue to use these valuable resources to teach lessons on these important subjects. Afghanistan Today: Civil War and Human Rights
Your students (grades 9-12) may be hearing a lot in the news about Afghanistan and the Taliban. Help students understand the Taliban's position within Afghanistan, how the Taliban's practices have raised concerns about human rights, and the economic and cultural climate in Afghanistan today. Students may use this knowledge to postulate about what a war would mean for the Afghan people, short- and long-term. Afghanistan And Its Neighbors: Model Summit
As U.S. officials plan retaliation to the terrorist attacks on September 11, help students in grades 11-12 understand the complex relationships America has with countries in Central Asia and the Middle East. Students will research the recent political history of one country in the region and represent its interests at a model international summit designed to debate response to the terrorist attacks on America and propose measures to achieve long-term stability in that part of the world. A World At Peace
Designed for younger students (grades 2-6), this lesson plan invites students to brainstorm the basic rights of people everywhere, explore the United Nation's Declaration of Human Rights, and then use international photography galleries as part of a multimedia creative writing assignment imagining a world at peace.
