Writings Letters of Zachary Taylor
Died : July 9, 1850, Washington, D.C. Buried : Zachary Taylor National Cemetery, near Louisville, KY Consulting Editor Michael F. Holt, University of Virginia Biography: A Life in Brief At the time he became President, Zachary Taylor was the most popular man in America, a hero of the Mexican-American War. He was probably not the right man, however, for the job at a time when Americans were confronting the explosive issue of slavery. Taylor was a wealthy slave owner who held properties in the plantation states of Louisiana, Kentucky, and Mississippi. During his brief time in office (he died only sixteen months after his election), his presidency foundered over the question of whether the national government should permit the spread of slavery to the present-day states of California, New Mexico, and Utah, then newly won from Mexico. His sudden death put Vice President Millard Fillmore into the White House, and Fillmore promptly threw his support behind the Compromise of 1850, canceling out much of the impact of Taylor's presidency.

Lesson Plans and Resources for Social Studies Teachers

Dr. Marty Levine, Professor Emeritus of Secondary Education, California State University, Northridge (CSUN),has gathered lesson plans and resources from the Internet which social studies teachers should find very useful. The site is detailed, well organized, and well maintained. PBS Teacher Source
PBS has a great source for information on a myriad of historical events and personalities. PBS's assorted and diverse web exhibits supplement specific individual television series and generally include a resume of each episode, interviews (often with sound bites), a timeline , a glossary, photos, and links to relevant sites. Categories include American History, World History, History on Television, and Biographies. Go to the PBS Teacher Source for lessons and activities arranged by topic and sign up for their newsletter.

The people I meet with in the field are quick to tell me to forget everything they taught me at the University about how to teach. And, they are right, except for one thing: YOU CAN NEVER HAVE TOO MANY LESSON PLANS. Most of what is here is in plan text, there may be some difficulty with formatting since virtually all the files are ASCII text translations of Microsoft Word 2.2 for Windows documents. In the near future, as time allows, I would like to add some pictures from videotapings of my classes, as well as pictures of some of the nicer Native American projects some of the students made (see below). Also, I know this sounds more like a personal portfolio than a History lesson plan database. If you are an ISU student, I urge you to contact me if you are interested in contributing your lesson plans to this project. Please E-mail me if you would like to do this.

Need some help with your American History lessons? Take a peek at my lesson plans and ideas.
My first year teaching I was dying to see other teachers' plan books, but most of them were either blank or didn't seem suitable for our students ("high-risk" with poor reading skills). After teaching American history to 8th graders for a few years, I've developed this webpage in the hopes that it can help first year teachers get an idea of what to do, or help out some experienced teachers freshen up some lessons. Just to let you know, my "at-risk" students have the same passing rate on the history portion of the state standardized exam as the "advanced" students.
TABLE OF CONTENTS CLASS PROCEDURE BOARD SET-UP USING YOUR TEXTBOOK ADDITIONAL TEACHING RESOURCES ... RECONSTRUCTION: WEEKS 33-34
CLASS PROCEDURE
Here's the procedure for every day starting week 2:
  • Students come in, grab their notebook, and answer the warm-up question on the top left side of the back of the next page. As soon as the bell rings, they have 5 minutes. If they finish, they raise their hand, and I stamp it. (When I grade their notebooks, 3 stamps amount to 1 point of extra credit.) Students then write in the objective and homework in their agenda notebook. These notebooks are signed every weekend by a parent/guardian.

Died : July 31, 1875, Carter's Station, Tennessee Buried : Greeneville, Tennessee Consulting Editor Hans Trefousse, Brooklyn College, Emeritus Biography: A Life in Brief Andrew Johnson gives truth to the saying that in America, anyone can grow up to become President. Born in a log cabin in North Carolina to nearly illiterate parents, Andrew Johnson did not master the basics of reading, grammar, or math until he met his wife at the age of seventeen. The only other man to attain the office of President with so little formal education was Abraham Lincoln. Whereas Lincoln is esteemed as America's greatest President, Johnson, his successor, is ranked as one of the worst. After Andrew's father died, his mother and her new husband apprenticed fourteen-year-old Andrew and his older brother William to a local tailor. After serving a number of years in this trade, the boys ran away for several years, dodging rewards for their capture placed by their former employer. Andrew later returned to his mother, and the entire family moved west to Greeneville, Tennessee, where young Andrew set up shop as a tailor and met his wife, Eliza McCardle. Eliza educated Andrew and helped him make wise investments in town real estate and farmlands. When Johnson reached the White House, First Lady Eliza Johnson was a semi-invalid suffering from tuberculosis during her husband's term in office. She only made two public appearances during her entire stay in the executive mansion. Nevertheless, she operated behind the scenes with energy and tact and was fondly remembered by the White House staff.

After his father died when George was eleven, George's mother Mary, a tough and driven woman, struggled to hold their home together with the help of her two sons from a previous marriage. Although he never received more than an elementary school education, young George displayed a gift for mathematics. This knack for numbers combined with his quiet confidence and ambition caught the attention of Lord Fairfax, head of one of the most powerful families in Virginia. While working for Lord Fairfax as a surveyor at the age of sixteen, the young Washington traveled deep into the American wilderness for weeks at a time.
